Miraculously, I got a PS3 this morning.
I'm in New Orleans, and my friend and I arrived at one of the few Walmarts in town at 3:00 in the afternoon Thursday. There were tents and a long line, but somehow we got there just in time to be put on the list for the very last PS3 available. That Walmart had 20 PS3s, ten of each version, and we got #20, the last 20GB version. (We're splitting the profits.)
The killer downer is that we stopped at the Rally's right next door to Walmart and took a good half hour to get our food and eat. Turns out if we had been smart and gone to Walmart first, we would have gotten #18 and #19. It was stupid, yes, but it was 3:00 in the afternoon, so we figured we had no chance anyway.
No quarrels, everything went smoothly. The line "mom" was the first lady in line and like five of her and her family got there two nights ago and camped. Since she was a bit older, I think she was able to get in good with the manager. So she knew they had 20 units available, and she kept the informal list of 20 names which the manager used as the official list. That way, everything was kept civil all night.
It got as cold as 42. After Katrina, the Walmarts here aren't yet 24 hours again, so we had to wait until 7:00 a.m. when they opened. But they handed out wristbands around 6:30. I was able to sleep about four hours. Everything worked out nicely. Ebaying it tonight after my drive home to Houston.
YEA BOI
Oh yeah, the title thread is from a good story I heard on another board about the PS2 launch:
PS2 @ Best Buy - 80 people in line, the managers came out at 9am and handed out 50 tickets (store didn't open until 10am). 30 people were left disappointed. Most of those people were still standing around the parking lot as the lucky ones were heading back to their cars after making their purchases. One moron comes out of Best Buy with his PS2 system in a bag and starts jumping up and down and grabbing his crotch yelling, "YEA BOI, YEA BOI I GOTS ME ONE, YEA BOI!!!". The people standing in the parking lot were not amused. They dropped a few F bombs on him, but tried to ignore him for the most part. The guy got in his car and drove right by the crowd, stopped, rolled down his window, and flashed his PS2 to the unlucky people and said, "YEA BOI I SAIDS I GOTS ME ONE". Well this time.. he got his back passenger window kicked out and 3 huge dents on his trunk because his car got gang rushed. So for those of you lucky enough to get a system for launch... just walk to your car, get in, and drive home without acting like a punk or trying to attract attention to yourself.
Oh, the funny thing is, NO ONE in line bought a game with their system. Everyone in line was buying it to eBay. Actually one person was going to keep theirs to play, but someone had their laptop there with internet (somehow) and was checking eBay all night. He said the average going price was $3000, which changed the other guy's mind real quick.
