"This awesome, high-tech first-person shooter champions the Xbox 360 with its excellent assortment of single- and multiplayer game types, as well as its incredible good looks and dynamic, intense action."

"Taken as a whole, Perfect Dark Zero is decidedly one of the best, fully featured Xbox 360 games so far, and it's a compelling reason to spring for the system if you've been on the fence. While the game doesn't reinvent the first-person shooter, which has been a mainstay of action gaming for more than a decade, it delivers one of the most highly refined and spectacular examples of this brand of gameplay to date. From its ravishing good looks and totally first-rate audio, to the believable feel of its outstanding weapons, to its wealth of single- and multiplayer options, Perfect Dark Zero delivers just about everything you could hope for from a first-person shooter."

I've never played it, and highly doubt I ever will.

But I've always thought this game would be good.

And even if it isnt good, the first games released for a new system usually are the worst gameplay and graphics wise anyways.

But I think the game would be good, so meh.

...not like I played PD or Goldeneye for N64 either...though hear they were good...actually besides Conker (which I liked) and Banjo-Tooie (which I didn't) I haven't played any other Rare games. Just know their GCN run was poor.

Lets go back in the past to some of the aforementioned naysayers who were again proven wrong:

Dyne: "I admit I'm interested in it but I just don't think it'll have the polish rare's previous works had."

GameMaster: "I'd say this is the final nail in the coffin for Rare."

gekko: "Can it get any worse?"

Jonbo: "Poor Rare...what happened to you"

Canyarion: "What's Rare again?"

Jason1: "Rare obviously went downhill since leaving nintendo."

bobcat: "Rare?

Who's that again?"

Link1130: "I personally can't help but see Perfect Dark Zero becoming anything more than a letdown."

Null: "i'd be willing to bet money it will be a let down."

Yea, maybe I jumped the boat a little too early so to speak...I mean...did they release ANYTHING worth a **** on Xbox? And how long did they have with the system?

Not to mention, just how long was PD0 in development for? 5 years? It might not have been quite that long, but I'll bet its damn close. When a game is in development that long, if its not good, then there is something seriously wrong with the people making the game, and I dont care that it started as a gamecube project.

Anywho, we all knew Rare is a very talented development house, so this dosent really suprise me. But looking back at what they accomplished on Xbox, I dont think any of our comments were un-justified.

Considering Rare's track record starting from SFA to the XBox games (one of which was a remake of a game that didn't need it, the other of which apparentely sucked) I still stand by that statement.

And I have said nothing against XBox or XBox360, at least not since the console early last generation... So, no, you're not documenting years of anti-Xbox/Xbox360 rhetoric, but anti-Rare rhetoric, which are quite different. This is fortunate since otherwise the Xbox's library would be very very bare.

What do I really think so far? PDZ is good so far, but it's not hammering in the next generation in a striking new fashion. Every little part of PDZ looks good but familiar. Nothing is really stunning, yet I'll be playing it all weekend to get a bigger and broader perspective... It feels decent; not great. It's little slower paced than I had expected, not as frenetic as other first-person shooters; and in some ways the game reels me in, while in others, it's unimpressive...It's looking good so far. Is it great? Not sure of that yet.

PDZ is not going to be the killer app that Microsoft needed and wanted it to be. The level of quality just hasn't seemed balanced enough to be that, and though it may get a heck of a lot better later, I haven't seen anything to make me confident in that.

It's a shame that this game is getting pushed out at launch when it clearly could have used more time polishing and tuning. Then again, Rare's had years to make this game, and I'm not sure extra time wouldn't have just dragged out the inevitable. Perfect Dark Zero is what it is -- something of a throwback, something of a vanguard. It's not a must-buy yet from what I've seen (and true enough, we've had a lot of laugh at spots that weren't supposed to be funny ... there's plenty that haters will hold over it to keep fans wincing for years) but if you sit down and play it, PDZ looks to be a game that can deliver decently over the long run.

Huh? I'm still here.

I can tell you one thing, a review is a review and opinions are opinions. I played PDZ at my local Gamestop Xbox360 kiosk and it wasn't looking next-gen to me. What I saw was an exact representation of Ken Kutaragi's statement.... Xbox 1.5

I take a look at the other games for Xbox 360 and those just look amazingly sick in terms of visual and smooth gameplay. I didn't enjoy PDZ at all...

