US consumers forced into buying new 80Gb model - effectively there's been no price cut

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed with CVG that the 60Gb PS3 model is being phased out in the States, leaving the new 80Gb model as the only option for punters over the pond.

According to SCEE, the 60Gb model won't be available after July in the US, with reports stating SCEA cut the price to get rid of remaining stock.

SCEA company confirmed on Monday that it was slashing $100 off the price of the 60Gb model to $499, and that the 80Gb model will launch at the start of August at $599 - and come bundled with MotorStorm - the original cost of the 60Gb model.

Effectively then, there's no price cut - just better value for money.

In related news, SCEE has made its expected European PS3 announcement - 425 quid for a starter pack containing 60Gb PS3, two first-party games and two SixAxis controllers. The starter pack hits the UK on July 18.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

this is retarded. New model is still $599.99

I thought Sony finally got it in their thick heads that most people won't pay $600. If people won't pay $600 for a 60gb model, why would they pay $600 for 80gb?

Holy freaking crap.

Who's to say they don't start selling the 80 GB model for $499.99 once the 60 GB models are completely sold out? If that's what they plan on doing, they wouldn't announce it now anyways...if they did, who would purchase the 60 GB?

They're introducing the 80GB version as the one PS3 sku for the holidays and beyond, so they need to get rid of the 60GB version. Yeah, makes sense. Maybe the reduced price 60GB version will be around for a little while, maybe it won't? Maybe the 80GB version will drop in price shortly after the sellout, maybe it won't?

Sony could've just as easily done nothing at all, left the 60GB version at $599 and just went on with their day. But you know gamers, always trying to find problems with whatever they're handed. Is there a more insanely idiotic consumer base in the world?
