View Full Version : Post your sunglasses! (56k need not apply)
I know what you're thinking. "What the fuck, Dyne." But I happen to be one of THOSE people who likes to pay more than $20 for a pair of sunglasses even though I'm not rich at all. It all started when I first got hired at Propaganda - I was really into Miami Vice at the time, and I wanted a pair of Sonny's sunglasses. I eventually went to Sunglass Hut and payed the outrageous price of $150 for a pair of Ray-Bans. But you know what? Staring at a screen all day IS very straining, and the sun really does get to you. I wasn't as nerdy as I thought I was after I started the job.
Anyways, my first pair, a pair of Ray-Ban "New Wayfarers", model 2132, with dark tortoise shell and grey-green lenses.
http://www.gametavern.net/dyne/sunglasses/2132wayfarers.jpg
Anyways, a year as passed, and Turok finally came out. I had also been doing a lot of random researching on Ray-Bans and I found a hell of a deal on these 2001 reissues, combined with Canadian Buying Power™ and the power of ebay. They had all the features my other pair didn't have, such as flex-arms, polarized, red-tinged lenses that are great for driving, and a bigger design. I just had to have them for the price they were selling them (at least $150 less than Sunglass Hut):
http://www.gametavern.net/dyne/sunglasses/RB2113_909_47_54MM_PIC3.jpg
So, I was happy with those two, and I bought them, but I was also looking at what Ray-Ban released last winter, for only a few bucks more, which was totally hot. Folding Ray-bans. Raybans that fit in your pocket. In a moment of decreased masculinity, I HAD to have them. I finally caved in two weeks ago. This time for a black pair with grey lenses, and polarized again. Check out this:

http://www.gametavern.net/dyne/sunglasses/47ce_3.JPG
So those got held up in Canadian Customs on Tuesday and I still haven't seen them yet. What the hell. I guess they'll be delivered on Monday.
Anyways, yeah, those are my sunglasses. I started the official Ray-Ban Wayfarer group on Facebook (nerdy, I know) and I have over 600 members now. And the crazy thing is, I'm really warming up to Persol sunglasses, which are like the hotter, older Italian exchange student living in Ray-Ban's house. I don't think I'll be buying any, any time soon, anyways. But just look at these two Persols:

Yeah, that's hot. Daniel Craig wore the first pair in Casino Royale, in the second half of the movie.
Anyways, post yours!

A Slazenger something. I've had it for at least 5 years now.
If you think I need replacement, don't hesitate to tell me.
BTW: does 56k still exist?
Stupid lack of photo capability at the moment
On the Easter long weekend I bought a pair of sunglasses just so I could do Bono impressions with them.

Actually my brother got a pair of purple ray bans as a bonus (he worked at Sunglasss Hut for a time) and gave them to me...
Personally I frown upon anybody who actually goes into sunglass hut and drops $200+ on a pair of friggin sunglasses... Frown frown frown...
Granted only those super duper polarized extreme name brand super-hot brands cost that much... I... I think...
Note: The sunglasses featured in Dyne's post all look like about 30 different pairs my family has lying around the house that were purchased at drugstores in the 80s...
Yeah, apparently Wayfarers are the most copied sunglasses style in the world, but I don't know if I buy that, based on how many Ray-Ban aviator impersonations there are.
What model are the purple Ray-Bans?
And yeah, I even felt a little odd buying sunglasses for $150, but I'm definitely glad about the prices on ebay. The only thing you have to worry about is authenticity, and most places have a full refund policy on it anyways.
I have been contemplating about ordering the Persol 2720-S for a few days now for the summer. They are quite nice looking.

I don't own any sunglasses, though I could post my prescription glasses....They are pretty rad.

You totally should. They'd be my number one Persol pick. However, the 2759's, the other ones I posted, are really nice too. Most of the 27- line is pretty similar, with little differences, if you're interested in the general shape. However the 2720's are the most common, just because they were in Casino Royale.

Some $8 Purple tinted things I got from the Pier.
Never was too fond of the way sunglasses looked on my face, so haven't really invested too hard in that accessory type. I mean, does this even look right?