You can take what you will from that Gamespot review, I stand by my opinion. There are sicker games out there for the 360, PDZ isn't one of them.

Jonbo298
11-23-2005, 11:58 AM
I said that comment because it resembled nothing of the original. Granted, its a prequel and N64 is different from the 360 but hopefully you get the point.

Plus, those comments were made MONTHS ago before we even saw the final product. Hell, if Rare had PDZ playable at E3, I may have said different.

So stop thinking past comments are still 100% current. Things do change Bond

Considering that Perfect Dark: Zero was in development for 10 years and that it was touted by many as THE killer app for the Xbox 360, I'd say that a ranking of 87% on GameRankings.com is kind of a disappointment. What's really interesting is GameSpot's review is actually the second highest rating there (some site called Talk Xbox gave the game 97%). GameSpot is normally on the low end, but I guess in this case they just really liked it. It should also be noted that as of this post, IGN Xbox hasn't had their say yet.

Also, some might say Kameo is getting good reviews. But that kind of depends on what your definition of good reviews is. How does 77% do for you? (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/516505.asp)

I stand by my original statements. It appears so far that while Rare doesn't produce absolute crap, Perfect Dark: Zero is no Goldeneye (or even Perfect Dark) and Kameo is no Banjo Kazooie.

And let's also keep in mind that Star Fox Adventures initially had really high reviews. But you'll have a hard time now finding many people who still think it's great.

Dyne

Though there's so much to do in Perfect Dark's single player campaign, it gets tedious after a while.

While Perfect Dark Zero ushers in a fantastic set of online options and scenarios -- and we expect this to be THE online game for Xbox 360 for quite a while -- the single-player game is surprisinly lacking in originality and innovation. Five years of waiting for this? Hm... PDZ's single-player campaign adds nothing to the genre, but more specifically, the improvements made over the original are minimal and disappointing. I strongly recommend skipping playing it by yourself and instead punching through it with a friend in coop, which, smartly, is included. This game, however, shines online and will make you happy you bought it.

Presentation 5.0

It's impossible not to notice how badly the story is executed here. Cut-scenes fail to make much sense of what's going on. Menu system helps to sort out the bevy of multiplayer options.

So, where are all the naysayers now? I'd assume they're going to mysteriously disappear like they always do.

I'm right here. You see the above comments? Without Xbox Live, this game is a pile of **** around 5 years in the making. Read 'em and weep.

Looks like the only one who's disappeared is you.

So IGN > Gamespot now? Hmmm, that seems to go against sooooo much of what most hardcore gamers believe. All of a sudden new sources of information have new levels of validity because they parrot what you were already thinking.

Welcome to politics of the self-fulfilling prophecy.

And Xantar, my observation of Kameo was referring to Gamespot's and IGN's reviews, both of which were well into the 8's. And actually I would place a game at 7.7 into the "good" range in general. Not all games can be life changing experiences. Sometimes good can be good enough.

And Gamemaster, for the record you are a RAVING Nintrendo fanboy, so your opinion means little here.

Why can people who play games not notice things are subjective?

Just because a game gets a ****ty score doesn't mean there wont be people who think its a good game.

Just because a game gets a good score doesn't mean there wont be people who think its a flaming pile of crap.

The online play is semantics, and requires no arguing whatsoever. Yes, every game would get a different score without online play, but we'll never know that score, will we? So what do we gain in guessing?

Arguing over personal opinion on who likes what games is like arguing over the flavour of purple.

Seriously, all of you need to give it up. Games are games. They're subjective. Most of you say you know that, yet you go on carrying these types of arguments and descussions that get you nowhere.

I think reviews are pure crap as it is. I dont want someone else telling me how much I'll like a game. If a game interests me, I'll tell myself how much I like the game.

And by the way, who cares how long it was in development for? Seriously. So what. The point is its done. You can buy it, you can play it. Let it go. By saying its bad because it ws in development for so long is a weak argument and is just grabbing straws.

Just stop, Sean. Every single line of your post pisses me off. And this comment isn't directed at anyone inparticular.

Look what you've done, Professor S. Are you happy?

edit: Well let's just fan this fire more.

