Alright, the title is a tad misleading, BioShock officially comes out tomorrow.

Who is planning on picking it up?

Make sure to post all your impressions here.

EDIT: Remember, BioShock is $49.99 for 360 and $39.99 for PC at Circuit City.

Damn it, I wish I weren't in debt.

Tell me, what would you do, if you had the choice of either spending your next paycheck to spend about $2000 on a brand new PC to play BioShock, or using that paycheck to continue paying off school debts that won't be paid off until a year from now?

Answering just buy a 360 doesn't count. I don't want a 360.

I am hoping to pick it up for the Xbox 360, I need to play through the demo first though to make sure I enjoy it. I'm sure I will though.

Downloading the demo now.

In all seriousness, I'd pay off your debt. Debt is the root of all evil.

Yeah I think I will be prudent and continue paying off the debt. I never know when I may lose my job, so I want to pay it off as soon as I can. Right now everything I make minus some food/drink/girlfriend spending needs goes towards paying it off.

Well, I played the demo last night on my PC and it ran smoothly (35-45 fps) on my system. I was playing it at 1680x1050 with everything maxed out, which makes me very happy in the pants.

My specs at a glance so you can guesstimate your performance:
nVidia 8800gts 640mb
Core 2 Duo e6600
2gb of Corsair eXtreme RAM
Win Xp

One note, my CPU is set to overclock itself up to about 2.9ghz under heavy stress. However, I didn't overclock my video card at all.

Also, when I was installing the demo, it said that the game was optimized for a dual core system and that if you had single core you'd want in excess of a 2.6 ghz chip.

Otherwise, I liked the game very much. It has a great atmosphere to it. At many times I found myself just walking around looking at all the different random shit they put in there. The graphics are extremely beautiful.

Do you have water cooling, or are fans enough? That automatic overclocking bit, is that a feature of your motherboard, or something with software, or what? Which mobo do you have?

Well, it's not really a bug. It just the way it designed. I'm disappointed, but didn't even notice it when I was playing the game.

And manasecret:

I just have fans, no water cooling for me. My cpu runs fairly cool even under heaviest load (<55). It's a feature of my motherboard. It might also be on other mobos, nut sure. I have the Gigabyte 965P-DS3.

Bought the game this morning and have been playing it since. Fantastic. The Big Daddies can be quite hard if you don't go in with a plan.

I feel like I should be stuffed in a mental institution, because this game doesn't look remotely fun, or enjoyable to me.

Just like most other first person games.

Thanks lot, HL2.

To be extremely objective, the game has been over hyped some, but it is still an excellent game. It's nothing earth shattering, but the environments are stunning, the story is excellent and the combat is solid.

demonoid has a legit torrent i think, but i don't mind supporting good developers and it looks like lots of hard work and time went into the game, it's very polished. the other thing is the game needs to be web activated, and that's too much trouble when you can just get it at circuit city for 40 bucks :p

No... save the little sisters!

ha, maybe i will, maybe i will....apparently if you save a few you'll get some good stuff

my only complaint about the game so far is that the shotgun feels underpowered, i'm so used to the shotgun blowing away my opponents in one shot at point blank range...but it's hard to hold a grudge when you can set things on fire!

Bond

Well Ive been doing a bit of research on the PC version, and theres a big bunch of people seriously pissed off that you need a Pixel Shader 3.0 capable graphics card to play this game. According the the polls that valve runs through steam, over 40% of gamers have a card that is not 3.0 capable, and thats a lot of people. Sounds like a lot of the ATI's produced over a year ago dont have it (mine included), apparently ATI decided to stick with the 2.0. This is despite the fact that many of these cards are actually more powerful than cards that can play the game, only because they support 3.0. This has to make you wonder, especially with the whole "Nvidia: The way its meant to be played" nonsense, if Nvidia had something to do with this. There is hope though, some guy got it working with a patch he made in about an hour...some textures missing, ect, but its apparently playable. Anyways, hopefully 2K games gets off their lazy asses and just releases a patch that fixes the problem.

On a side note, I did play the demo on my laptop, which has an Nvidia, and it was fun, but it didnt run too well...very beautiful though.

