I just watched A Clockwork Orange, one of the few Kubrick movies I have yet to see, and needless to say...it was probably one of the best movies I have seen, ever.

I can't decide what is sadder, the fact that A Clockwork Orange has more value as a movie than anything released in the last few years, or the fact that the movie has more nuts than any movie released in the last few years.

Rape, with full nudity - check
Tarantino worthy dialogue - check
Old school movie feel that only Kubrick can convey - check

1971, rated X when it came out, pulled from theaters early, banned from many countries worldwide. Kubrick recieved death threats because of this movie, and had it not been for his establishing work "Dr. Strangelove," he might not have released any more movies.

The first half is a bit hard to stomach, even in my desensitized opinion, but the movie comes together flawlessly after the halfway mark. Nothing is unnecessary. There are no wasted scenes, characters, or graphic depictions.

I dunno...i just felt like saying I like this movie and I'm gonna watch it again. It's kinda long, and it's definitely riské...haha...borderline softcore porn, tarantino-witty dialogue, hollywood should be ashamed at the self-censoring that goes on these days.

But the story is amazing, I love the plot. And even though the main character is a huge bastard, by the end of the movie, you might have mixed feelings.

I read the book a number of years ago but only saw the movie sometime this past year. Quite good. When I read the book had a complete list of the meanings of all the slang on hand. And now the beginning of CFBD makes more sense. I was expecting much worse during the forced video scene from how it was described in the book.

Decided to see the movie after watching Malcolm McDowell in Caligola. Now that is a three hour porn...I watched that in art history no less...man that was uncomfortable.

Kubrick also released 2001: A Space Odyssey before A Clockwork Orange, so he had some mojo working for him there, too. 2001 is arguably the best film ever made, and it cemented his legacy. I loved Clockwork, but I don't think its his best film. Its a bit hammy at times, but it nails the sociopathy to a tee when it needs to.

My favorite Kubrick works are as follows:

5) Full Metal Jacket
4) A Clockwork Orange
3) The Shining
2) Dr. Strangelove
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey (which oddly had very little to do with outer space)

BTW, if they're playing Culigula in your art history class, its time to find a new art history class. Its a horrible movie that simply exploits the history for visceral, sophomoric pleasure. It was made by the publisher of Penthouse, for Christ's sake.

Just bought the Kubrick collection on DVD the other day actually.
