So, I picked up the long-awaited game yesterday (a week after its release). I was excited to play the game that I had pre-ordered so long ago , as I had read several excellent reviews of the game recently. After playing the game for a couple hours last night, I can see why the game received such praise. The gameplay's not only beautiful, it's fluid. It actually looks less like cel-shading and more like art.

However, the game nearly drove me mad! The "voice-acting" (which is a fake "cute" language similar to Animal Crossing) is absolutely horrific. The story-telling is awful to sit through, and the characters are all asinine, excluding the Wolf.

When I'm in control, the game is great. It moves at a fun pace, it's beautiful... interactive... everything I'd expect for a Zelda clone. But, between scenes I just have to grit my teeth and press X as fast as possible (which doesn't do much, because the dialogue goes at its own slow pace).

I saw a PSM headline that called Okami Playstation's Zelda. I hadn't thought of Okami to be like Zelda before I saw that headline... but, when I played the game last night, I can see what they mean. The game's basically a scanned image of OoT or Twilight Princess that's had a couple runs through Photoshop. It looks nicer, and it's a little different.. but deep down, the fundamentals are the same. In fact, a lot of the character designs seem to be ripped directly from the Zelda series.

Ah well, the gameplay's good, so how can I complain. I'd stick it on mute to ignore the "voices," but then I'd be missing out on the decent music.

For now, the game gets an 8 of 10 for me. It's good, but I was expecting more; maybe the game was just made for a different audience.

Has anyone else played the game? Does anyone actually like the story, characters, and ... "voice-overs"?

I'm about 15 hours into it and I find the story to be quite entertaining. Some of the characters (Susano and Waka in particular) are really great, and once the story really starts to flesh out it becomes very cool to watch. The gameplay is wicked awesome. I guess you could say it's like Zelda...I mean, it's an action adventure title. Amazing visuals, fantastic music, and really creative designs and puzzles. In fact, Okami is the bomb, probably the best game I've played so far this year.
