Well, looks like Nvidia is calling Nintendo out on their statements that graphics dont matter. Im not sure Nintendo actually ever said that graphics dont matter, but whatever. Seems to me Nvidia are just being a bunch of whiny babies since the Wii is selling so well, and the chip is ATI...

ATI would argue the same battle.
of course a company that makes graphics cards is going to argue that graphics are the most important thing.
and i dont know if nintendo said it in those words. but they have muttered things of that nature multiple times.
Hahaha, talk about talking out of your ass.

Well, Nintendo's quote was certainly taken out of context; but I think it obvious that there's some truth to nVidia's point of view.

"They're talking nonsense," he said of Nintendo assertion that videogame graphics have reached a saturation point. "It's ridiculous sot say that graphics don't matter. That's like saying 'The quality of my TV screen doesn't matter.' Oh really? So then in that case, you can go watch 24 in black-and-white on a seven-inch screen. It's nonsense to say graphics don't matter. I think we can do a lot better, but I think we'd like to see graphics encompassing the gameplay."
I find this funny hehe :)

The comparison to the TV is rediculous. Obviously there is a difference between a 32" flat screen TV and a 7" B&W. Nintendo's talking about the difference between a 42" SDTV and a 42" HDTV. Sure there is a difference, but a lot of people either a) can't tell the difference or b) simply don't care.

Well..... this isn't about HD or not, it's about the detail of graphics. Amount of polygons, lighting effects etc.

Yeah I know, I was going off of nVidia's TV analogy.

hehe...
if people cant tell the difference between SDTV and HDTV, they might want to have their eyes checked. the difference is HUGE.
now if your saying the difference between 1080i vs 1080p or maybe 720p vs 1080p. then you'd have a point by saying many people cant tell the difference.

Ahh.. the days of my sig! I think the quote I took is from the old CEO dude or something lol. Saw how well cube turned out. :o
But yeah, either of the companies would argue the same thing.

What's going on? Didn't TheGame used to be so sure of his opinion that he would argue it as if it was fact just like Professor S? What's all this "I think" and "lol"? Or am I thinking of a different TheGame somehow?

@_@ I'm retired from that stuff! (But don't test me.)
how would he argue that anyway? its not an opinion, its a quote. lol

Yes you're right. But still, the use of lol alone threw me off, didn't seem like a "TheGame" thing to say.

I'm curious, what caused the change of heart?
I personally believe that anyone who believes that graphics make a game or that graphics are the be all and end all of the gaming industry quite clearly has little or no knowledge of just exactly what it is they are talking about.
It's as though they thought to themselves -
''I know, if I make up some crap and say the words polygons and graphics it will sound like I know what I am talking about''
I will say this only once 'Gameplay Makes The Game What It Is, and nothing else'
That's why people still play the N.E.S
That's why people still play the Mega Drive (Genesis)
That's why people still play the Playstation
By todays standards, all graphically, crap. Does that mean the games are crap?
NO it certainly doesnt. In fact the said consoles STILL support some of the greatest most innovative games on the market and many have yet to be surpassed.
Oblivion - one of the graphically most spectacular games on the market. But did I enjoy it any more than morrowind? Did it change the gameplay at all?
NO and NO... it just looked prettier.
Random Person - 'I am getting a Playstation 3 because it will be the most powerful console and have the best graphics.'
My Reply - 'I am gonna get me a wii at half the price because it will have the best, most innovative and enjoyable games on it'
You see what I am saying?
If not then God give me strength...

I dont see kids going out and buying an NES every day, or bugging their moms for an NES and a copy of Kid Icarus for Christmas because it's so amazing.
It seems people can never combine the two spectrums.
The people who are for graphics, get told graphics mean nothing.
And the people who are against graphics, say gameplay is everything.
Hello, brilliant idea here.
They both contribute symbiotically.
You can have a crap game look amazing, and it will still be a crap game.
You can have an amazing game be 8-bit, and it will be a crap game. Why, you ask? Compared to today. Kids these days didnt grow up playing what we did. Most dont know what the hell a "Dreamcast" even is. They've never blown a cartidge, and shook it to hear the tingy noises inside.
Amazing games to us for the 8/16-bit era are only amazing because we grew up with them. They're what we enjoyed in our childhoods.
Kids now cant get immersed in a storyline if each person's face looks like an identical block of peach, with maybe a little shading of orange around the edges.
The old games we find amazing (The old NES FF games/ Chrono Trigger / Nothing else comes to mind but you get the point) are that way because they were our childhood.
I wouldnt lump the playstation in that, nor the N64. Those have moderate graphics, compared to Marble Madness, or Sk8 or Die.
I wouldnt be amazed if kids now, couldnt give two ****s about Final Fantasy 7.
Hell, I wouldnt be surprised if some of you didnt even like that game. Welcome to subjectivity. The sole ideal that the gaming industry runs on.

i'd say the same thing about people who actually believe that the gameplay is the "only" important thing in a game.
its a mix. part graphics part game play. and one side weighs out more then the other depending on the game.
graphics are more then things looking pretty. graphics are responsible for the 3d world in general. many 3d games without advancements in graphics would never have become, because they just went possible in 2d.
games that use their graphics to draw you into the game would completely suck without those graphics.
graphics help gameplay in a lot more areas then just looking pretty.
that doesnt mean you cant like old games. old games are still great. but remember. without updated graphics many of thoes old games never woulda been either because they'd of looked like pong.
and many games would be just as good today without thier super graphics... as noted on PC where people turn down graphics to get an edge on line by running it smoother and quicker......
but it boggles the mind how some people can be so ignorant as to say graphics mean nothing and gameplay is everything. graphics and gameplay are sometimes one in the same.