I got it. Spoilers below:

There are two options to deal with Cohen after he tells you to go away. You can either kill him or let him live. Killing him now gives you the key to the music box, but you can also let him live and encounter him again later in the game. (You get certain achievements by not killing him initially that you can't get if you kill him right away)

Just beat the game, the boss fight was overly easy. However the whole game was so great that the final fight seemed like a plateu, not a decline. I got the good ending, since i didnt harvest any of the little sisters, and i must say that though it was a minute long it seemed appropriate and I thought it was good ( especially that part when you're in the hospital bed and the hands reach out for yours. All in all it was a wild ride and a great one at that. I'd like to hear some thoughts from you guys if you've beat/played it at all. Bond?

Ya, so BioShock... boring! Yep, I said it.

After multiple attempts to progress through BioShock, I realized something, this game is not fun to play. It bores me to death. Graphics are great, give my props to the artists. The musical score is annoying and quite possibly the worst music I've ever heard, but it fits the game well. But playing the game? I'll pass.

See, BioShock's slow story has yet to become apparent, and believe it or not, has yet to capture my attention. Some people call it art, I call it poor storytelling. This game reminds me of the Final Fantasy series, everyone says "Oh, well you need to get at least 10 hours in and you'll understand everything. The story is great." Well let me tell you something in return, I'm not about to give 8 or so hours of my life to find out if I indeed like a game. If it can't hook me from the beginning, it's not getting my money.

BioShock seems to be stuck trying to figure out whether it's a first-person shooter, or an adventure game. I spend more time running around searching than I do fighting, but unlike great adventure games like Banjo-Kazooie, I'm not having fun doing in. I do enjoy beating people down with my wrench, it reminds me of Condemned, only that game was enjoyable. But aside from that, there is nothing above average about the combat system. The action isn't enough to keep me entertained by any means. Besides, I rarely die from fighting the enemies. It's those stupid bots that come out and make the game more annoying than it already is.

Between the bots and the turrets, I never want to play this game again. I'm sick of hacking things, it's way overused, and I still don't have any idea why I'm running around Repture acting like an idiot, so I decided to solve that problem, and stop running around Rapture.

I'm prolly about 40% thru I am guessing. The game is great, graphics are clean and visuals are great (on X360 I have it)

I guess there is a balance issue, I find I am able to use my wrench everywhere and save all this ammo/eve and kill everyone with my wrench, die, respawn and continue. It's a love/hate thing but ye very interesting. And I am playing it on hard

I am saving the little sista's, I can't kill em. I was thinking to myself "is saving them really being nice as you're bringing em back into a world of crap". But I decided too.

I love the sound, very creepy, the speech is spot on (some of those voices really freak me out) and them some, the atmosphere it creates is unlike anything I've ever played. I feel like I'm really in Rapture and I just wanna get outta there asap. When you get a new plasmid? it's great how they show the 60's cartoon strip.

Hacking is a bit tedious, but for some reason I enjoy doing it.

Overall great game, great ideas, slightly overrated but the story and atmosphere it draws you into is what stands out from anything else.

heheh a lot of it is true, especially the dying part of the game. Like i said i can run around weilding my wrench with no fear of dying (due to the low cost of dying)! So it does make the game a lot less scary.

gekko
09-06-2007, 10:25 PM
Wielding the wrench is just about the only fun I had. My roommate laughed at me because he's always out of ammo and I have maxed out on almost everything because I use my wrench exclusively.

During the demo I learned the AI patterns of the attacks of the enemies, so it's fairly easy to dodge and attack. I once took on a room of 5 or 6 at once without dying, or using health. The AI is not too complex in their fighting. Wrench-wielding in Condemned was much more challenging.

gekko
09-06-2007, 11:31 PM
No, I returned it to GameFly. I don't play games I don't enjoy, it defeats the purpose to playing for entertainment purposes. I returned it so I could get Skate, which I'll keep for a week or so, before returning for Halo 3, which I'll keep for a week or so, before returning for PGR4, rinse, and repeat.

Only game I'm forking money over for in the near future is GH3. The rest I don't have much time to play, so I'll rent, get a little feel the couple times I'll play them, and return. If I care when I get more time, they'll be cheaper to buy.

To keep in line with this debate, Bioshock will probably go down as one of the few games I've ever purchased, never played and gave away.
