Snagged an early copy of Mario Kart DS [Archive]

So Nintendo decided to send a free copy of the game to a number of Gamestop managers. Ours came in today, I promptly bought it off of my boss for $15 (4 or 5 days early, depending on shipping).

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Game freaking rules, I'm overwhelmed. Tons of tracks, multiplayer is great (bot play in balloon vs!), download and play is alright but the downloader can only play Shy Guy. Several of the single player levels (not retro courses) remind me of older Mario games; namely there's one where the sun floats around and spits fire at you and in the back ground you can see the desert theme (Mario Bros. 3). Haven't had a chance to try out the WiFi (yes, the servers ARE up), I've ordered my router based on Nintendo's compatible list and am anxiously awaiting it. I might hit a hot-spot tomorrow and see if there's anybody worth playing.

Gonna go back and play it some more.

So good... So far it's shaping up to be my favorite Mario Kart.

...Well since we have someone on the inside, what does it feel like the most? Super, 64, Super Circuit, or Double Dash?

Also, is the touch screen any good?

Wow, it's really hard to say. I'd say the levels, in design, feel mostly like Double Dash (retro courses aside, of course). Racing feels... Kind of like a good blend between 64 and DD. It's really interesting to play it because you'll be in a course and be like "man this is like MK64," and then you'll go around a turn and you're all the sudden going into SNES mode (there are even some Super Circuit elements in there). There are various single player level designs that are nostalgic reminders of Super Mario 1-3 which is an awesome element as well.

The power-slide boosts are a little tricky to master at first, but only require 2 back-forth motions to actually get them working so once you've got them down they're actually more functional than in the other games. I still haven't gotten the pre-race boost down yet. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I just can't get a feel for it. Though I have done it just by happenstance once or twice, so it's definitely implemented.

On top of that the item system is much more definite. The computer legitimately keeps track of which CPU has which items and when they use them (a complaint I had with past versions of the game); you can actually see what everybody is holding by looking at the bottom screen and next to the players icon their current item is shown. This makes ghosting semi-reliable although they've changed Ghost so that it only grabs an item around 50% of the time that there's one available - so there's a sort of compensation.

There's also an interesting Mission Mode I'm getting into which is like little 30 second to a minute long courses with a specific goal outlined. Collect 20 coins in this one, crash into 5 blocks in this one. But they get a lot harder the further you get in, and you're graded on them from: C, B, A, Star, Double Star (apparently they didn't wanna give out D's and F's).

The touch screen doesn't do anything except switch between a full-sized over-head map (including flying shells, item blocks, etc), to a smaller one with everybodys placement listed on the left side. This disappointed me a bit, I was hoping for a rear-view mirror effect but ah well.

Really awesome, really fun.

I hope the mission mode isn't too much like 1080. It was fun sometimes but it started to suck pretty quickly.

I like the sounds of the item inventories.

Maybe the boosting is like double dash as opposed to 64 and Super/Super Circuit? I like the latter boosting more.

The mission mode is really fun in short 15-20 minute sessions but anything longer than that and you'll be ready to gouge your eyes out. Every 8 levels there's a boss battle to make it a bit more enjoyable. First one was King Goomba, second was Eyerok (from Mario 64 - the two giant rock hands with eyes on the palms that you face in the pyramid). I'm on the 3'rd "World" I suppose you'd call it in Mario lingo. Getting a lot harder because of the placements of items make it much more difficult to achieve the same goal.

The boosting system isn't the same as either of them but handling feels similar to Double Dash simply because you've got a polygonal kart unlike the N64, SNES, and GBA versions which all used a set of sprites - the N64 looked kind of 3D because it was prerendered before being put into sprite form but it still handled like a sprite.

As for AIM... I don't know why but I attract girls that like to stalk. Like seriously; everytime I switch AIM nicks a new crowd of them (and a few of the old) suddenly start messaging me. Perhaps I'll try again though, I usually do every few months; I'm probably due for a new screen name.

I haven't unlocked Dry Bones yet. Do you know how, so I can focus on it? I don't think there are any guides yet, so I'll probably just have to wait.

I'm doing a ton of single player stuff right now; I've Unlocked every Nitro Grand Prix cup and am working on the last Retro Grand Prix Cup in the 50cc class (starting slow with this one - I got wtfpwned when I tried to jump to 150cc).

:Edit: Just unlocked Dry Bones. Forgot I quit on the second race of the last part of the Nitro Cup last night so I had to do it again. Once the complete set was finished I was granted access to his character.

:Edit 2: Just unlocked Daisy by finishing the Retro courses.

So Dry Bones is one of the first unlocks? That's kind of lame.

Also, I hope we do get more characters than are mentioned. Remember back when Super Smash Brothers came out? I don't think anyone would've guessed Mr. Game and Watch by the time it came out. Or maybe I wasn't in "the loop" that unlocked everything in a day back then.

Been playing for over a week now and I am already ranked 2nd best in the world. The other game journalists playing can't handle my sh*t, it's like 3...2...1 BAM I'm off like a ****ing cheetah, and all the whiney bitches are left eating dust, wondering why their asses suddenly hurt so much. I'm just crazy like that.

It was strictly Yoshi for me until I unlocked ROB, who is really, really fast. Unfortunately, though, Nintendo's online dealy suffers from one of the main problems that Xbox Live has, and that's idiot players who drop out of races early because they're losing and are afraid of their rank going down. It's even more pathetic right now considering 90% of the people playing online are game journalists. That's why I said most of them are bitches, cause honestly I'm not really a super incredible racer or anything, it's just disappointing to see people act this way.

Well I was looking through Nintendo of Canada things and I realized Nintendo.ca, Futureshop.ca, and Bestbuy.ca all state it at being released on the 16th.

