Sony’s San Diego Studio has spent the past two years developing its first internally developed PlayStation 2 game, the action/adventure title, The Mark of Kri. Originally conceived as a PlayStation game, the team decided to shift development to PS2 and expand the scope of the game. The end result is a unique contrast of visuals. Kri has the look and feel of a 3D version of a Disney animated feature (think Tarzan) but the Mature-rated gameplay of a bloody combat game (think Conan meets Mortal Kombat).

“We started developing this game around combat,” explained Jonathon Beard, director of the San Diego Studio. “We went in thinking Conan the Barbarian action/adventure, but with the depth of a role-playing game.”

Players assume the role of Rau, a 300 pound warrior who’s a man of few words (actually, he doesn’t speak a word in the game). The story revolves around an ancient, dark spell that has been split into six pieces and spread throughout the world in an effort to keep the evil from returning. A millennium later, an evil minion called The Dark One has discovered the spell and is seeking out the six families that hold the secrets. It’s up to Rau to traverse the lands and stop the evil spell from being cast. The game’s story is told through hand-drawn animated sketches, which are drawn on screen as a narrator speaks. The last picture is frozen and transformed to color, which is where you begin the game in full 3D. The inn serves as your hub between missions, as the innkeeper will give you missions, and you can partake in training here as well. The game spans six worlds and 10 locations, which vary from snowy mountains to lush forests.

Although the unique combat system is truly intuitive, you’ll want to give it a go in training first to get the hang of it. Sony has patented the attack system, which allows you to fight up to nine enemies on-screen at once using an axe, sword or other weaponry. A quick button push allows you to assign three enemies to three buttons for quick kills as they come at you from all directions. Once you’ve killed an enemy, you can reassign that key to another on the fly.
