View Full Version : Revolution's New name Revealed

Get ready for it..

The Nintendo Wii (as in We)

I really don't know what to think of that at the moment..

Revolution sure as hell was better

Introducing... Wii.
As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents teh answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their gams... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," wehich emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

"we just pissed off 100 million people"

"we shouldn't let EA makes games, because they are gimmicky crap"

When it launches, and you see two of these new consoles on the shelf, would they be called the Nintendo Wii Wii?

And if it launches in the Apple-white in Japan, but launches in the black for the U.S., would it be called the Wiicked Wii of the West?

Because.... it's black... and two iis...... :sneaky:

So, they wanted to make the name something that would repesent simplicity? Something that anyone and everyone could easily understand? So they called it Wii? A absolutely idiotic name that requires a thorough explanation?

I think "Revolution" was pretty straightforward.

Dyne
04-27-2006, 01:00 PM
Wait, why am I getting upset over here. This is just the national progression of things. Also, it looks like a ploy to get the word out on the system. Then they'll release a real name, a good name, a la the Ultra 64 or Starcube debacles.

Brilliant.

..I hope.

The name makes a "we" sound to repesent togetherness. But what about other languages where "we" doesnt mean jack all? People around the world are going to be wondering what the hell is going on. It'll create global chaos, turning father against son, and man against machine. What remains in the aftermath of the destruction could only be described as revolutionary, to begin anew... holy sh*t I think I just got it.

Haha nice, Crash. Did you make those yourself?

The name is a name, I personally don't care what it is, but I do hope it isn't a detriment to getting it out to the masses.

I do, however, like to make fun of it. I think, perhaps, that all the uproar over the name change (see IGN boards and others) is at least getting the word out about it. Perhaps having such a distinct, easy-to-make-fun-of name will be a good thing in the end, a la there is no such thing as bad publicity. Of course, that saying is not always true.

Kaplan responds.

So why announce the name now and not at the show?

By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it's like to play the games begin to come in.

thatmariolover
04-27-2006, 02:34 PM
It's possible they'll change it, but I doubt it. Most of you will probably remember that the Gamecube was called the "StarCube" for about a week. But the uproar they met from forum-goers and the media persuaded Nintendo to change the name to Gamecube.

But by the same token, no matter how much people hate the name, they'll eventually just fall back on calling it a "Nintendo". And honestly I don't think that's such a bad thing.

Well, I don't know what to think after mulling it over.

On one hand.. its Wii

But on the other hand check out IGN, 1up, game forums or whatever you want to do.. top story is Wii...

Why because it got people talking.

I mean blogs from editors from several sites lead back to the Wii story or even more Wii info.

Wii is quickly becoming a household word just because no one can stop talking about it. And for some strange reason that works, I think.

And apparently the name is Wii and not Nintendo Wii which is weird but could work.

On a serious note, I think it's a good idea what they've done with the name, and the logo. I mean it will question a lot of peoples curiosity why it's called "Wii" and the logo / marketing I'm sure will revolve around the controller and human interaction.

Unusual name (intending to be "We" for everybody) combined with a logo and marketing campaign that will showcase the revolutionary side of the console should sit well with the public I imagine.

honestly i dont know where everyone is getting it's a simpler name then 360 or PS3. besides, sony's franchise was built on the name Playstation... and thats friendly in itself. Just like movies going by sequels and numbers it signifies a newer generation/version. Please don't bag on other system names just because Wii is pissing you off :)

Wii is alright I guess, I mean, people will probably just grow out of it and call is Rev anyway since it's been revolution for such a long time.

I honestly thought it was the hugest typographical error and Nintendo was naming their console after Wifi....

I'd say it's about as stupid sounding as Windows ME.

I mean, it's called Win ME for crying out loud. But most people didn't seem to care anyway.

Maybe, just maybe, you guys should consider the fact that you don't represent the mainstream population? And maybe you don't even represent the people Nintendo is trying to market this to?