Dyne (or anyone else), do you have any sunglasses tips for me?
Blue might be a bit too blue for me, and I'm not sure about the shape.
And yeah Ace, those look really good. :) Oh and DsH's too.
Yeah, those look good on you, but if you're looking to upgrade, I'd recommend something with larger frames, and larger arms. Something like a Ray-Ban Predator (attached).
Also, you don't really see blue lenses anymore unless on something like Oakley's; I don't know why.

My tip on sunglasses, is fuck the price.
Don't get brand name.
Sunglasses are sunglasses.
I spent 170 on mine.
I re-thought that purchase, yet still have them.
Save yourself the money.

so...these are the first sunglasses i had gotten
http://www.gametavern.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2867&d=1207541052
which cost about $200...i loved them...then they got lost :baby:
So i got me these ones...which weren't any cheaper...
http://www.gametavern.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2868&d=1207541064
except mine are black...i just didn't have any pictures...
then just this past November i got my girl these:
http://www.eyeglasses123.com/images/COLOR_B/GG_2965S.jpg
for those of you who FROWN upon expensive sunglasses, i'm not naming anybody in particular...i frown upon you! you do not cherish your eyes enough :p
props to all of you who have nice sunglasses. :)
My polarized folding Ray-Bans are here! Finally. They are so flipping sexy.
I can't believe they fold into something smaller than my wallet but that's hard to believe now amirite! :sneaky:
Seriously though, I totally recommend these. I got them off ebay for $99.
So I've been absolutely torn on buying Persol sunglasses, but I thought I'd treat myself for finishing off strongly this semester. However, I've searched and phoned everywhere, and apparently Persol sunglasses are discontinued up here. What the fuck.
I've been searching for deals on eBay though, and I homed in on this pair, which I posted in the first post of this thread:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:IT&item=190200642371&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI
However, I came to the conclusion last night that I'd prefer to have another pair with brown lenses. With a bit of searching, I found this pair, finally:
http://cgi.ebay.com/PERSOL-2720-SUNGLASSES-2720S-BOND-GLASSES-POLARIZED-x60_W0QQitemZ120191954637QQihZ002QQcategoryZ15666QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp163 8Q2em118Q2el1247

http://vachik-com.nt30.hostek.com/Pictures/Persol/2720/PO_2720_2447_2.JPG
So for $20 more, I found a polarized version that, overall, looks way more sexy. And guess what? Shipping is $5 less than what the first pair was, and it's 1-2 day UPS express shipping rather than $30 for shitty 3-5 day US postal service mailing. I think I lucked out here.

I bought these like 6 years ago, I don't wear them too often because I think the blue looks kind of gimmicky, but they're fun to use when I go down south, and also because of the grip on the side, they stay on very firmly letting me use them when skiing instead of goggles.http://www.ferrit.co.nz/WebRoot/ExtImages/Shop0110/13/20/03/3b/a2626055_l.jpg

I don't believe one bit of that article.
I didn't read the article, but I live by the fact that sun is healthy for 20-30 minutes, and everything after that is probably negligible. I know for a fact you need at least 20 minutes in the sun to get your serotonin flowing (which, in the winter, really affects some people when they don't get any.)
Of course they're going to test the people who ONLY wear sunglasses/glasses twenty-four-slash-seven against the people who have never worn glasses in their life.

Yeah, it was more of an "I believe you should do this because I think nature is healthy" article. He may have a point, but they need to do research.
I personally love the feeling of sun on my face. I often close my eyes and try to walk as far as I dare without opening them.
So I'm a crazy son a bitch who decided to end his sunglasses shopping spree with a pair of old Persol's off this german vintage sunglasses site that was having a 50% off sale on Persols. I really couldn't refuse. It was between the Persols that Arnold wore in Terminator 2, and a toned-down version of the classic Persol 649's, which are way too round.
Persol 624:
http://www.gametavern.net/dyne/persol624front.jpg
Plus it has all the cool features of the 649's - victor flex on the bridge, which means the front part of the glasses bend just like the meflecto arms do. The entire glasses mold to your face. Not to mention, the badassery of the pure mineral lenses. Awwww yeah.
So yeah, that's it for glasses for me for a long time.
When the children ask Daddy Dyne why they have to pay for their own tuition, he will tell them, "Spent it on the glasses, the glasses."