But I'm sure as hell I saw Best Buy's instore date at the 14th in one of the flyers.

In any case, I'm going to call EB the minute it opens and see what's up. And if they don't have it, best buy and future shop are getting a call.

Edit: Yeah, so I called EBGames and they confirmed that Nintendo pushed the release date back to the 16th. I'm so depressed.

I'll actually have to study for my midterm now! Damnit. Curse you Nintendo. Of all the other times you've screwed me over for grades, you go and forget to screw me now. : (

Well I've finished first in every grand prix from 50-150cc (both Nitro and Retro), just finished Mirror 150cc in first place on the Retro cups, and am working towards first place on the Nitro Cups.

The secret characters are alright, particularly Rob. But I'm still favoring Yoshi in the Cucumber Kart quite a bit.

Anyway, who got it today?

I'm all done now; unlocked everything I think (gonna finish up Mission Mode to make sure there's nothing I missed). Rob is definitely my favorite racer now that I've unlocked all of the karts. Once you've unlocked everything you can couple heavy drivers with light carts for all the benefits of being heavy (knocking people around, high overall speed) and none of the downsides (good acceleration, good steering).

Definitely enjoying it a lot more now that everything's unlocked. I can hardly wait to get online and "pwn some n00bs."

Mario Kart games get me angrier than any other game I've ever played. I think it's that those who do you wrong are happy little people/animals riding happy little karts...and then they screw you...happily.

Have you tried another character besides Bowser? He's good for straight tracks (like that one where you almost won and then I got that star :)) but otherwise... Was so set to use Dry Bones but then saw he had the lowest max speed in the game and wasn't so great for anything other than the SNES tracks...maybe once I unlock his other karts I'll like...probably not... :(

And yeah, until you can master drifting/sparking a lot, you should stay away from heavy characters. However, I have mastered donkey kong. You know in Waluigi's Pinball, the enclosed area before the line? I sparkboost at least 5 times. I jumped 3 positions once due to that one area.

It seems to me all karts go the same top speed. To make it fair. It's always been that way. If you're more experienced, you'll pick the heavier karts - the ones who go much faster when boosting. Otherwise, when you hit offroad/hit by an item, you're incredibly slow to start and can't make up the loss.

I HATE THESE RED SHELLS!

I carry a shell, banana, fake box behind me and then red shell zips around to my side and hits me. So I try planting whatever I'm carrying right before it hits me and again it circles around and hits me. Plus when I have the 3 circling shells I still get hit sometimes by a red shell without one of the 3 doing anything. It wasn't like this in any of the other games... *sigh*

I'm scarred from ever playing online again. It's just...it makes no sense.

Have you tried veering close to a wall?

I remember in previous games you could hop and if you got the timing corect sometimes it would miss.

If you're playing dry bones the amount of down time shouldn't be that long.

Also, I unlocked the 7 karts. I'm going to do ROB before I go to bed.

God I can't wait to get online.

God guys I HAVE to play online with you!

Almost everybody who plays me disconnects! I only had two people stick it out all 4 races in a 3 hour duration!

Am I that intimidating? I hate to brag, but people are afraid of me now.

These were people who had generally equal amounts of losses/wins.

Also, what constitutes a win? A race, or four races? Also, does wireless multiplayer with DS players beside you count? I've got a 24/3 record with my brother and it shows up on his friend profile. I can't tell what mine is.

Well, shoot, the starbucks near me doesn't work with my DS. The only hotspot I've gotten working is the one at school in Blenz.

If we were to play online together at this point you would have to be open to about 1-5 PM PST. It changes every day when I'm off, though.

Maybe I have to wait until we get a wireless router.

Just faced my first snaker online. Man that was annoying. He kept picking Figure-8. I actually was forced into attempting to snake to keep up with this guy. He won that track but luckily I'm pretty good at DK Pass and know about the special item box. Then won again on Peach Circuit by power boosting like crazy. Record 11-0.

Do you have to get A's to unlock new tracks? I have all the tracks for 50cc but I have yet to unlock all the 100cc and 150cc tracks. Maybe I need to complete more missions?

The grade doesn't matter. Just have to come in first and get a gold trophy for each cup. So once get gold on the first two cups, another opens. First in that and the last one opens. First in that and you get something nice: new character or more karts.

Mission Mode doesn't unlock anything. But for instance, if you get at least a star in every mission and every single cup on every level, online there will be a star next to your name. Same goes for getting two stars and three stars on everything.

I'm working on the one star right now. Just two more cups in mirror mode I gotta change the A to a star...and I barely touched mission mode so gotta get a star in everyone of those.

I heard about that; I've got 3 stars for every cup in 50cc and half of 100cc.

Also, I played online today against a cheating bastard who had a 282-20 record. I thought, I have to put this fool to shame.

I'm not even lying in this next part.

In Mario Circuit, he drove out into the middle of the track and turned into a ghost. He disappeared off the ****ing map. So I'm doing swell, right, 1st the entire race. This guy must have chickened out.

No. He appeared literally out of nowhere and came in first.

I just thought I'd warn you guys about this glitch.

The other 3 matches were a disgrace. I almost had him on Peach Circuit but on the other courses he was just using cheap ****ing tactics.

His name was Tomek and he had a marijuana leaf as his icon. No stars. Just save yourself a headache if you see him.

Also, nobody answered my question? What constitutes a win? Four races as one victory, or each individual race? I have a hard time believing Tomek won all 282 of those fairly at all.

A win is when a person wins the majority of the four races. Like even though I beat Dan at one course, he won the other three, thus I have a loss against him listed in his friend profile.

This Tomek guy has also been in the top five for a while now. Other people have played him and they showed me this.