I know it's hard, but it's just a thought.

sooo... you're comparing it to the most unpopular version of windows they ever made? interesting. (not saying it sold the worst, but it was obviously the one people in general hated the most) and i remember its name took a lot of raggin on too.

i like the name, its fun. and stands out. i dont think it'll be much of a problem. no need to defend everything nintendo does with ones life. its just a name. and i think xantars right, nintendos not marketing this towards its fans and customers like all the nintendo fans on this forum or others.... its marketing it towards all the wee little people in the world. :)

I know this will just be tossed aside, because hell, who takes anything I say and actually reads it.

But the Revolution (I'm so not using the new name until its released) controller is too kitcsh-y for me.

Nintendo has always tried to change the market, and it hasnt gone so well.

They wanted to be the first to use discs, and in return, created their number one competator.
They made the Superscope, and we all know how widely those type of things are used in next-gen systems.
They made the power glove, and hell, every system wants a power glove add-on now.
They had a DDR-esque mat you can use, instead of a controller. And now every system is jumping on that bandwagon, arent they?
The Super Gameboy? "Yeah, lets make an add-on cartridge where kids can play 8-bit games on a 16-bit system." And someone along the line shouted "BRILLIANT!"

I just think the Nintendo Revolution will be awkward, and kitcshy, and only the fanboys will love it and be all "Omg teh nintendo is teh awesome, YAY CONTROLLER!"

But I see it as highly non-practical. Yes, it would be good for shooter games. But is Nintendo only looking to corner the 80's arcade style market?

I dont see a bunch of 6 year old kids crammed into a bedroom all flinging their arms around wildly and frequently to throw a baseball, and hit the ball, then run to get it, and throw it to a base, while another kid flings his arm to slide into 3rd, while the other kid whips his arm to throw the ball, as a good thing.

I see it as completely bad for any sports, or racing game. It's an excellent idea for arcade games, because it caters directly to that.

Also, how many kids will be able to enjoy hours upon hours of endless funm with games they love, when their arms get tired?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea. Because it's good for certain styles of games.

But it's one of those "We're Nintendo, and we need to revolutionize the market" risks that they take every so often, that havent seemed to do so good for them.

Actually wait, they've done excellent. Every system wants a Controller pad, Superscope, and powerglove.

I just see this as really kitsch, like I said. To me, this would be like Sony implimenting the Dance Pad for every game for the PS3. It's new, it's edgy, it's never been done.

In response to previous post on previous page:

Er, they made first use of the D-pad, shoulder buttons, the best wireless controller to date, began and dominated portable gaming, and continued with the monsteriously successful DS which everyone ratted on for being a gimick.

They try out all gaming possibilites. Some work, and some don't. I see this as one of the former...but only time will time.

i wouldnt say the DS is doing 'monsteriously' seccessfull by any stretch of the imagination. its doing well. had its ups and downs and is picking up more and more. but monsteriously? come on now. lol

and the DS itself wasnt what people called a gimmick, it was one feature of it. which was being just that untill they stoped trying to force the feature into every little bit. once they relaxed a bit and used it just for what it would help with, it became a much more usefull feature.

note, i didnt read back to know what your responce is to, so im not taking sides on any of what you already said. :p

By monstrous I obviously was referring to the little gremlins that reside in each system increasing their likelihood for a synchronized take over of the human race.

But has been the top selling system in Japan for quite a whiles now. Not sure about the rest of the world. Based on everyone's first impressions of it, it's doing a hell of a lot better than predicted. Even Nintendo wasn't sure how it would do marketing it as a third tier. I'm just hoping Nintendo isn't being to cocky now with Rev (dammit, Wii I mean...wonder how long till I get used to it) now that the DS has been embraced so well.

I think Nintendo should have let me name it considering I have a pathological obsession with names. But first I would need a list of materials in the machine, the name of the designer, the name of his pets, the dimensions of every angle and crevice, the exact color of white the system is, the voltage, the time the concept was conceived regarding the controller, etc. and I'd come up with a catchy name with something to back it up with.

And now real people speak out about Wii:

Female, aged 30. From Hong Kong.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: "Wee" (got it first time)

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A urinal? Candy? It's kind of trendy, kind of modern. Maybe a trendy urinal? Maybe a sporting goods product? Maybe something that goes fast, like rollerblades? Probably a product for little kid because it's simple and very simplistic.

