okay, well i've gotten pretty far in the game over the past 2 days, from chapter 1-2 to chapter 2-3.

and I got to the part where you have to choose between 2 paths, I read the document in that little shack by the merchant, and it said there was going to be Ganados? and an El Gigante.

and I want a tip on which route i should pick.

and there will be more help needed later on...

DeathsHand

Help on which route to pick? C'mon, just pick one... It's part of the fun...

Are you in the mood to fight a bunch of crazy people, or would you rather deal with some cave trolls?
The choices are your's and your's alone... Good luck...

Krypton

well being that it took me about 5 tries to fend off those people with that Luis guy, it wont be TOO much fun.

Dyne

Go left. I tried time and time again to fight that El Gigante but I couldn't figure out how.

Besides, you'll probably get more out of going left instead of money.

I went the El Gigante way first...with barely any ammo. Took me a couple trys to kill him. I ended up going back the other way after to pick stuff up. :)

I found it incredibly easy to kill the El Gigante, i've already faced it once and wasnt that hard, but that's probably because I had about 4 first aid sprays, and well over enough ammo.

how many chapters are there exactly in this game? it doesnt even feel like ive even grazed the surface.

The right way is a bitch because you have to face the El Gigante in a narrow corridor.

And yeah, there's six chapters. The game takes about 14-16 hours.

I think I might remember mentioning how you killed it, but would you refresh us all as to how?

Does it have to do with it falling over and tentacles popping out of it's head screaming out "Weak spot!", then running up to it, pressing A, and hacking away at it?

2-3 times and it's dead...

Though maybe not, on account'a I thought that was the obvious simple way to kill the thing...

Krypton

with the shotgun/tmp, it'll be so much easier to kill, because the guns can do quicker damage, and if you can get some headshots with the .233 rifle, that's also a good strategy.

those 2 chainsaw ladies are a bitch.

i find that the Red9 is a pretty good weapon to use against villagers/bosses.

but in the beginning when you face that huge ass fish in the lake, that might have been one of the easiest boss battles in a game i've ever played.

Question: is there an option to turn the gore off? On the GCN? The more I read about this game, the more I want to play it, but it's just too violent for my taste.

I had the same problem when you first begin to leave the farm village I think it is, you begin to walk down a wooden staircase and those damn villagers push a huge boulder and you have to run away, at first it was tap X, so I was taping X, then I died, then I began tapping X before I even had to, and realized it was square.

I hate that.

and i bought that gun called the Punisher, was that a good or crappy buy?

Xantar
02-03-2006, 11:53 PM
You bought the Punisher? That's a gun you get for free if you shoot 10 blue medallions. Or was that little mini-quest only in the GameCube version?

Anyway, the Punisher is not a terrible gun compared to the original handgun, but it's also not much better at all. The only real advantage it has is the ability to shoot two people who are lined up, but in practice that's not worth much at all because enemies very rarely line up like that (and when they do, there's usually five of them in which case you should be using something other than a handgun anyway). Besides that, by this point your original handgun is probably upgraded enough to be quite deadly on its own.

By the way, did you notice those boulders hanging pointlessly up on the edge of the canyon in the second El Gigante fight?

Swan

Wrong, it's in the Gamecube version, and it's 15 if I remember correctly.

I also noticed the boulder but when I used it, it didn't instant-kill him. Wasn't good enough for me. I wanted more ammo so I went left.

It's 10 to get the Punisher. If you shoot 15, you get the Punisher upgraded to level 2.

And there are two boulders on the right path. You drop one on him, jump up and swing your knife like mad, then run to the door and break it down and get to the next boulder where you repeat the process. Hopefully, you've been pressing the button fast enough to kill him at this point.

What I did: went on the left path, killed the villagers and the chainsaw maniacs, went all the way through, got to the merchant and upgraded my weapons and then went back and flipped the switch so I could go through the right path.

There isn't a really easy way to beat Bitores Mendez. All I can give you is a few tips:

1. There's an explosive barrel. Use it.

2. If you have grenades, use them all up now (except for flash grenades). You'll get plenty later on since this is still fairly early in the game. And Bitores Mendez is really the last boss where grenades will be useful.

3. Use the shotgun. If you don't have many shells, then blast him in his walking form with the handgun and then after he transforms, use the shotgun so you don't have to aim with pinpoint accuracy when he's jumping around.

4. Stay about two steps away from a ladder. When Mendez gets too close, climb up and run around to the other side of the room and then jump back down. It's very important that you get back down as soon as possible because otherwise he'll rear up and knock you down which hurts. But if you're fast, you can keep shooting him, run up and around to the other side when he gets too close and then blast him again until he gets too close at which point you can climb up and run again etc.

5. Try not to imagine that there are even harder bosses on the way. Or that this games has a "Professional" mode in which Mendez will kill you in three hits.

Uhh...not to put too fine a point on it, but that was stupid. Really stupid. If you have a previous save file where you have those weapons, you should go back to it. Otherwise, you'll need to go buy a handgun and shotgun again.

The Broken Butterfly is not only slow shooting, its ammo is also really scarce. Besides, you can also get it later on for free...

You need a shotgun and a handgun. The Broken Butterfly and rifle simply aren't going to be able to handle crowds (besides having scarce ammo). They can't handle fast-moving enemies (and you will be facing plenty later on). Go back and get your stuff back now. If you have to sell your magnum to do it, then sell the magnum. The rifle is actually pretty useful, but the magnum's ammo is so scarce that you will basically have enough to kill the bosses you meet and not much more.

You see a scary monster in a cage and don't even try simply walking up to it (or perhaps the switch next to it), and think you're stuck? *scratches head*

You kick the door in, walk up to him, and he flips out... But he doesn't lunge right for you, so you turn around, get some distance and then fight...

Or better yet, kick the door down, back up into the cage and run forward as soon as you hear "*CLANK* ERRRUUGHHHH!!" or anything similar.

The riot gun fires and reloads faster and holds more shells but is slightly weaker than the standard shotgun. Still, I much prefer the riot gun because the tradeoff in firepower really doesn't matter that much. You'll be killing most things with two or three blasts with either shotgun, and so the riot gun's higher speed becomes useful.

There's also one more shotgun later on that's more powerful, aims faster, holds more shells and reloads faster. However, I personally think it's too expensive to be worthwhile, particularly when you should be upgrading your Broken Butterfly. The riot gun will be just fine for the rest of the game as long as you keep it reasonably upgraded.