The online play is semantics, and requires no arguing whatsoever. Yes, every game would get a different score without online play, but we'll never know that score, will we? So what do we gain in guessing?

Well you missed my point completely. I proposed Halo 2 only received such high scores mostly BECAUSE of online play. Everybody agrees that the story just sucked because it was rushed and included an extremely dumb cliffhanger. Also, the "pop-in" graphics didn't help, nor did the arbiter levels, which a lot of people also complained about. Having all of these faults in mind, was the gameplay really that great without online gameplay?

If Gamespot likes PD0 so much, is the liking of the online gameplay to the same degree? Such is the point of stripping off the online play out of the final score, to find out what the gameplay would score. I agree, you can't strip a game apart like that, but it's a useful tool to determine its quality in bits and pieces.

QED.

Typhoid

Well you missed my point completely.

I told you, nothing was directed specifically at anyone. And I meant it. Like I said in the PM (I'm saying this here, so I dont have to say it 5 more times in seperate PM's or posts :p ) if I wanted to aim anything at anyone, I would have specifically done so, like I normally do.

I didnt say that part because you made a post on it, it was a general distaste and confusion I have gathered from a collective of other forums where people argue on for pages about online play.

I'm ****ing ECSTATIC! Look at this thread! We've actually got a 4 page thread going about a LAUNCH GAME for a NEXT GEN CONSOLE that just LAUNCHED. The fact that there weren't more and longer threads is an embarassment to this entire website. This is GAMEtavern, not NINTENDOtavern. I'm a little tired of digging up information about the 360 for no one to care about, and I'm not the only one who was.

So Bond decided to stoke the flames a little and I recognized what he was doing and joined right in. It worked GREAT! Now we have members actually looking up info on Xbox360 games and comparing scores. True, they're looking for bad information to support their pre-ordained beliefs, but like an emotionally abandoned child, I'll take bad attention for the 360 over no attention at all. Hell, we even got Xantar into the mix without directly bringing up Nintendo or politics!

If Rare comes to their senses and makes Banjo Threeie then I will have to get a 360. Probably just a used core system or something. I don't have the time or the money to support three systems again.

I'm going somewhere tomorrow too. I just don't like how you and Strangler lure me into baited threads with the intention of creating a brawl. And just so you know, I received a tip-off a while ago that you two have been targeting me for quite some time with extensive plans that are made in the staff forum. So don't bother denying it.
Gamemaster, you should really remind them of your position as a moderator.

The point with Perfect Dark Zero is that Nintendo fans want it to suck because they feel bad about losing Rare, while Xbox fans want it to be good just to piss of Nintendo fans. Or something about that, you get the point. This isn't just a neutral game.

I hope you're kidding. Gamemaster will be a moderator again when Teddy Kennedy is president and invades Jamaica for the rum.

And you're supposed to be a sentient human being with a modicum of intelligence... but I don't go around shooting my mouth off about that, do I?

As for respect, I doubt you had any for me in the first place since I've spent much of my time here tormenting you, and I think this is probably at least the 5th time you've said you've "lost all respect for me". So I don't think I've lost much of anything.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

See, thats the type of thing I mean.

I didnt even take any shots at you, yet you couldn't resist taking one at me, could you?

And you shouldnt go off shooting your mouth off, is my point. You're a moderator.

And I doubt its only me, that you've lost respect from. You came in here looking to stir things up, being the one thing you always preach against. Which isnt very respectful, in my opinion.

If you want to start a war with cheap shots, I'm all in for that. Considering, I'll come out looking better. I'm not 28. I'm not the moderator. And I didnt start it.

Just know how utterly childish you come off looking in this thread, and the unjustified insults dont really help you out much there.

Typhoid, I've been having a good time on thanksgiving. As have we all. Only you seem to be taking any of this seriously or screaming about me losing "respect". The fact is that every time I show a little color, you can't wait to attack me. You look forward to it because from the beginning I was hard on you. I didn't start this thread. Bond did. Why don't you go after him and the respect he's "lost"? Curious how you decided to pick me out, isn't it? Stop with the childish passive-aggressive act. You should thank me for the tough love, since you've actually improved a thousand times over where you started from.

