Rumor Control: PlayStation 3 @ $299!?

EDIT: As you know this thread had misleading info about PlayStation 3 going up for $299. But I was enlightened today when I visited my friend again. He had been putting out a sign up list so that you can be notified when the PS3 would go up for pre-orders. He told me that PlayStation 3 pre-orders begin sometime in mid-January, bringing to mind whether or not it will be releasing Spring or Summer. In either case, the rumor of it releasing world-wide is still undecided.

The rumor of the PS3's price. My friend confirmed.. The $299 price he saw was in fact for a PS3 HDD which was "400GB HDD 2.5" PlayStation 3."

When he checked the list again the PlayStation 3 had this

"Sony PlayStation 3 Console - TBD [$349-$499]"

That rumor ? Bogus... however we do have a price range from $350 to $500.... ehhh...

If they want to spite MS and not care about profit, then yeah, they'll do that to toy with MS.

$299 sounds a tad bit unlikely to me, but that would be a swell price... People always flip out about price no matter what though...
They complained about PS2's price point and acted like it was going to be the death of it, despite the fact that it cost the same as PS1 at launch...

Then of course PSP, crazy people speculating that it was going to cost like $500 bucks and insane numbers like that... It launches at $250...

Now PS3 and people are like ZOMG $500!!

I would laugh if it launched at $299... But again, I'll be a tad conservative and say I think a $399 launch is more likely...

a loss on systems doesnt always mean a loss over all. getting that userbase large, losing money on the consoles, can be made up for.

I really dont see how it could possibly be lower than $349...my guess is still $399

$299 is extremely ballsy, I can tell you that much. Perhaps the shock value would be worth the loss in profits for them. $299 seems as unlikely as a spring US launch. No, I think summer for Japan and fall for US with a $399 price point.

perhaps my friends meant that pre-orders would start in Spring? I dunno, I'm going to the mall today to go shopping and one of my friends is working.. I'm going to clarify one thing or another.
