So they're removing all memories of it.. I guess it's a step in the right direction?

Excuse my ignorance, but sixaxis was the motion sensitivity ability of the PS3 controller, correct?

It was the controller that replaced the dual shock 2. Sony gave a bunch of retarted excuses for not having rumble, such as describing it as a "last-gen technology" and even so far as stating that rumble wouldn't work with motion controls.

So they've put their foot in their mouth and will be releasing the dual shock 3 very soon, which is basically the sixaxis with rumble.

Well, Phil Harrison DID man up and say something like "what did you expect us to say? we were in the middle of a lawsuit and obviously could not have the rumble tech ready for the PS3 launch". It's PR...it's not honorable to say "we really dropped the ball on this one...i would stay away from our product". That's just stupid business.

So if the duelschok 3 is sixaxis with rumble, they're not discontinuing sixaxis, they're improving it.

But its not called sixaxis, so in a sense they are discontiuing it, just in name only

Yeah but to say that they're "discontinuing" and "removing all memories of it" sounds a bit cynical...

But like Stu said, it's a big PR thing... Did you expect them to delay the whole console because of a lack of rumble in it's controllers, without any solid knowledge of when that issue would be resolved?
And if it somehow was just a willing decision on their part, and not due to the lawsuit... Well...

Does anybody remember this little analog-stickless guy?

Which was replaced in August '97 by this little rumbleless guy?

Which was replaced less than a year later, in May '98, by the original Dualshock...

If there's any PS3 owners on here that plan on getting a Dualshock 3, I don't recommend trading your SIXAXIS controller into Gamestop because they will only give you $10 credit which IMO is pretty bad even for them. Ebay that thing and get a few extra dollars to pay for that new Dualshock 3. :D

They should have just stuck with the Banana controller.

They should have just stuck with the Banana controller.

Pretty much, and put an IR port on the front so people can use remotes of their own on the PS3.

DsH's post made me think. For a controller with 2 'tacked on' functions (sticks and rumble), the Dual Shock 1 and 2 (and now 3) did really well. You'd expect the sticks to be in an odd place, because they ran out of space or something, but they're not.

If you look at it that way, the Dual Shock 3 is just an original PSX controller + 3 functions that Nintendo introduced + analog buttons.
