DS Goes Wayport
October 17, 2005 - Nintendo of America on Tuesday will announce a groundbreaking partnership with Wi-Fi provider Wayport to make available free Internet access to DS owners at McDonald's restaurants across the nation. Nintendo and Wayport will offer complimentary Wi-Fi hotspots at McDonald's establishments, enabling DS owners to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which launches November 14 in the states, to play online games with or against each other.
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection marks the company's entry into the online arena. The service is dramatically different from competitors because it is entirely free to consumers who already have wireless Internet access at home, as opposed to Xbox Live, which functions on a subscription model. Nintendo expects to release a variety of DS games this year that will make use of the Wi-Fi Connection, including Mario Kart DS, Tony Hawk's American SK8Land, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Metroid Prime Hunters.
The Wayport deal will make playing DS games online at McDonald's a relative breeze, according to Nintendo. When users want to play an online DS game at a Wayport-equipped McDonald's, they simply launch the title in Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode and they're good to go. There is no further setup required and no fees whatsoever.
Nintendo will release more detailed information about participating McDonald's locations at www.NintendoWiFi.com.

McDonalds will offer free wireless hookups for Nintendo's DS game system so you can sit at McDonalds and play Nintendo.
All you need to know: You're gonna need some bigger pants.
:D
odd thing tho... if its just a wireless interenet connection... Anything can use it then.. people could bring thier PDA's, thier Laptops, PSP's, DS, anything that uses wifi.
maybe they can open up only a certain port that the DS uses, but it wouldnt be hard to find what port that is and use it on any of thoes other devises anyway.

If what Null says is true, I would totally hide in a corner at Macdonalds and look at porno on my laptop.

What Null says IS true. Thousands of gamers already have free internet play either from their PC/Laptop or from their PSP. They just need hotspots, and theres hundreds around where I am, not just in a mcdonalds. DS' can go anywhere and connect to these...
Unless they make DS Wayport only and they encrypt it with a Network key that McDonalds hotspots recognize.
Honestly... DS can connect to any hotspot if it wants. So can the PSP / PC / Laptop with wi-fi connectivity.
This isn't much of a breakthrough as it is a publicity stunt for mcdonalds.

Don't forget the special sauce.
You don't even need a laptop for porn anywhere; just get a PSP and the version 2 update. It's a pervert's wet dream come true. And on a beautiful screen.

Okay, im bringing this thread back up from the gutter. If the DS can connect to any hotspot anywhere, without anything else like Null says, then why is Nintendo giving us this line about how you would need a laptop with the USB connector to play it in a regular hotspot? Is that just a lie or what? It just dosent make sense.
GameMaster

You only need the USB adaptor if you don't already have a wireless network in your home.

Yep, its for people who can't afford to (or are too scared for some reason) to hookup a WiFi getup to be able to use the DS online.

No, I was talking about an interview in which some Nintendo rep states something along the lines of how at a Mcdonalds, the process of going online will be painfully easy, just turn on your DS and yoru online. They then state that the DS can technically go online from any wifi-hotspot anywhere, except that you will need a laptop with the USB dongle to play it anywhere, which kind of contradicts what some of you have been saying around here. Keep in mind, I know if you set it up at your house you'll be fine without the USB dongle, im talking about at like a different wifi hotspot, like a starbucks or something.

That might be because Starbuck's charges a fee for using their hotspot. So you'd have to use your adaptor and laptop to get on. That's my guess anyway. Point in case: Don't support any business that charges fees for people to use their internet.
