View Full Version : Wii Locking up?

Just out of curiousity, has anyone else ever had the Wii lock up on them? It did to me once while I was browsing the internet, so that time wasnt a big deal, but just today it happened while playing Zelda, and I lost about an hour of play time. That made me angry. Its only happened twice in well over 40 hours of playtime for me total on it, so thats not a lot I guess. Im just wondering if im the only one.

Oh, and one other thing that is much more minor but has been bugging me slightly, and it requires a little explination: After I set up Wii to work with my router, the router it would randomly stop working while I was browsing the internet on my main computer, causing me to have to reset it. I suspected this had something to do with the Wii's standby connection constantly accessing it while it was also being used by my main computer.(shouldnt happen I know, but I have the cheapest router ever made) Anyways, I was right, I went to my options in the Wii menu, and turned off the Standby connection, which solved the problem. According to the Wii manual, if you still have Wiiconnect24 on but have the standby connection off, the wii can still access the internet, it just will only do it when its turned on. So I thought, fine, problem solved, I should still be able to access the news and weather channel and stuff just fine. Anyways, the problem now is, I can still access the internet channel and browse the internet with my Wii just fine, but if I try to get on the news or weather channel, it says that wiiconnect24 is turned off, check your options. But thats not true, I clearly have Wiiconnect24 ON in the options, only the standby connection is off. Anyways its strange that the news and weather channel appear to require the standby connection, while the internet channel does not. Im not sure if I can get on the shop channel, I havent tried yet since. Anyways, not a HUGE deal by any means, but if anyone could shed any light on the subject that would be cool.

Otherwise, I love my wii, no complaints!

EDIT: After talking with Deathshand about the issue, his also locks up, but for him its never during gameplay. Its when transitioning from one thing to another on the menu. He says sometimes it just takes abnormally long to load stuff, or sometimes it locks up entirely. He said its happened to him maybe 5 times. So it appears his problem is different than mine. He also mentioned that his console stays abnormally hot, even when it sitting off in standby mode. Apparently almost to the point where it almost hurts to touch the bottom. Im not sure if mine has ever gotten that hot, but I have noticed it does warm up. Anyways, he says his is sitting horizontally, and the fan isnt blocked. Mine is sitting vertically without using the stand. Im just trying to get all the information I can out there so we can get to the bottom of this.

I had that same problem. I called Nintendo, got straight to a live tech support guy (which suprised me, no waiting at all), and he fixed my problem. Anyways, they had me unplug the console for 3 minutes, then plug it back in, and try re-synching at that worked. Who knows why 3 minutes, but it worked. Try it.

Aside from the Internet Browser locking up (which is a software issue) this is the only problem I've experienced. Occasionally it will take a long time to transition between Home and a program. And very rarely it locks up entirely instead of making the transition.

I've had around 5 problems with it so far. Twice something went wrong while booting up the system and it would shut down again and the Wiimotes wouldn't work. Resetting (removing the batteries for a sec) the Wiimotes didn't work, so I tried unplugging the Wii from the power and that solved it.
Three times (basicly every time I tried) it crashed when I switched a game disc while in the game, instead of in the menu. You can't acces the menu AFTER you switched the game disc, it crashes every time, telling you to shut down the system. A reset works just fine.

I did the unplug/replug and that fixed it thankfully.

No problems here so far, except it took a little long to get to the Mii channel once. Otherwise, flawless.

Howdy. I almost made a happy birthday thread for you yesterday but figured the probability of you seeing it was rather low.

haha, actually, thinking about the birthday thread that brought me back here last year is what made me think of coming back. that and the fact that I just got my Wii about a week and a half ago.

Speaking of friend codes, thats another thing that im wondering...do friend codes work if I have wii-connect24 on but standby off? So many questions...

i haven't checked my friend code yet. i only briefly fiddled around with online (set it up yesterday) and today it wasn't working for some reason. so once i get it, i'll post it here... but i'm not sure exactly how it all works.

FYI if you hold down the power button on the Wii for I think five seconds, the LED turns red and the Wii completely shuts down, which gives the same result as if you had unplugged and replugged the power cord.

Now there's some good advice, thanks. :) I guess that's why we should read manuals...

This just in:

When I downloaded the Everybody Votes Channel, I noticed it had a number of flickering lines running down the screen... It was a bit distracting, but c'mon... It's the everybody votes channel, who cares, right?

Well today I booted up Zelda and noticed it had the exact same flickering lines...

It's not the TV (I tested the screen with my PS2, and switched the Wii to 3 different video outputs)...

It's strange because they're not always there (for example, menu screens never seem to have the flickering lines... But the gameplay itself does)...
But the problem definately seems to be coming from either the Wii itself, or it's video cables...

Either way, it's quite disheartening... Anybody spare a reassuring pat on the back?

Have you tried unplugging the Wii? That seems to fix things sometimes. You don't have an extra set of cables, do you? That way you could test whether it's the Wii or cables.

And I'm sure that Nintendo will give you a free repair. :) Don't worry.
