Looking into purchasing a Mac for both work and school, and I'm somewhat torn between two options right now. I was originally just looking at a MacBook Pro, because of its portability, but now I'm checking out the iMac's and the big thing I'm noticing, obviously, is the huge price difference. From what I can tell, iMac's are nearly half the friggin price of the MacBook Pros, and yet both have almost identical specs (in many cases the iMacs are actually superior).

So I'm wondering...and I don't know much about Macs outside of general use, but besides the obvious portable benefits of a MacBook Pro, is there anything else that makes it the better choice over an iMac? For me, portability is a nice luxury, but for $1000 less I could live without it, you know?

Any Mac enthusiasts, your input would be much appreciated.

Well, it's kind of up to you. I mean, you obviously know the benefits of both. The only input I can think to add is that a not small number of Macbooks are having a battery inflation problem during charging and their cases are cracking.

There's very little difference in features. MBP has FireWire 800, only the 24" iMac does. MBP has DVI out, iMac has mini-DVI out. That's really just about everything.
