Kutaragi Gives Up, goes home

The engineer known as the "Father of the PlayStation" said Thursday that he would end his three-decade career at Sony Corp. in June in the wake of faltering sales of the latest version of what was once the world's bestselling video game system.

In the first five months, Sony sold 1.2 million PlayStation 3s in the U.S. That's 43% of the sales of PS2 over a similar period. By comparison, Nintendo sold nearly twice as many of its Wii game consoles, at a price of $250, in the U.S. — 2.1 million — and 5.84 million worldwide.

"A lot of Sony's problems were self-inflicted," Taylor said. "They stem from a decision-making process that took too much time, from design decisions that ended up resulting in a very expensive box and what I think is a lack of full awareness of the competitive threat."


:( :( I don't blame the dude. His baby which was doing so well as a brand, has been screwed over by greedy sony execs, who know nothing about gaming, and only about pushing the SONY brand, not the playstation brand.

The reason Kutaragi lost his job in the first place because he was the guy pushing for Blu-Ray, when everyone else wanted to drop it. He kept it around, PS3 was delayed, then it was released to less than impressive sales. Sony is estimating $1.5 billion in losses this year.

No one is going to come out and say it, but Kutaragi was fired over PS3, and now he's forced into retirement. It's time to move on, obviously things aren't working too well with Kutaragi. Better than Nintendo, they held on to Yamauchi for decades.

The first thing I thought when I saw the article at IGN was that he was forced into it also. I don't think sony would admit any weakness at this point, so they're probably the ones who decided to hide it... but.. with how some sites word what happend, it'd look almost just as bad.
