What was so great about the original? Because from the description of it, flying around freely as a weird jester in some kind of dreamworld, just doesn't sound like so much fun.
Ok I say weird jester in a dreamworld as exaggeration, because really the Mario world ain't any less weird. (Although this jester wardrobe this Nights character owns does look awfully creepy to me.) What really doesn't appeal to me is the "flying around freely" because, though on the surface it sounds great, that idea reminds me a lot of Ecco the Dolphin when that game turned 3D on Dreamcast. Yeah, the graphics looked great, but the free-form gameplay of going absolutely anywhere in all directions was too much for me -- that is, it made me nauseous. One of those games where the camera was so bad it made me nauseous (anyone else ever get that?).

Never played it myself but it looks as though the whole appeal of flying about was only so nice given the state of video games when it was released; a new level of freedom?
The game is designed by Takashi Iizuka, the man responsible for killing Sonic. He came up with the role-playing aspect of the Adventure games and was the lead designer on Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and most recently Shadow the Hedgehog. Some track record. Perhaps they should have just had him make NiGHTS 2 right away rather than destroy my favorite video game character.

Teuthida's first sentance is correct. It was one the first game on the Saturn to utilize the analog stick fully. But in the end, the game was still pretty much 2d. I didn't like the first game very much at all, and I'd probably be more excited about another crazy taxi game for Wii personally.

It seems our asexual hero NiGHTS will have the option of wearing persona masks to shape-shift into different forms, each granting new abilities and exploration possibilies.

The first of these is the dragon mask, capable of transforming you into a giant scaly beast immune to the powerful wind effects of the sky, followed by a dolphin mask that will let you take on the form of Flipper and venture to the depths of the ocean. Then last but not least is the rocket mask granting you supersonic speeds - a bit like Michael Jackson turning into a spaceship in Moonwalker as he attempts to rescue Annie from Joe Pesci's goons. Not that we've ever watched it.
But perhaps the most unique and exciting feature to be announced on the website is the new WiiConnect24 implementation. Familiar things like going online to exchange items with friends will be in, but the ability to change the scenery according to real-world seasons using the Forecast Channel is what's really nifty.
Unfortunately there's little more information than that, so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled. But its got us speculating. Could it be that we'd see in-game changes to reflect day-to-day forecasts? Speak your brain in our handily placed comment system below.
NiGHTS was originally created on SEGA Saturn back in 1996. It cast you in the unisex boots of a fantastical creature who undertook a fluid aerial-combat adventure in the skies of Nightopia.
SEGA Europe finally admitted a Wii version was in development yesterday, and that it will boast seven levels of mystical environments to glide through using the unique possibilities of Nintendo's console.
