When GameCube debuted last year it was supported by several key titles unique to the system. Sega delivered up Super Monkey Ball, an addictive action-puzzler that featured impressive multiplayer party games. It went on to be a sleeper hit and sold above Sega's expectations, and rightly so as it's one of IGNcube's favorite titles. Thanks to this success, Sega will bring the sequel Super Monkey Ball 2 to GameCube in Fall 2002. Featuring more of all that monkey-loving goodness, the Amusement Vision developed game should go on to become the ultimate party game to own this season.

Features
• Main puzzle game now includes more than 150 mind-bending stages

• All-new Story Mode pulls players into 10 massive monkey-themed worlds, all unique in their own way

• Six brand-new Party games including Monkey Boat Race, Monkey Shot, Monkey Dog Fight, Monkey Tennis, Monkey Baseball, and Monkey Soccer!

• Improved versions of the original party games Monkey Race, Monkey Fight, Monkey Target, Monkey Golf, Monkey Billiards, Monkey Golf, and Monkey Bowling

• Compete with friends in four-player matches of any of the party games

• Releases Fall 2002

Gameplay
Super Monkey Ball is based on a simple scheme. Using the control stick you tilt the worlds and roll the monkey of your choice in his plastic ball prison. The object is to make it from one end of the stage to the goal line at the other, without dying. It's very much like the classic puzzle game Labyrinth and in the videogame world Marble Madness. The franchise's beginnings started in the arcade. However, it wasn't long after GameCube was announced that Sega decided to bring the title out for the system's Japanese launch with some more "home console" type additions. Developer Amusement Vision knew that GameCube's four controller ports could be very advantageous in making Super Monkey Ball much more than a single-player puzzle experience.

It wasn't long before several addictive monkey-themed party games were forged. Racing, fighting, billiards, golf, bowling, and a unique bull's-eye based mini-game were all created exclusive for the GameCube release. Amusement Vision hit the nail right on the head by implementing these important multiplayer games. Some argue they are just as important as the main puzzle action, and we certainly agree. Fortunately for fans of the series Sega is taking an if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it attitude with the creation of Super Monkey Ball 2, which will see a release a mere year after the debut of the first.

The upgraded Super Monkey Ball 2 will come equipped with a brand-new Story mode, 150 levels to challenge the most hardcore Monkey Ball addicts, and, most importantly, a slew of new party games including Monkey Boat Race, Monkey Shot, Monkey Dog Fight, Monkey Tennis, Monkey Baseball, and Monkey Soccer. Add those to the existing party games from the original and you've got a formula for an incredibly rockin' party game, and we won't even mention the added value for more creative drinking games. It sure sounds like the team is getting creative, and given that the distinctive Monkey Target was one of the best additions to the original, we can't wait to see what Monkey Shot is! Sounds a bit like we'll be catapulting those innocent monkeys through the air in an effort to hit more targets. Furthermore, given that all the previous party games were highly polished and incredibly fun to play for their own reasons, we've no doubt that Dog Fighting, Baseball, Soccer, and especially Tennis will be added to Monkey Ball fans' favorite list.

It is expected that Amusement Vision will further broaden the options for character selection. Originally a family of three -- Aiai, Meemee, and Gongon -- it's very likely we'll see other family members or even other families to use.

Graphics
The first screenshots of Super Monkey Ball 2 show off even sharper visuals than the original. Not a drastic improvement, but a lot more artistic creativity and effects. One screenshot shows off Aiai on modeled cage flooring, heading into what appears to be a shimmering sea of water flowing in from a shark's mouth. If the water reacts to the tilts of the controller or even the shark's movements it should be a beautiful thing.

The artists have always done a splendid job in creating unique environments, and we expect nothing but top-notch work moving forward. Super Monkey Ball is also renowned for it's dazzling 60 frames per second framerate, a fantastic accomplishment for a first-generation title. Once again, we are very confident that they will return with these visual features. All we would kindly beg for is progressive scan support and a 16:9 mode.

Outlook
Super Monkey Ball 2 should be the party game to own come this fall. Even if Nintendo manages to pull out a Mario Party in time for release later this year, Sega's new monkey-theme franchise has a lot going for it. It's a two-pronged attack, as well. Thanks to Super Monkey Ball's addictive puzzle setup, it should be a really high-profile game for fans of that type of gaming with its stunning 150 levels.

Well you know for some reason, I thought the title "Super Monkey Ball 2" might have given it away even if you didn't read it, but I guess my logic is flawed.
