CVG: What are your impressions of Nintendo Wii and how did Snake appear in Smash Brothers?

Kojima: I’ve played Tennis, Zelda and Mario on Wii. I find Tennis very interesting. I played the early version but the E3 version is far more advanced. As a game designer, I’m very interested in creating something for the Wii. I’d like to run away from MGS 4 creation and create something for the Wii but unfortunately, I don’t have anything that I can announce at the moment. I have lots of ideas for Wii but I have a heavy schedule with MGS 4 and Metal Gear Online. Concerning Snake’s appearance on Wii in Smash Brothers, I’m friends with the designer of the game and I thought it would be nice if you could play as Snake - when I heard about the new game last year, I contacted the designer and we started working together.

That is incredibly awesome. First hand testimony that developers want to make things for the Wii, opposed to being turned off by it's awkward setup in reference to the 360 and PS3.

If this is an early indication that developers are excited to jump on the Wii-wagon then Nintendo is in good shape. It’ll be interesting to see how multiplatform titles shape out with the wii/ps3/360.

It's a really good sign when people want to forget about MGS4 and develop for Wii instead. Score!

Wow.. "Run away from MGS4" Those are strong words. I wonder if he really means it..?

It just most likely gets tedious after a while. A simple Wii game would probably be a nice change of pace for him.

Well he did play Pokemon Crystal during the entire development of MGS2.

I don't blame him. I bet it's the same with creators of Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, etc. You just end up getting tired of working on the same thing over and over. I think we need new projects from developers. I mean, look at Square during E3. Final Fantasy XIII! THREE VERSIONS! Woo!

It's pathetic. I understand it's how they make their money, but still. I'd be driven crazy.

If you were practically forced by fans and company executives to make the same type of game for the past 10 years, you'd probably want to do something else too.

I doubt there will be much port games for the Wii. There will be but developers don't want to take extra time to make it Wii "compatible" and just half ass release a port.

The comment from Hideo is interesting. We'll have to see how it pans out. Hopefully it isn't something too odd, like that Sun game for the GBA.

I'm not surprised at what he Kojima said at all........ I don't believe this is the first time he's talked about getting away from the MGS series.

This guy is a developer/game designer, he'll want to express his creative in new ways and that can be fairly hard to do when you have to work with one franchise all of the time. Yes you can create new things within the franchise but some basic things must remain in order for metal gear to feel like metal gear.

Also he can say he wants to run away and create something new for the Wii but unless the big boys at the top see that making such a game is profitable then he won't be making any game for the Wii anytime soon.

Pardon me for thinking a little too much into this but could it be possible Kojima wants to run away from MGS4 and wants to create something for the Wii called Metal Gear Wii utilizing the controller of the Wii.

I mean if he was so tired of the same franchise why would he boast playing as Snake in Super Smash Bro Brawl? I don't believe he's tired of the MGS franchise one bit, his story telling gets so much more compelling with each installment of MGS and I believe it inspires him to write.

What I think he means in this statement is he wants to run away from MGS4... particularly and possibly make a MGS for the Wii to take advantage of the Wiimote.

I dunno. He was also the producer behind that quirky sun series Boktai. (So glad the DS version won't use this...being the nocturnal sun fearing creature that I am.) And I remember reading about some crazy idea he had for a DS game a while back. And Snake being in SSB...while I haven't played much MGS...Snake is just a cool cat...doubley cool when mixed with comedy.

He was the director/writer or producer of 16 Metal Gear games. That's just insane.

Well that could also be a possibilty. Although I like my possiblity better. Besides I wouldn't mind seeing a new game from Kojima on Wii, Ps3 or Xbox360.
