You can stop gawking at me. Yes, I'm Xantar. And yes, I'm making a thread about a PS2 game. I'm just kind of curious to know if any of you have picked this game up and played it yet.

I should say that I wasn't an enormous fan of FF VII. I thought it was all right, but I don't join in all the other fanboys in declaring it the best game ever made. I don't even think it's the best RPG ever made (I personally favor FF VI or Tales of Phantasia). But anyway, setting all that aside, one of my housemates picked up Dirge of Cerberus today. And I have to say I'm rather disappointed. It kind of sucks. The environments are rather bland which is shocking because this is Final Fantasy VII we're talking about. But instead of the imaginative mega-cityscapes from the original game, we've got Vincent wandering through...warehouses, offices and sewers. And it doesn't help that the running and shooting is pretty bland, too. It's hard to put my finger on, but I think it's because the controls aren't tight and there's no sense of oomph when you shoot someone. They just have a number pop out of them and then collapse. That's ok for an RPG. It's not acceptable for a shooter.

I'll stop now before I rant too long. But if you ask me, I'd say rent this game. If you're hoping for Final Fantasy VII fan service, you're mostly going to be disappointed. Reeve is the only other original character who seems to have significant presence. The CGI scenes are pretty nice to look at, but there aren't many of them. And I guess you might be excited at seeing Vincent's coffin. Other than that, I just don't know how you could justify spending $40 on it.

PSM gave Dirge a terrible rating: 5.5 out of 10

Other games that should be bought this month are Final Fantasy XII and Okami. Both got rated 9.5.

It's a rental at best. Cool for FFVII fans who want see more of the story and stuff, but yeah it isn't too great. Granted, they made a number of changes for the US version that set it way, way above the aboslutely god awful Japanese version, but from a company that makes million dollar blockbusters and is known throughout the world as one of the biggest video game developers, this game sure does lack quality.

And I don't know why the hell PSM reviewed FFXII this month when it isn't due out in stores until October 31. Getting a little ahead of themselves methinks.

Oh and everyone buy Okami in September. Doooooo it.

It's terrible! But you just know all those millions of FF7 fans are going to buy it mindlessly because of the damn name. Sigh.
