I'm in the process of shopping around for a DVD recorder now. I'm trying to decide whether I should get a DVD recorder/VCR combo, or just a plain DVD recorder. I'm leaning more towards the combo though. Would it make sense to get the combo if I already have a VCR though? I mean, if I wanted to transfer my VHS material to DVD, I could just hook up the VCR to the DVD recorder (non-combo version) and have the DVD recorder copy from it.
So, I guess I'm asking if anyone can think of a reason why one might want a DVD recorder/VCR combo if they already have a VCR.

I bought a DVD Recorder/VCR combo so I could transfer old VHS tapes onto DVD. And also, my mom wanted me to transfer our old home movies (which are on VHS) to DVD. I think its much easier and more convenient than connecting two separate devices (a DVD recorder and then a VCR).
I also had purchased it to record TV shows but Tivo is so much better so I don't use it for that anymore.
Purchasing the combo also takes up less room and frees up one more plug outlet.

You know, I forgot that there were DVD recorders with a hard drive. Anyway I haven't even seen any of those around as of late. I'd probably get that instead of a DVD recorder/VCR combo. People even say that there are disadvantages to the combo deals, where one part of it can go bad, and either just render the unit into an oversized DVD player, or oversized VCR.
I'm a long way from being able to afford TiVo, but what advantages do you find it to have over the VCR portion of your DVD recorder/VCR unit?