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Games are supposed to be complicated. I wouldn't have guessed that.

Male student, aged 19. Savvy gamer from Derby, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Why? or Wee?

Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Possibly a shower gel or some type of cleaning product.

Q: It's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console.
A: Yeah? But that name doesn't sound anything like a games console!

Female student, aged 19. Casual gamer from Sheffield, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Weeeeeee!

Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Chocolate.

Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Hmmm, I think it'd sound good as a chocolate bar.

Female student, aged 18. Non-gamer from near Coventry, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.

Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Nothing. It doesn't sound like a product of any kind.

Q: What would you say if it's the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Oh right, well it sounds a little silly.

Female student, aged 18. Non-gamer from London, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: The same way you'd say why.

Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: A no-name car audio CD player.

Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Wiierd.

Male student, 18. Savvy gamer from Norfolk, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.

Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: A product you say? A physical product, hint hint? Seriously, probably something to do with Wikipedia or some kind of athletics gear.

Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Grrreat! [pronounced in a heavily sarcastic manner]

Male student, 19. Casual gamer from Lincoln, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: Japanese? It sounds small, maybe a gadget.

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Yeah, that makes sense. It doesn't surprise me.

Male student, 19. Casual gamer from Birmingham, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Like why.

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: World War II, the name "will".

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: That's logical, but I think the two letter "i"s make it seem like it's roman numerals.

Female student, 19. Non-gamer from Hull, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A cleaning thing.

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Actually, yeah! That makes sense.

Female student, 19. Non-gamer from London, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A cleaning agent.

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Uh, it sounds "wampy". Stupid.

Male student, 19. Savvy gamer from Lincoln, UK.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Like why, I think.

Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: It sounds like a Chinese name or some sort of code.

Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: I'd associate it with Wifi or a video game, not a console.

From a retailer's point of view, I have to say the name DOES endanger sales. I can't imagine the pain in the neck it will be to explain how to pronounce "Wii" to parents buying a console, and the sheer confusion in saying things like "Do we have any more Wiis?" and "Nintendo is shipping 30 Wiis to our store next week."

Also, the parents will be inundated with "I wanna Wii! Mommy, I wanna Wii!" and they'll have to have the whole thing explained- No, your kid's not asking to use the bathroom. They're actually begging for a new video game system.

And think of the names of games. If there was Castlevania, Super Castlevania, Castlevania 64, and Castlevania DS, then we're sure to get "Castlevania Wii" along with "Mario Wii" and "Super Smash Bros. Wii"
.

Jeff Dahmer? Who doesn't know that guy? After all, he was a notorious serial killer and cannibal.

It's taken a couple days but I think I'm starting to warm up to the name.

I've seen that before, and it's starting to grow on me. I can't believe he never cracks a smile, he says everything completely deadpan. Or maybe he's entirely serious, so it's not really deadpan. It's just him.

It's weird, for a second or two he seems high, or perhaps even drunk. But then it goes away. And he says all these semi-coherent sentences without every breaking character. I just can't describe it...

I guess a good way to put it is, I think he's either a comedic genius -- or just bordering retarded.

That seems to describe a lot of comedians, now that I say it.

That was pretty lame, but I actually chuckled when he said, ""Get your face in there, you bastard. Yes!"

Drugs don't make you retarded, just distant and maybe more "on" to sensations.

Alcohol....different story. Especially large amounts.

I did have the courtesy to google it, and I must say, it's a brilliant thing. And I did laugh.

IGN Says:

IGN Wii: Some overzealous readers have created some truly phallic Wii designs. We e-mailed you several of them, as you saw. Any plans to use any of these brilliant materials in your official marketing plans?

Perrin Kaplan: What a nice way of asking that question! We actually have had a day of a lot of smiles around here with a variety of things that fans have created, let me just say that. It shows you that people are big fans of Nintendo.

Think it anything to do with a couple of my designs? LOL

I don't think you ever answered, Crash. So those were your original designs? If so, yeah, in the week in review they posted last Friday I think, they showed two Wii designs and only two. One was your hanging one and the other was your WTF!! one. I can only assume he sent her all three.
