View Full Version : Mafia: THE THING
Dylflon
08-13-2007, 12:35 PM
The game will commence in an hour and a half. Role PMs will be going out now. Do not share these PMs with anyone.
Copy and pasting, screen shotting, or forwarding your role PM to show other players is against the rules.
RULES:
Mafia is a game of good vs. evil. The good in this case, is the arctic research team. The bad, is the bodysnatching aliens.
All roles were assigned through use of a random number generator.
The goal of the research team is to root out and eliminate all of the aliens in the game. Each player votes on who they believe is the most likely to be an alien. At the end of aevery 24 hour block, the player with the most votes is eliminated. In the event of a tie, a random number generator will be used to decide who is eliminated.
Use this formatting for voting:
I !vote for Dylflon
You may retract your vote at any time. Do not edit your old vote. Use retractions.
I !retract Dylflon.
You can vote and retract as many times as you like. Each player must vote every day.
There are also special roles on the good side. One such role is the vigilante. The vigilante can choose one player each round to remove from the game. The guardian can protect one player each round from both being killed by the vigilante and from being taken over by aliens. The seer can target one player each round to investigate. After the round, I will PM them with information about their targetted player. This information will consist of the player's role and whether or not they are infested by aliens.
Specials may at any time refrain from using an ability.
But all information regarding the targets of your special actions must be PMed to me by 10:30 am PST/2:30 pm Eastern!
The alien selects one person each turn to convert into an alien. At that time, the converted player adopts the alien's win condition and is essentially on the bad guy team.
If a player who has networked with other players has been converted, it is not against the rules for them to tell the other aliens what they know. For this reason, it is in your best interest to KEEP YOUR ROLES SECRET unless circumstance dictates otherwise.
If the vigilante/guardian/seer are converted, they maintain their special roles but use them for evil rather than good.
There are a couple hidden game mechanics in here as well to spice things up a bit.
For either side to win, the opposing side must be entirely wiped out.
-voting for each day closes at 11 am PST/2 pm Eastern
-dead players get one goodbye post but this post cannot contain any information pertaining to the game. After their one post, dead players may no longer post in the thread. Nor may they contact living players.
-The results of each day will be presented via daily narrations.
-You must have two posts per day in order to be considered an active player. Failure to do this without excuse too many times will lead to your removal from the game.
-When a player is killed, their role and infestation status will be revealed in the narration.
If you have any questions in the thread type !Clarification followed by what you want to know

First narration:
Antarctica, Winter, 1982
A lone husky speeds across the snowy ice fields running as if the devil were chasing him. The devil in this case is a Norwegian helicopter occupied by two very upset scientists. This wouldn’t be so bad if one of these men wasn’t operating a high powered hunting rifle complete with scope. Shots ring through the cold arctic air, sending tufts of white upwards as if it was snowing in reverse.
The dog has the advantage today. The gunman only gets off one good shot per pass and this husky is young and quite quick on its feet. The Norwegian gunman attempts to dispatch of the dog by means of grenade but misses his target by at least fifty yards.
At this point, the dog and the Norwegians are playing a game of attrition. The winner will be determined by which runs out of energy first; the dog or the helicopter. The dog could probably keep running for hours as per his training. Helicopters have only so much fuel. Of course, dogs shouldn’t know this.
Soon though, a better alternative presents itself.
The men of American Arctic Research Outpost 31 sit comfortably in their mess hall, playing cards and shooting the shit. Nauls, the young cook and self-claimed soul brother cooks omelets on two different stoves. He moves between the two stoves and the refrigerator on roller skates while dancing to the music blasting from his boom box.
If it weren’t for the music, the men would have heard shots ringing through the air much sooner. It wasn’t until a helicopter had set down right next to their outpost, that they noticed anything was amiss. Some watched scene that would unfold through the window while others instinctively rushed outside to see what all the commotion was about. One of the Norwegian men occupying the intruding helicopter rummaged through a box for more grenades. To the men of Outpost 31, he seemed clearly deranged shouting nothing but gibberish. Though more likely we has speaking Norwegian. The man pulls the pin on a grenade to throw at the husky that has now run into the camp. However, when he extends his arm back, he loses his grip on the explosive, creating unfavorable repercussions for the helicopter and the other Norwegian man inside of it.
The Norwegian gunman continues to shout like a lunatic, and fires two bullets at the dog, one of which strays into the leg of meteorologist George Bennings. The pain is searing and Bennings has no problem making everyone aware of that fact.
Finally, unable to bear no more, Garry (captain and manager of the outpost) decides to take action. From inside the mess hall, Garry upholsters his revolver, smashes a windowpane and fires one shot which finds its way between the eyes of the raving Norwegian.
The husky, now safe from all predators, runs immediately to Clark, the base’s dog handler. Clark tries to soothe the dog, convincing it that everything is alright. Some of the men create a semi-circle around the dead Norwegian body and struggle in vain to piece together the events that just transpired. Others such as helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady instead rush to put out the flaming Norwegian helicopter.
MacReady, taking control of the situation, instructs Clark to put the husky in the dog kennel and organizes a team to bury the dead bodies of the crazed Norwegian men.
That evening the men are ill at ease. Clark didn’t put the dog in the kennels but rather let it wander around the camp in fear that the other dogs would gang up on it. Most of the crew at the arctic research station resign themselves to drinking in their rooms. The mechanics Childs and Palmer smoke weed and watch old game shows on betamax tapes. The rescued husky walks from room to room, observing the occupants of the station.
Tomorrow, MacReady and Doctor Copper will travel to the Nowegian base to find clues about what lead to the deceased scientists erratic behavior.
Though tonight will hold more surprises than any of the men working at this research post could anticipate.
The game has begun.