As for unjustified insults, If you don't think you tried to insult me, you're only kidding yourself.

Keep on desperately trying to attack me and my status. Its extremely transparent.

I'm heading to my girlfriend's now. Have a happy and a healthy.

No, I do it because you're a moderator and should be able to compose yourself. Do you see school teachers screaming at students during a difference of opinions and insulting his intelligence?

Stop with the childish passive-aggressive act. You should thank me for the tough love, since you've actually improved a thousand times over where you started from.

Do you know how arrogant it is to say I've improved solely on you? In fact, I would say it has the least to do with you, and moreso with me moderating a large 500 member forum. And passive-agressive? I told you, in all sheer honesty, nothing I've said here was meant to be an insult, if you take it that way, so be it.

As for unjustified insults, If you don't think you tried to insult me, you're only kidding yourself. Keep on desperately trying to attack me and my status. Its extremely transparent.

I havent. I said you should act like a moderator. You called me stupid. Yet I'm still insulting you somehow. I like the way this one is going.

And I'm not attacking your status. I'm reminding you of it. Because at times it seems as if you forget you moderate this, and should hold yourself higher than other people and not drag yourself into childish arguments, and not fan the flames for a disagreement, especially after you're so against arguments at other times.

And now, I shall utilize the classic Strangler line of arguments of past:

Yes..I was surely begging PD0, the game that would've made me buy a 360 if I could because I enjoyed PD, fail horribly. I wasnt wanting it to fail even though I prefer Nintendo. I was hoping this was the game that turned Rare around because their efforts on the Xbox were less then stellar unfortunatley but then again, maybe they just kinda shrugged off the Xbox and went straight for the 360 (or maybe MS forced them to?)

But in the end, ill have PD0 someday

Yes, GameMaster, Strangler and I specifically target you and plot all night long on how to destroy you in the staff forum. I would never deny such an obvious thing.

Gamemaster, you should really remind them of your position as a moderator.
GameMaster isn't a moderator.

This was really my point for this entire thread. Strangler has made at least ten quality threads on Xbox 360 hardware/game information and they have less posts combined than this one single thread that was based on opinionated attacks.

I think it's been fun and funny at the sametime. At least we're actually talking about videogames again.

Well, this has been amusing reading through. I like how it goes...first a bunch of people shout out their things, then one person finds somebody and then those two start something up. Then one of them gets a long final post that settles it...and then we start all over again.

All of our longer threads here tend to be like that.

God I love it here. :)

Ursinus may be a fine place for beer and football, but Swarthmore has more academic power in its French Department than all of Ursinus put together.

I'm going to have to side with Xantar on the Ursinus/Swarthmore debate...

Ursinus gave a decent student like me a $13,000/year scholarship while I didn't apply to Swarthmore. I did visit, and I doubt that I would have even gotten into Swarthmore, but that's just my guess...

And for the record, I realize that Swarthmore is a more challenging school than Ursinus (Ursinus is still a damn fine institution and no walk in the park, though). As a GameTavern Elder, I declare your behavior as an officer of peace and representative of rules and regulation: unacceptable. I won't stand for my forums to be guided by such unstable and such angry souls. Bond and yourself were assigned to protect and preserve the sacredness of this closley-knit community and the fabric of friendship and brotherhood upon which it rests. Instead, you two have chosen to pollute our pristine waters with manipulation, hatred, and deceit. You talk amongst yourselves, looking for ways to brew threads that will turn these kind folks against each other. Our Kingdom slowly crumbles under your gnarled grip. You both blindly wear your collars with great pride unaware that it is the hands of seniority which hold the leashes and will forever rest above your paltry authority. And it is those hands which will continue to fight and resist your impure ways. We will not rest until righteousness, honor, and balance is restored.

I'm kind of confused to find so many people using rich vocabulary and psychological termonology when insulting/joking/arguing with people. I've noticed a lot in this thread, and this thread alone. It is either the need to look smart or the desire to look superior... In this case, I cannot decide nor can I tell.

I feel like I'm at a poetry reading sometimes...

Please... just use normal words.... not that I cannot understand the bigger ones, but simpler ones do the same job in conveying their meaning. I guess this is just a individualized arguement and has nothing to do with previous comments, LOL.
