1) You can get arrested. Trust me, there is a lot to lose.
2) It muddies the synapses in your brain, causing a proven loss of memory and intelligence. When I smoked I had a GPA of 3.01. Once I quit my GPA went to a 3.98 in grad school and I didn't work half as hard for it.
3) It causes you to like really horrible music, like the Grateful Dead and Phish, and eat Funyuns (they just aren't healthy)

Yea a lot of my friends smoke weed regularly and they are extremely lazy people and poor students.
Thats not to say they are bad people, they are good friends of mine and I hang out with them all the time.

I don't understand people who smoke pot... they don't want to touch cigarettes, but they think weed is ok.

I used to chase each bowl I smoked with a cigarette to enhance the buzz. Then I'd drink myself into a coma.
College was fun. Stupid, but fun.

I'm a genius, motherfucker!
Well, I was smart enough to use my powers of observation to determine each of my professor's personal bias' and attitudes, and then I simply mirrored them in my class discussions and papers. There is nothing a professor likes more than to have their ego validated by their student repeating their opinions back to them. It is far more important that your professors like you than it is that you actually excel at your studies. Especially when you're a graduate of the arts, and not the sciences.
That and I'm a fucking genius. ;)
I can't believe you're promoting that kind of unethical behavior as an educator yourself. ;)

Smoking weed is part of growing up. Just remember that the state of radness is proportional to one's risk of health decline.

It's Canada, it's BC, and more importantly it's the Lower Mainland. The cops here smoke joints in their cars on breaks. If you're not dealing, and don't have more than three ounces on you, with intent to sell, you won't get arrested. Walking down a street with a joint is nothing. Kids used to roll it in class when I was in school, and smoke it in the smoke-pit during school itself.

There is a simple solution to this.
Be prepared.
Stock up on Doritos, celery, bread for making toast, make sure you have ample peanut-butter, and a library of CD's on hand.

Didn't know he was Canadian. Still, it makes you stupid (meaning weed).

Peanut Butter? Are you trying to kill the kid? Eating PB high and you'll choke to death! Don't liten to him, MrCoffee!

I didn't know telling him not to do it was promoting it's use. :)
I simply refuse to patronize when talking to younger people about drugs. Not all drugs are equal in terms to detrimental effects. When adults and the media try and paint pot use as the same as cocoaine or heroine, the kids don't believe their claims and therefore don't trust anything they say when it comes to drugs. Also, admitting to past drug use doesn't invalidate an opinion to NOT do them. If anything, it gives the former user more experience and credibility in the subject.
If government agencies and parent groups would just be honest about each drug and have an real conversation about them, they would get much more respect from teenagers and more would listen to them.

yeah so uuh im gonna stay away from peanut butter, and i wont be smoking it very much and yes the cops dont even take the weed if it is under 3 ounces, and if you have alcohol you poor it out and they leave...otherwise this isnt going to be a regular occurance...once in a while...

and if you have alcohol you poor it out and they leave.
Only if they're assholes, or if you can't sweet-talk your way out of it.
The time of season depends too, and where you are.
I'll break it down:
Spring: Moderate crackdown
Summer: Extreme crackdown
Fall: Moderate crackdown
Late Fall: Slim crackdown
Winter: They'll just talk to you
Now the locations:
Private property: Run
On a street: walk calmly
School or park: walk the opposite direction of them not panicking.
Thusly, with my experience in booze, the best drinking occurs in the Winter (yet not near New Year's) or the late autumn, and is usally the best when the troupe is mobile, and not planted for too long. Hence taking to the streets. Planting your feet makes you louder, and lets the cops get there faster.
Plus it depends on how many of you there are, and if you party with a native kid. If the native kid has a sense of humour, put it all on him, and the cops won't know what to do, in fear of offending him. It's quite fun.

Hardly cheap. Just smart. In today's college campuses you have two choices:
1) Voice your own opinion, defend it well, and still get average grades for "daring" to challenge the great all-powerful professor's world view
or
2) Be his parrot, work half as hard, and get all A's
If I thought I could get the same grades challenging the opinion of the professor, I would do just that. Having 7 years of undergrad and graduate work under my belt, you can be assure you will RARELY be rewarded for displaying an open mind.

When everybody in our class had to give a presentation on evolution, I showed the other side of the story, where the evolution-theory was incorrect and illogical. I got a 7, which was decent, most people had a 6.

You know, I find this to be very true and it's probably one of the more frustrating things about education. My 9th grade history teacher was the biggest prick, and if you didn't totally follow his ideas and basically give him a handjob, he would give you a bad grade. I failed my mid-term exam because I basically went head on against him, and whether my ideas were good or not, he failed me, and it was ridiculous. Then for the final exam I played into his game and I got an A on the final. When he hands back the paper he gives this asshole grin, like he knew exactly what he was doing...So annoying...
Luckily I go/went to a more liberal college where I believe this happens less, though I'm sure it still happens. I don't know, I just think I don't really learn much if I'm just jerking off my professor, but yeah, I guess you have to give it up for the grades.