There will be no clues in the narration as to who is taken over and who is not.
The Point IS that you don't know who is who. Because if the alien is educated, then it makes it too easy to take over the good guy specials.

Bennings, the research team’s meteorologist sits alone nursing a glass of scotch. He contemplates the events of that day and his near fatal (not really) shooting at the hands of the Norwegians. But right then, something foreign brushes up against his leg. He jumps up knocking over the card table that provided a surface for his drink. The scotch did not survive the fall.
It was the husky.
“Clark! Take the fucking dog to the kennel! I was shot today!”
Bennings would use this to appeal for sympathy two more times that night when Childs has his TV too loud and when he wants Nauls to get up to make him some waffles.
Clark saunters into the room at no alarming pace and lightly grabs the husky by the scruff.
“Let’s go.”
Clark puts the new arrival in kennel, locks the door, and wanders off to go to bed. The new husky sits, looking intently at the other dogs…inquisitive even. The rest of the dogs start to back away. Some of them growl, others whine, but all are terrified as if they know exactly what is about to happen. The intruder husky begins to convulse, its eyes rolling back in its head. The dog begins to spray a strange liquid on the other dogs. The sled dogs are all barking their heads off at this point. One starts trying to bite through the wire mesh that constitutes the kennel walls. Then a series of whip-like red tentacles extend from the intruder dog which wrap around the other huskies.
Clark reenters the room to see what the commotion is about.
“Yeah, yeah, you all need to just-“
Clark stares in horror at the scene unfolding before his eyes. He is almost too dumbfounded to hit the alarm that was mounted a mere two feet away from him.
The alarm blares throughout the camp, rousting the men from their beds. Several of them rush into the kennels lead by MacReady. They all stop dead uttering almost in unision
“What the fuck?”
“Go get Childs! Tell him to bring the flamethrower”, MacReady yells.
Garry decides it can’t wait and begins shooting the dogs that are wrapped in the alien’s tentacles.
Clark yells in horror and tackles Garry to the ground.
Fuchs, an assistant biologist rushes back into the room.
“MacReady! I can’t find Childs!”
“What do you mean you can’t find him?”
“Well, he’s not in his room and he’s not here.”
“Son of a bitch!”, MacReady yells as he rushes to the storeroom for one of Childs modified flamethrowers.
Clark can take no more and rushes into the kennel to save the remaining dogs. As he opens the kennel door, one dog bursts out, whining and scampering to safety. The alien dog extends one of its tentacles which then wraps around Clark’s jugular.
MacReady returns, wielding a flamethrower and prepares to set the whole kennel ablaze.
“Wait!”, shouts assistant mechanic Palmer, “Clark is still in there!”
The men observe the dog handler’s state. The alien being is strangling his with one tentacle while penetrating him with three others. The general consensus at this point is to burn the bitch down.
MacReady lets loose with the flamethrower burning up everything in its path. The alien dog makes a sickening cracking sound as it splits in half. One half burns to death while the other half extends tentacles upwards and pulls itself into the air duct.
The rest of the men stare on helplessly.

Jesus, go to work for a day and someone thinks you're suspicious.
!Clarification is this following a direct line that the movie did, or no?

Also, I think each chapter - or day - if you will, should get its own thread.
I had to rifle through three pages.
i think once each previous day has passed, that thread should become locked, ensuring no new posts in it, however in the present day instead.
It makes it easier for people like me who work 8am to 5pm, and and miss an entire day of posting. So this way if you do - you can go back, directly, and not have to search for your spot, and all that.
Just a thought.

Besides, I find this post HIGHLY questionable
The Professor has a point. If you want to win this game, you stay low-profile. You certainly don't want to draw attention to yourself.
Not that I would know who wóuld qualify for an alien...
Sooo Angrist... do you like fire much... say like in flamethrowers?
Haha. I read that post and changed my vote as well.
And... back to playing Madden.

I don't think Strangler is dumb enough to make it that blatantly obvious. I !vote manasecret Also pretty suspicious for a Bond...
!clarification! If the aliens can convert a player every round... ánd can work together to vote off persons... how do the good guys stand a chance?

I don't know alien, but I'm sure you'd know since you're the alien, and you're getting pretty desperate at that... alien. But I have to say you're posts are pretty clever.
And Typhoid posts only to vote against me? Is he your convert, Lt. Warf? YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED. Lets pray we have enough time before the last true fighter for humanity, namely ME, is killed by you paranoid fucks.

Wait... could it be Yoda? He seems to amke the most innocent posts, posting only just enough to keep himself in the game. Just enough to keep under the radar and keep infecting people. No point in voting for him now, though, since no one else has voted.
And by the way, is anyone else having issues with editing posts?

I wonder if the two aliens in cahoots (that is, ProfS and Bond, of course) know something about Angrist, and whether he has some special ability?

If you think it's Bond and me, why would you vote for Angrist when I'm on the verge of being lit up like a tiki torch? It doesn't make any sense.... unless.... hmmmm...

Hehe, this is actually pretty fun. And exciting. :D
I'll say this straight and honestly: I am not an alien. If I am correct, the aliens all know eachother, so for them it is very easy to vote people out. We, the good guys, need to stick our head together to survive. I guess it will become easier in 1 or 2 rounds. :)

This will certainly throw off the balance I had set up for this game.
