Woohoooooo!! It's finally done! I finished the concept version of my thesis. The last parts sure took a lot more time than expected! But at least I really like it. Of course, there are still some small things I could improve, and maybe I need to change some bigger things as well, but not within a week.

English: Because global warming is gaining increasing attention, more people are buying carbon offsets to make their air travel climate neutral. One popular way to mitigate CO2 emissions is to plant trees which sequester carbon when they grow. This thesis does not discuss whether or not global warming is really caused by humans, but instead focuses on the effect of international policies on the market. The market of carbon offset is growing rapidly, but little is known about how it works or what the relation is with forestry.
A literature study and case study of company websites were used to gather data. The theoretical framework chapter discusses global warming and carbon sequestration and their relation with forestry and air travel. The results chapter offers a general overview of the market and an in-depth analysis of one chain, ranging from the forest manager to the customer. The most notable result is that carbon offsets are mostly sold on an individual basis. Therefore, the discussion chapter suggests new coalitions between airlines and forest owners. These coalitions will provide cheaper offsets and better service for the customer and will encourage more customers to offset their air travel.
Dutch: Omdat klimaatsverandering meer aandacht krijgt, kopen meer mensen CO2 compensaties om hun vliegreizen klimaatneutraal te maken. Een populaire manier is het planten van bomen die bij het groeien koolstof vastleggen. Deze scriptie discussieert niet of klimaatsverandering wel of niet door mensen wordt veroorzaakt, maar richt zich op de uitwerking van internationaal beleid op de markt. De markt van CO2 compensatie groeit snel, maar over de werking en relatie met bosbeheer is maar weinig bekend.
Een literatuurstudie en een case study van bedrijfswebsites zijn gebruikt om data te vergaren. Het theoretische kader bespreekt klimaatsverandering en koolstofvastlegging en de relaties met bosbeheer en vliegreizen. Het resultatenhoofdstuk biedt een algemeen overzicht van de market en een diepere analyse van een keten, van de bosbeheerder tot de klant. Het is erg opmerkelijk dat CO2 compensaties vooral op een individuele basis verkocht worden. Daarom suggereert het discussiehoofdstuk nieuwe coalities tussen vliegtuig maatschappijen en bosbezitters. Deze coalities zullen voor goedkopere compensaties en betere service voor de klant zorgen en zullen meer mensen aanmoedigen hun vliegreis te compenseren.
