Personally, I'm so sick and tired about hearing about Rock Band. Ok, so you can play the drums. No one cares about the singing, and the guitar playing looks worse than GH2. All anyone cares about is "OMG, downloadable content planned from week 2! 100+ songs!" Yippie, so I can begin feeding them extra money right from the start. You and I both know they won't be free. Not to mention the game itself is insanely priced. That's what happens when EA publishes.
Meanwhile, Activision is making the best GH to date. Added a multiplayer battle mode, online play, co-op career play, and a much improved interface. The guys at Scorehero (the world record players) were recently invited to go play it, and they loved it. Where's the GH3 news? Hidden amongst Rock Band buffoons who will never buy all the shit anyway.
So I will throw the great GH3 news in your face until you all buy it. Carry on.

Some good tracks on there...Even Flow, Paint it Black, and there needs to be more RHCP. Playing bass for their tracks would be incredible.

I'll have my friends get both anyways. They probably will at any rate...hell, they have GH2 for the PS2 AND 360, and one purchased Steel Battalion. So, I'll enjoy the best of both worlds :p

Scorehero (http://www.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20711) got sent an exclusive video of Through the Fire Flames, the new bonus song like Jordan. Took Wolfe, the #1 player on 360, 20 attempts to beat it.
Sweet! :D

Why not just learn to play real guitar?

Because I don't feel like wasting away years of my life learning to play an instrument I have no interest in? Why don't you learn to drive a race car? Why don't you go steal a real car? Why don't you go coach a real professional football team?
That's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

I mean I see people who are just awsome at Guitar Hero...and I think to myself, if they woudve invested that much time into learning to play a real guitar, they would probably be pretty good at that too...then again some of them probably are.
I just have never seen the appeal in Guitar Hero...actually all rythym games for that matter, kinda bore me.

Noob question: do the Guitar Hero games and Rock Band come from the same developer?

Guitar Hero is (quite obviously) loads easier than playing a real guitar...
Memorizing the chords, learning to switch from chord to chord, muting strings, among many many other things (alternate tunings, 6 strings and 21 frets compared to 5 giant buttons) are all various techniques and such one much learn to become a "good" guitar player...
Guitar Hero requires that you learn to manage 5 giant buttons and a strum bar...
As Gekko said, becoming a "good" guitar player takes years and years, and is obviously a whole 'nother ballgame altogether (otherwise he'd be interested in learning to play a real guitar, which he's apparently not)...
Not to mention the fact that, in most people's cases, learning to play the guitar is just as "useful" in life as learning to play a guitar game... Just a hobby... Doesn't usually "get you anywhere"...

Noob question: do the Guitar Hero games and Rock Band come from the same developer?
Yes and no.
Harmonix developed GH, Red Octane published. Harmonix was bought out by MTV. Red Octane was bought out by Activision. They parted ways.
Red Octane picked Neversoft as the new developer for GH3, because of the huge passion Neversoft had for the GH games (it was an on-going discussion between owners for the years past).
Harmonix is developing Rock Band, which is being published by EA. Yes, EA.

First, EA has nothing to do with the game other than publishing. So I don't see what that honestly changes about the game itself, other than the fact content will be downloadable, and it will have the "EA, Challenge everything" logo on startup.
The main thing that bugs me about people trying to compare these, is that they're comparing them so basically.
Guitar Hero is about Guitars. (Gee, you think?)
It's nothing more, nothing less. It's DDR for the fingers.
Rock Band, is moreso the same, except not just based on a guitar, and a guitar alone.
Rock Band is not trying to be Guitar Hero. It's not a guitar simulation. It's a band simulation.
If you have Guitar Hero, you can get together with friends, and have gutar battles.
If you play Rock Band, you can get together with friends, and try and be a really crude DDR based band.
Guitar Hero is a good game, yes. It's fun, yes.
But Rock Band has such a good opportunity to be a good game, and people are shooting it down just because there is already a Guitar Hero game, and the two both include a guitar - so one must be ripping the others off, even though Rock band includes drums, and vocals - if you so desire.
Thank god people these days are willing to give something a chance, before discrediting it completely.

Publishers play a very significant role in game development. EA has the sole control to make or break this game.

Ah yes, but if you use the magic of sight and comprehension you would read:
(EA is merely distributing the game to retail; Harmonix and new parent company MTV are handling the actual development and publishing duties.)

Does anybody think it would be okay to get Guitar Hero III before I get Guitar Hero II? I'm just now getting into Guitar Hero, and I've played both part II and the 80's versions in Best Buy stores. I seem to be doing pretty good, even though I'm still waiting to master the medium difficulty level a bit more, before I move on to hard or expert. I figured that since I seem to be getting addicted to the game, I should probably invest in my own copies of Guitar Hero II and Rocks The 80's, instead of freeloading off of Best Buy for their demos.

You will be fine no matter what game you start with. HOPOs are improved as you go, and the HDTV lag issue isn't there anymore, but the game difficulty itself is pretty much identical.
I've heard GH was easier than GH2, but everyone who has played GH3 says it won't be much of a challenge to those who have mastered GH2. If you can beat all of expert on GH2, you have enough skill to be able to beat all the songs on GH3 after a few attempts. It's not like GH3 is designed only for people who have mastered the previous, it's at a similar difficulty, just with different songs.
But if you are just investing, I would say but GH3. It has the best guitar, and then just buy the stand-alones of the old ones.
But just a little word of advice, start on hard. You'll develop more bad habits than you can ever imagine playing easy and medium. It's not even worth it. Go hard, and never look back.

What kinds of bad habits would those be? Anyway I'm almost inclined to move on to hard, since I played Rocks the 80's yesterday and I was in the green when I completed "Holy Diver", and I was using the medium difficulty level. Mind you, there were times where I'd be in the green, then regressed to amber, and then back in the green again.
So am I completely doomed since I decided to start on easy, and then moved on to medium when I was feeling comfortable? I completed three songs on easy in GHII, and tried one of those three songs ("Possum Kingdom") on medium and completed that one on the firs try there. I mean I've seen people play on hard and expert and the don't even choke. So I didn't think I was worthy to try and run with the big leagues just yet. You know what I mean?

I started on Easy and Medium and the progressed to Hard on the first GH. It didn't seem to hurt me much. Just make sure that when playing on medium, you use your pinkie to hit the blue fret button. You cannot succeed in Hard without using your pinkie unless you are rediculously good.
Don't get me wrong, the transition from Medium to Hard will be difficult as you get used to hitting five buttons with only four fingers and it will take some time, but it's far from impossible.

Yes, back to the topic at hand.
I'm very excited to play the songs by Dragonforce and In Flames as I like both of those songs quite a bit. Should be nice and fast and metal. I had heard that there was supposed to be a song from Killswitch Engage as well, but I don't see it on that list.
*Goes to check the GH3 site*
Guess I was wrong. Still a pretty good song list though.

I'm only now seeing your response. I didn't think anybody would touch this thread ever again.
I've still been practicing in the stores, and I'm still doing it on medium. I've tried hard sometimes, and I'm still not doing all that great. Though I've actually completed two songs on hard. It's nothing to brag about though, since I finished them when in the red. "Bang Your Head" really throws you for a loop when it's about to end.