Actually, I'd want Italians making my glasses. Even if I ruined my life right now and ran away with an Italian girl, my children would only be half Italian. So it's definitely adoption for me and Becky.
Actually, disregard this thread. I just got my Persol 2720's yesterday and they are the most fucking comfy thing I've ever put on my face. I don't think I'll ever wear anything else!

Ok, I got a new pair. I chose them based on Dyne's advice and personal taste. How do they look? They were cheap, so be honest if they don't look that good!
Nice! Those fit your face a lot better and frame your jaw. They look a little like goggles from the side, but there's nothing wrong with that. Especially if you're going for the steampunk look.
Dyne, what did you pay for those Persol 2720s?
I've been shopping around and have found a wide range of prices, $140-250.
I got my pair polarized for $160 on eBay. Need some help?

Actually, I may indeed need some help.
I went to the store the other day and decided on the gunmetal Persol 2244-S. Know where I can find the best price?
Gunmetal frame? Ok. Polarized or no? What coloured lens? Or are you just looking for the cheapest?
Well, do I really need polarized? I'm basically buying these because I need them for my 30 minute drive to work that often faces directly into the sun.
I'm not sure on the lens color.
Alright. The colours are essentially dark green or dark brown. I would recommend dark brown for driving. I'll look for prices right now.
The cheapest I can find, cheaper than eBay, is $123. :) Polarized goes for around $150-$160. They don't have gunmetal + black in anything but polarized, but I say these are pretty good choices.

I'd have to see them in close-up. I really don't think those gold ones looked bad on you, but hey, it's your preference that matters. :D
I got my glasses customized. The arms were too long, the glasses slided down my nose. So they changed the arms (I think they melted them). But they're still not perfect, when I don't keep my head up, or when I'm sweaty, they slide down. Then the sun shines over the glasses, into my eyes.
Also, they rest on a spot of my nose that's not very comfortable. Not on the bone, but on the cartilage.
(Sorry if that was not very pretty English. Technical talks like that are always a bit hard in a second language.)

The shape was perfect, I agree. But I just couldn't see myself wearing gold, I just don't like the way it seems to show itself off. I like being subtle :)
This new one's a bit more tear-drop shaped, and doesn't look as good on my face as the other one (just a bit, imo) but the way it looks on me, as a package, is much better.

So I went back to the store because my sunglasses slided down my nose. He bended the end of the arms a bit. I think he used a hair dryer or something similar to soften the arms a bit.
That wasn't enough so I came back a few weeks later to ask for the same thing. Then he bended them a bit too far... and one of the arms a bit outward. :( You can see it in the attached picture. The right arm sometimes doesn't even hook behind my ear!
Now I'm trying to bend them in a better shape again. Does anyone have any tips? I tried holding the arms in hot water, to soften the material a bit. (I considered holding them close to a candle, but it's probably too hot.)
Also, a friend bended the nose bridge a bit and I'm not too happy with that. It's not symmetric anymore. Can I safely bend it back?
That sucks. :( That's the main reason I stick with acetate-plastic sunglasses.
I would go back to the guy and see if you can get an exchange or something. I don't know if real Ray-Bans are supposed to bend like that because I've never owned metal ones worth more than $40.
Angrist
10-18-2008, 02:23 PM
Hm the salesman told/showed me that the arms are flexible and you can bend them... So I guess I'll just bend them in shape after I've heated them up a bit.
I tried googling. I thought that maybe there was an optimal bending temperature or something. :p No luck of course.
Angrist

Ok, I bended the arms of my Ray-Ban into shape.
I stuck them in boiled water to heat and soften the metal a bit. That seemed to work pretty well. :)
