View Full Version : New season of Survivor to divide tribes by race
According to CBS the new season of Survivor will divide tribes along racial lines. There will be 20 participants divided into four tribes - the white tribe, african-american tribe, asian tribe, and mexican tribe.
Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? Should CBS be commended for taking such an enormous risk or have they completely lost their mind?
Of course the jokes have already started about how the mexicans will win all the swimming challenges, the asians will win all the mental challenges, the whites will move in and set up a housing development, etc.

Its a "good" PR move I'll say that much. Considering I think survivor is slowly losing people, something like this will get people to watch.

I would like to take this time to state my displeasure at the fact you called "white" a race, yet not "black", "yellow", or "tanned".
Either use 'pc' choices for all, or none.
Anyways, I think this is a good idea to get people to watch the show again. It's not like it will really spawn any widespread racism. The most I can see is stereotypical jokes between people who watch the show. But I'll probably check out a few episodes once it starts up to see how it goes.
Their words not mine.
How about the cracker tribe?

How about the cracker tribe?
"Cracker" is derrogatory, so then you'd have to say "nigger", "chink", and "spik."
Continuity, man!

but keep in mind that the tribes will still merge as they always do. So its only racist in the start. :p

I don't suppose critics realize that when a tribe loses... it votes their race off a show, not out of the country.

I can see it now...
Jeff Probst: Well, it seems that that the Mexican tribe has now grown to over 20 people, it seems like their entire families are living with them now...*
I could go on, but this idea is awesome. It's only slightly overshadowed by Fox's incredible Man Vs. Beast programme.
*Jeff Probst is racist.
nice one. I wonder if Jeff is going to refer to them by race, as in "Blacks win immunity!" or "Whites are going to tribal council!"
hrm, interesting.
every survivor season, me and some friends all write down who is going to win survivor (weeks before the show starts, just by looking at thier pictures from the website, nothing else) seal em in an envolope and open it up after the finale. its fun because you tend to totally forget who you wrote down untill you open it up.
(last season i picked the winner correctly! :D )
anywho, this will mix up my way of picking...
and i also wonder how long these teams would actually last, usually its only a matter of a couple episodes before they mix em up or merge a couple.

I haven't watched the latest episode yet but it doesn't make sense that they caved to pressure since all the episodes had already been filmed by the time people got wind of the segregation. They must have decided during filming that it wasn't worth the risk and they should go ahead and merge.

Really, the whole divided by race is still a big issue and will be for at least a while I think as alliances will more likely to be drawn in racial sands. I wish that they would've kept the 4 tribes longer. There was no reason to dissolve them this fast. Oh well, I'll still watch every episode :-).

The spaniards would get their asses handed to them, and then when they did merge, be picked off faster, because there is less of them than the other races.
Assuming they stuck together in racial aspects after merging.

There was a Spaniard tribe? Why would they make a tribe of people all descended from one country, but not for the others?

You're right, each tribe wasn't from one country each. I looked it up, there was an Irish tribe, an Angolan tribe, and a Laotian tribe. :p
My guess is neither you nor Typhoid know many Mexicans and/or latinos. There is a rather large difference between 'Spaniard' and even 'Hispanic'.

Pretty sure you're just looking to stir **** up, or one of your own really lame personal victory.
And there isnt a lot of difference between the terms of hispanic/latino, and spaniard.
Latino/hispanic: Someone who speaks spanish, commonly used for Latin America.
Spaniard: One who lives in, or decended from Spain.

I wouldn't expect Canadians to be experts on the subject, therefore the mistake is perfectly understandable.
You've probably only met a handful of hispanics, anyway. I wouldn't hold the little oops against you.

Yes I need a lame personal victory every once in awhile, I'm petty what can I say. :p
No there is a rather large difference, but it wouldn't seem so from your definitions, which, while pretty close, are still way off. For one, latino does no mean someone who speaks Spanish. And for two, Spaniard means exactly a native or inhabitant of Spain, not descended from. I'm anal or try to be anal about words, I like them to have exact meanings and for people to use them correctly.
And the reason I guessed that you don't have many latino friends because they would have jumped on you before a lot harder than I did for calling them Spaniards. It's like the Canadians I know who get mad when they're referred to as Americans abroad.

So you are as anal as me...
Oh yes, I read that, and your definition was still wrong. A latino/hispanic, as you said before, is not someone who speaks Spanish. Someone who speaks Spanish (if you learned Spanish, would you be a latino? What about Brazilians, are they not latino?) is different from spanish descent. I didn't spell it out it before, because, Jesus, I thought you would have figured it out. :p
And you didn't show the definition for Spaniard so I guess that means you realize your definition was wrong.
So, now that this has dragged on, all my fault of course, back to my original point:
For me at least, when you use 'Spaniards' to refer to people from latin america, it just sounds ignorant because latinos are no where near being Spaniards -- which has a precise meaning of being a native or inhabitant of Spain. If you had even used 'Spanish' instead of 'Spaniard' it wouldn't have sounded so grating, since Spanish at least sounds a lot more ambiguous. Or if you had used 'Mexicans', still not exactly right but a whole lot closer.

I didnt mean someone who spoke spanish, in any aspect is a spainiard.
I dont even know how this conversation has gone on as long as it has.
I simply meant "the spanish speaking tribe".
As I stated early on, way down there.
It does not mean I think everyone who speaks spanish is a spainiard.
It doesnt mean I didnt know what a spainiard was.
It doesnt mean anything you're making it out to be.
It simply means 2 things.
That 1: I couldnt think of the name of the tribe and 2: I thought someone would understand what I meant, without having an adverse effect to sand in their vagina.