Well I'm glad you had a teacher who gave you a good grade on a project where you expressed yourself, but a single anecdote doesn't disprove anything I've said, if that was what you were trying to accomplish.

Germ, I hate to say this, but it was the liberal professors I had to jerk off the most. I had one that was an open communist, and I had the gall to argue against socialism in one paper, and he gave me nothing but praise in his comments but I still only got a C+. I learned my lesson and got nothing but A's from him then on out.
You can "fight the power" all you want, but in a scholoastic environment you may as well be headbutting a brick wall. Argue with your professor, accomplish nothing, cause yourself grief, and you get nothing but grades far below what you deserve.
Tickle his balls a little, make your life easy, get great grades, and then cash them in for a career you enjoy.
Easy decision.

I guess it depends a lot on the teacher. I'm (still) doing my bachelor thesis at the moment, my supervisor doesn't give me much freedom to come up with something myself, so I'm mostly doing what he likes to see. And a bit more.

I don't necessarily mean that the professors are liberal, but the school and curriculum are. For example, we actually don't receive letter grades unless we ask for them. You receive written evaluations from the professors instead. This at least helps the grade mongering a bit. Some say it hurts if and when you apply to graduate school, but the grades can be reexamined and managed. Anyway, not having that letter grade either lets you slack off more, or maybe makes you just concentrate on the work and not that letter or GPA...I don't know, it works okay for me.

More or less! Kindergarten for 18-22 year olds. We've got some good almuni though. Mostly actors and writers, but some good scientists and such too.

I really just got to give it up for that comment...
Though would make your resume stand out...
Welcome to club stoner MrCoffee, woo.
My advice, you smoked, you enjoyed it, smoke again. Most people get put off by feelings of paranoia and shit, I say, fuck it, learn to cope with it and soon you will build your tolerance to a level whereby it is no longer detrimental to your mental health.
I have been regularly smoking weed/hash for some 7 years now. For myself it enhanced my schoolwork, I found I was concentrating harder and became more passionate about my work.
Now years after leaving school I am qualified licenced stock broker and financial advisor. I earn over £40,000 per annum. For those of you unfamiliar with exchange rates thats over $80,000 a year people.
Now tell me all stoners a lazy bums.
So to say that smoking weed is 'entirely' detrimental is wrong. Alcohol... now theres one mother fucker of an evil drug. It causes death, violence, hangovers. Like cigarettes it is only a legal drug because of the massive tax revenues that government generates from them.
A very good friend of mine suffers from crippling multiple sclorosis, he literally can not find the strength some mornings to stand long enough to take a piss without collapsing. Get a joint inside him however and suddenly he regains all motor function, he can ride a bike, drive a car, without it he is stuck, vegetablised on his sofa in front of the t.v all day.
I will agree though, for some people smoking weed is bad, it does prevent them from functioning properly. it does mess with their head, I have seen it. These people however are just lightweights who cant handle a little bit of intoxification.
LEGALISE IT!! aight!

Ric loves him some weed, who knew...
My college experience has been the same. College papers, unless you're writing for your phD aren't really a reflection of personal views as much as finely tuned, mechanically correct throwbacks of whatever the fuck your prof has covered.
anyway, I live in BC and have for the most part experienced lenient weed enforcement.
However, last spring I was told I was under arrest and pushed up against my buddy's vehicle while being verbally abused by some ancient cop with a young rookie who were there on a complaint. We were in some vacant parking lot. Anyway, I got my cock searched(no joke) and recieved an open alcohol ticket for having a beer on me....which is fair(not the strip search). However, they gave my buddy who was driving a 24 hour suspension and a drug charge on his license, even though they didn't find any bud in the car(and believe me, they searched it completely) or any bud on us. Not only that, they didn't breathalyze my buddy cuz in doing so, that technically negates their ability to lay a drug charge down.
He filed a complaint to the commissionar and all that. All he got back is a bunch of postponent letters and finally a dick to the face in that they believed the officers conducted themselves accordingly and there was nothing wrong.
which sucks cuz we're canadian right? I live in small town interior BC. And a cop treated us like we were meth dealin. Experiences like this make me think twice when the hotbox is cookin up these days. That was just one cop though. The rookie looked embarrassed to be part of it.
weed ain't a thing though. just be smart about your use. There's a whole diff system below the border that will fuck up your future if you have a record.
edit: btw, what's so bad about the grateful dead? they've got some winners.
