So I was playing catch today at work with a football, and went in to catch a low pass and didnt catch it, instead jammed the hell out of my middle finger. I was with all the guys so I acted like it wasnt that bad, but it hurt like hell. A little while later I noticed it was starting to swell up, although it didnt seem to hurt as much. A few hours after that, its even bigger, and now its horribly painful, I can barley bend it now. Im going to the doctor tomorrow since my mom works there anyways, but has anyone ever done something like this? Its jammed on the middle part of my finger, so the joint near the nail is fine, but then past that it really starts to swell up.

Hells yeah ive done it. For me it usually gets all purple and swollen, but only hurts for a day or two.

Numerous times. Yank it back into place. I'm not joking, grab the end of your finger and pull it straight outwards. It hurts to do it, but once it pops the pain will be less and the swelling should go down over time.

Unless the finger is broken, which I doubt because I've done the exact same thing as you described a few times, with a football and once a basketball.

I've never jammed a finger.

My expertise lay in the fields of: Breaking bones, exposing bones, breaking teeth, or tearing a nose open.

Jamming fingers, I know nothing of. I can only imagine it hurts.

I've jammed several of my fingers too many times for me to remember, and I always remember that advice, to just pull it straight outwards. And I do it myself usually immediately nowadays. If you do it right away it hurts less than when all of it has a chance to swell up. Buuuuuut, I can never tell if it actually did anything to help. I mean, there's no satisfying *click* or *pop* or anything that lets me know I pulled hard enough and it's all back in place. Soooooooo.... I dunno, does that actually work?

EDIT: Are jammed fingers more serious than you think? You could have a fractured finger bone, or if it is simply dislocated, you finger could end up deformed! http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/finger-injuries.html

Stop scaring the kid Manasecret. :p

You could try holding your finger in some soda (not the drink, but the chemical stuff: Na2CO3), I've seen that help my mother when she had something comparable.

Last summer, my friend and I were hitting eachother with pool noodles and he punched my finger by accident. It hurt like a bitch but nobody realized he punched my finger and thought I was being a total wuss. So it was swollen and hurt like a bitch for a looong time. About two and a half weeks later when I was at work I couldn't take it anymore. So I pushed at the joint and i felt a slide and a pop. Turns out my finger had been dislocated the whole time.

well I went to the doctor this morning, my mom works there so its easy to get me in, and its free. Its not broken, but apparently I didnt actually "Jam" it per say, but I bent the finger back to the point where it broke the ligament that connects the 2 bones in my finger. Ive got the finger in a splint I guess you would call it, for 2 to 3 weeks. It keeps the finger bent, and I cant move it. It sucks, but im just glad its not my writing hand.

Ive actually got some Vicaden left from like a year ago when I collapsed my lung, I took that last night to help me sleep. That stuff really works, although its not that painful anymore.

I might just party this weekend and drink a lot and try to forget about it because its really got me bummed...its amazing how much you cant do when you no longer have a functioning middle finger...I cant play guitar, I cant play golf, and I have major problems doing simple things like tying my shoes or typing. This post took me far too long to type, although I can allready feel my brain starting to learn to use my ring finger where I used to use my middle finger.

I once had a bone in my right (& writing) hand dislocated, I could't use it for weeks. Since I couldn't write, I figured I couldn't go to school. That's when I discovered NintendoDolphin.net. :D

I searched Wikipedia for 'jammed finger' and that's the description that first came up, under something called 'mallet finger'. As far as I know I've never gotten a jam so bad that it tore the ligament.... ouch.
