View Full Version : Firefox 3..June 17th
I was wondering when it was going to come out, and saw this (http://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/index.php/2008/06/11/coming-tuesday-june-17th-firefox-3/) on the mozilla main page. I really don't know what the changes are, but a newer version is almost always better :)

I have that date marked on my calendar, actually. I have Lifehacker.com on my google reader RSS feed, it's pretty good for alerting you to things like that.
Firefox 3 is going to be great, me thinks. They've fixed over 300 memory leaks, made it more secure, faster, and just a lot of new, nifty features.

I thought about doing that, but I'm just not comfortable with using a product that has a "beta" label on it, even if it is the same thing :)

How much money would it cost me to change your mind? :D
How much money would it cost me to change your mind? :D
The first question should be, "do you want to change my mind?"
If the answer is yes, then I'll change my mind with whatever money you have in your pocket right now. :D

Yeah but I'd rather help Mozilla get in the record books and wait until Tuesday ;) Though the Spore CC will absorb any time spent playing with the browser.

Well, I think Firefox 3 just went live.
However, the millions of people trying to download it are causing the page not to load for me.

:( I guess they forgot to increase server capacity. I wants it too.
*edit* It got normal for a moment and I was able to download it. For some reason the file says 2.0 but yet it seems ot be Firefox 3..makes no sense.
*edit2* I 'installed' it. Nope, it's still Firefox 2 up. I guess Mozilla must not be wanting that world record very much.

I've toyed with it but I've been content with FF2 until FF3 went fully official and my extensions all still functioned fine. Not so much miffed, just strange that Mozilla's servers weren't prepared for the onslaught :p

Firefox 3's updates don't take many big leaps. It does feel a little faster, and the "Locations" system has some merits, but if you took it away and gave me back Firefox 2, little would change in my browsing habits.
I look forward to the day when I feel the same kind of browser evolution as when I first switched from Internet Explorer 6 to Firefox 1.

That's supposed to stop me from downloading it?
*edit* It's updated finally to be final 3.0 download once it does start the download (control + F5 if it still says 2.0)

Yes.
No. It is just silly to be F5ing the site when its getting slammed if you already have RC2. I understand why users who haven't tried the RC builds would be vying for it, but if you already have FF3 in all by name only, you're okay to go about your business until tomorrow, when you can download it in two minutes easy.

I haven't been F5'ing the site over and over. On the MozillaZine forums it said 3.0 was actually up finally, so I F5'd the site and said 2.0 still. So I ctrl+F5'd it to force a reload of all and it said 3.0 instead of the cache still thinking 2.0

Bet you it does. 3.0.1 will fix it though!!
I wonder if there's going to be any major changes to Camino. I <3 it.
Renwood
06-17-2008, 03:05 PM
Camino always feels like a strange middle-ground between Firefox and Safari to me, but without the major benefits of either.
I really wish I could marry Safari's aesthetics wholesale with the four extensions I really use in FF. What a happy day.
Really? I honestly only use it because it's the fastest-rendering of any Mac browser and Keychain Access rocks. Feature-wise, I don't really feel there's anything missing.

It is faster than Firefox, but the last Safari update put it even with Camino from my subjective testing. But really, I just love the way Safari looks. Camino sticks out. Firefox 3 made a lot of strides, but its still not quite as slick as Safari.
The only thing from Safari that I like is Web Clipping, honestly. And Camino is nice and customizable. I like having a total browser toolbar space of less than 50 pixels height. More room for viewing. :D

I noticed the location dropdown change a bit back but forgot about it. I'm used to going to all my sites via location bar dropdown. FF3 somehow janked that all up so it's nowhere near what it used to be (not the look, but how the links were ordered).
So I'm having to drag out the bookmarks toolbar and put every site I go to regularly >.> I'll adjust to the new method to how I went to sites but eh, a small price to pay.
Renwood

Location bar works better when you use keywords rather than the url.
Jonbo298
06-17-2008, 03:46 PM
I can see it being useful if I need to relook something up and don't feel like dragging through the history. For now though, I don't need to. I'm content with my half assed method now.

Once you install it, a little screen-wire looking thing will appear in the upper right hand corner, to the right of your search bar. Click it. In the upper right hand corner is a search option, you can search photobucket, flickr, amazon, google, etc. It also works on websites with thumbnails I think....but the fact that you can type "boobs" into it and scroll through thousands of...boobs....is pretty sweet in my book. :p

Hmm.. Netiher have I.
I used to have some slight slowdowns before, I don't even have those anymore.
And I love the new search bar. Reminded me of the days when I'd just type an AOL keyword to open a site back in the early '90s.. :)

Has anyone had trouble getting gamefaqs to load since switching over to Firefox 3?
I use Firefox 2 at work (too many plugins and extensions critical to what I do), and the site loads fine.
I'm using Firefox 3 at home, and it can't seem to connect, it acts like the server is down or something. I'm getting that message randomly on other websites too. The ads in the background of Gamespot do the same thing.
I thought it might be a problem with SSL2 being turned off by default, but I went into the about:config and enabled it, and still no dice.

I should try to see if I can run it at work again. The old system was very restrictive on logging whatever I did and blocking me.
although perhaps I shouldn't. being made to use IE6 at least somewhat tempers my urge to play on the internet all day

ps to anyone on a mac
While the default Firefox 3 skin is leagues better than Firefox 2, its still doesn't quite fit the look of OS X. The look is just a little off. Luckily, the latest version of GrApple (Yummy Variant) makes FF3 looks near exactly like Safari. The only thing still missing is the nifty way that the 'find' function displays within Safari, but such is the sacrifice to be made.
Its been enough to make me switch to Firefox 3 as my default browser in OS X.

What kind of trouble? It loads perfectly fine for me..
I'm having trouble with Google. It doesn't keep me logged in, so every time I start Firefox after a reboot, it asks me for my username and password..

Hmm, maybe it's my router doing something weird.
That is an odd problem you're having, though. Mine isn't doing that. It sounds like it may not be saving the cookie correctly.

I installed Digsby, and configured it to check my Gmail account. It started to happen after that, so I thought it may be the cause and removed the Gmail account from Digsby. Haven't rebooted yet though :)
Edit: Nope, Digsby wasn't the problem. I still had to log in again.. Another weird thing, after installing Digsby, and adding my Facebook account to see updates and for Facebook chat, I found that I had to log in every time I tried to open Facebook on my iPod Touch, but not on Firefox..

Try starting a new user profile. Google Firefox change user profile for instructions.
This has happened to me before, and this solution always works.
