How big is the chance of an alien lifeform to look human? To even be material?

Well taking into account evolution, we evolved in a way that best fit our need to use tools.

It's not incoceivable that other tool using creatures could evolve in a similar way.

Utterly crap.

And who says alien lifeform will have comparible technology? In 500 years, humans probably won't move anymore at all, they'll just be plugged in a computer all day and let robots do the work. Anyway, what I mean: why do you think aliens would come to our world physicly?

I believe in some powers, just not 'alien' as from another planet.

Anyway, what I mean: why do you think aliens would come to our world physicly?

Well I'm not sure, why would we send people to the moon? Or Mars? Or anywhere outside of earth?

I don't believe in crappy reported alien sightings like this, but it just seems extremely unlikely to me that, out of the bazillion planets in the universe, Earth is the only one with life on it...

We're "intelligent", they could be "intelligent"... We evolved this way, they could have evolved this way (or at least in a similar way)...
If you could compare humans and this theoretical intelligent alien race, they could be less advanced, they could be more advanced...

For all we know, on some crazy extremely far away planet (impossible to reach, unless some mystical magical form of travel is invented), there could be some race exploring their planet's moons or other nearby planets, wondering if there is life out there, speculating that "Any life we find will probably be no more than puny, inferior beings!"...

As for why any potential alien race that has the ability to somehow get to us would actually come down here physically... Eh, who knows? But I mean, if we, as humans, located a planet with other living, apparently "intelligent" beings on it, and somehow had a way to get there (that didn't involve immortality and a very long sleep), would we not eventually go down there physically? I mean, after sending unmanned things, trying to communicate with signals, etc etc...

*shrug*

That's basically my theory on everything related to life on other planets... Based around "Ok, so what makes you think we're so special?"...

I mean, after sending unmanned things, trying to communicate with signals, etc etc... So they come down here and let them be caught on film? (I know you already said you didn't believe this story though.)

I could believe that alien life visits Earth, I just won't believe they look anything like us.

So they come down here and let them be caught on film?

*shrug*... Who's to say they'd even recognize what it is?

Someone happened to have a video camera, happened to already be filming, happened to notice something was wrong, and happened to look up just in time to record the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center on 9/11...

To name the most notable "right place, right time" video capture I can think of...

Caught on film / be recognized on film.... whatever.

I actually do like Spielberg's Taken. :)

Err, I meant who's to say the alien would recognize what the video camera was, it's purpose, etc etc... It wouldn't "let itself" be captured on film, but it wouldn't "not let itself" be captured on film either...

If it was captured on film, it would be because someone with a video camera happened to cross paths with it, and was able to get it out and turned on before it like... Ran away or... Bit their head off or something...

And if it was captured on film, it might not even realize it...

Ok ok you got your point I guess. Alien life would posibly not understand our world, running around like idiots. Somehow I have to take a look at your avatar now. :)

But it has nothing to do with my original point, that chances are practically zero that aliens would look like us. Unless they got the ability to change form or project things.

Just on this whole alien note, I want to say that, while I dont believe it, it could be true.

Aliens would most likely look like us, if they were carbon based. Because we're evolved to be (like Dylflon said) best suited for the environment and all that jazz. Now, the chance is, if carbon based, their environment would partially resemble ours. So while they could have Wharf-like ridges on their faces, they would most likely have foreward set eyes, opposable thumbs, ears and a nose.

Also, in response to Canyarion, they would come here to study people. If anything. They dont know they're being caught on film, if thats the case. Much like sometimes someone can take a picture of you and you wouldnt know they are.

And to all the people who say "well why do aliens only go to farms?"

Let me put it this way. If we had the technology, and wanted to study another planet. Would we drop our recon team to a heavily life infested area, or a rural area where we can study plantlife from a safe distance from a freak out of the alien life masses?

But like I said, I think the whole alien jazz is bollox.

Well there's no proof that was an alien. Could be some mutant of some sort. It's not like they saw it take off in a ship to classify it as an alien.

About coming to our planet: there is a theory that the greys are actually humans from the far distant future.

what do you mean when you say 'look like us' ?

do you mean look like us as in they could walk amoung us without being noticed? or do you mean the basic characteristics?

i think its very obvious that there is many other types of life out there, i think it would be absolutly silly to think the entire universe is empty besides us.
as to what aliens look like... it would also be silly to think we look like this, and every type of alien out there i looks the same but nothing like us. They'd all look different, they woulda evolved thier own way based on thier planet. So i've always thought of it the way Typhoid has said..

Lets say thier planet is all water, im sure theres an advanced (evolved) type of alien species out there that lives and breaths under water.
And theres other that have evolved breathing a different type of air, and all kinds of different things coulda happened during thier evolution.

Now what you gotta think is, the kind of alien that would visit our planet phisically would most likely have evolved similarly... so i'd say the chances of a alien (if ever visted here phisically) looking 'huminoid' (arms, legs, hands, eyes, maybe in much different perportions) are actually not too bad.

I still think it would be higly unlikely, but perhaps that's because I recently read Michael Crichton's Sphere.

Why would an alien have 2 arms? Why not 4, why not 40? I wanted to ask why it would have 2 eyes, but that's because stereoscopocy I guess... though 1 large eye would do the same trick.
But still, why would alien lifeforms even have eyes? Perhaps they wouldn't be using the same spectrum we do... And again I say, perhaps they wouldn't even live in our 3 dimensions.

yes but it sounds like your saying theres only one kinda alien out there.. i'd say theres tons. and ones as you speak of that dont use the same spectrum or didnt live in the '3 demension' the way we do... Would they be the the ones most likely to visit earth? or would it be more likely that a species out there that evolved on a simular planet be the ones that visit?

im sure there are things out there that we cant even imagine, but you gotta think that ones that would phisically visit earth would be somewhat more likely to of evolved simularly then what your saying.

about the 2 eyes, i had read before about why creatures have 2 eyes, doesnt it give you depth perception or something? which is why animals and people and even fish alike all have 2 eyes. but they could have 1 or 3 or none.

and even if a alien had 4 arms, i'd still say its humanoid. it would still be simular, i dont think an alien is going to look exactly like us.
but you keep saying why would 'an' alien have 2 arms and not 40 and things, but why do you say an alien? maybe there are some out there with 40 maybe with 2, maybe with none, i think theres gotta be countless ways to have evolved into an intelligent life form out there.

its even possible to me to think that maybe out there theres a planet that the beings evolved exactly the same and look so much like us that we couldnt tell the difference.

But none of us could ever answer these things anyway, but its interesting to see how other people think :)

And as we all know from scifi shows and movies that everyone in the universe already speaks english :P

Sure, there could be some life that looks like us, of course. But I'm relating this all to the 'alien encounters' that people believe in. What are the odds for that? But I guess you don't believe that either, so we're cool. ;)

Same thing goes for evolution. The odds for accidental creation of life are so extremely small, that a lot of scientists agree it couldn't have happened.
I'm not participating in that 'intelligent design' stuff, though they agree with me. :)

Null
01-20-2006, 01:13 PM
but see are odds really predictable for anything of that nature when we dont/cant even understand the size of the universe or the universe itself? :)

i dont really understand your question about peoples sightings? are you asking what are the odds that they look the same or what are the odds that people actually see them or what?

What i kinda do is relate to us.... if we as a people were to find other planets with 'intelligant' life, and say one planet has life with a form of gas we cant breath or is toxic to us, and one planet is all life is underwater, and one planet is a species that looks like monsters to us... and one is a planet that resembles ours and has life similar to ours, Which would we phiscally visit?
