Well, I have recently come to a realization. For some background information for you: I never really appreciated the X-Box at all. In fact, I found it to be useless to me. Mainly, this is because the games I like can mostly be found on Nintendo consoles and I am a Nintendo fan. I didn't really like any of the X-Box games.
However, I do believe I have become addicted to Halo. I find myself opting to play it when I am at jeepnut's house. I think I hold a preference for Halo 2 but I do not have enough experience with both games to actually form a definate decision.
The reason I say that I am a wannabe is two-fold. One: I really suck at the game and Two: I doubt that I would ever buy an X-Box or XB360.

I don't understand the world's love for Halo. Yes, it's a decent FPS with a great engine, but it is not the AAA title that it seems to be touted as. Level design (especially in multiplayer) has always been lackluster.

i don't like Halo either...BF2, CS, UT2K4 and some others are, IMO, much better.
I play the Halos with my girlfriend and I assume she likes them. She's a Nintendo-at-heart just like me so we're good with just playing a level or two of Co-op.
It's definitely a pick-up-and-play FPS. And Goldeneye (which we both love to death) is getting old, unfortunately.

Goldeneye will always be the best FPS (in my eyes) because hours an hours of memories have been built upon it.
Halo is also good, because of the pick up and play feel to it, the vehicles, levels, and the "massive" multiplayer feel.
But I still would rank Goldeneye over Halo.
This gives me an idea..

I dont know if I want one yet.
Im getting the soul patch back for sure, because Anthony was crushed at me for getting rid of that, but I dont know for sure yet if I'll do the whole beard thing. :confused:

Well you have a month and a bit to grow a proper moustache for Halloween. Might as well go for the full thing.

I prefer UT2003/Raven Shield over Halo... but it is a fun FPS to play when my friend brings his Xbox.

I hold Halo to be the best FPS I've ever played and yes, I did log quite a few hours on Goldeneye. However, Goldeneye has several limitations in my eyes:
* the control sytem sucked due to the limitations of the N64 controller
* I don't care about the bond franchise
* AI sucked compared to Halo which is to be expected since Halo is much newer
* No online play (which is not true of the first Halo and also attributable to Halo being newer)
* Halo has a superior storyline in my opinion
* Halo has vehicles
* Halo has better variety in level design both in size and type
* Halo has more game variants other than the standard and rather boring "kill everyone mode" also known as slayer
* Halo has system link for the oh-so-awesome Halo lan parties
* You can jump
* Music is better
* Cooperative story mode
Goldeneye does have its merits
* Remote mines
I admit. I loved Goldeneye and I still do like it. In its time, it was the best FPS out there, bar none. I also used to think Counter-strike was the best FPS as well, but times have changed and I've moved on. At this time, I haven't played a FPS that I've enjoyed more than Halo both campaign and multi-player. BF1942 is good, but my computer can't really handle it and it's not as versatile as Halo in level design. You can't play on a couch next to your friends and there is no good single-player mode. The game is really meant to be a online only game. I could say the same of Counter-Strike aside from the fact that my computer can handle CS and CS doesn't have vehicles. Granted, I'm very much looking forward to Battlefield Modern Combat for the PS2 and Xbox. We'll see how that one turns out.
But right now, Halo is as good as it gets in my opinion. One day, a better game will come out and I will probably move on. I'm not going to put get all huffy and claim Halo is the best FPS there ever was or ever will be. Times change and things improve. In my opinion, Halo is a large improvement over Goldeneye.
Sometimes I think people still hold on to Goldeneye not because it is better, but because of the sentimental value it holds for them. Maybe Goldeneye really is superior to Halo in your mind, but I just don't see it.
P.S. Dyne and Typhoid, would you mind staying on topic and keeping your personal conversations on AIM or in PMs?

Best FPS ever would have to go to Counter-Strike for multiplayer. I don't know what I'd go with for Single Player... probably Goldeneye, as its missions were a blast.
I thought we were talking about console FPSes, in which case I'd go with Goldeneye as best of both worlds.

Sure jeepnut, let's advocate the rising inactivity of Gametavern. That's sounds like a great idea.
Feel free to self-moderate when there is more than 10 posts off-topic consecutively in your own topic. Otherwise, the moderators will take care of it where they see fit.
I don't really see jumping as vital in an FPS so I wouldn't mention that.

Because it's the best FPS to be released on a CONSOLE. This means it's extremely easy for a bunch of guys to get together and play against each other without each of them owning a computer and a copy of a game.
Not to mention the Xbox controller is perfect for FPSs.
So no, Halo is not the best FPS ever. It's basically just a good game that has been able to thrive due to it's hardware, most notably the controller. Had the exact same game been released exlusively on the PC, I doubt it would have gotten much recognition.

I would have to agree with that fact. I find playing on the computer much more difficult, and not as fun. ANd I am sure there are quite a few people out there like me.

the reason it woudlnt / doesnt (because it is out on pc) get anywhere nearly as much recognition, isnt because its more difficult (which it isnt, its more natrual, people will have this same problem adapting to the revolutions control system as they do a mouse. they're simular) .. its because on pc its greatly overshawdowed by tons of FPS's that are just way beyond it. the stuff halo did that was so new to console users had been done 5 years before on PC.

my point was: because it is on the PC it is more difficult for ME and probably others like me to play because I find the mouse and keyboard configuration less natural to use than a controller which I am used to using. i find my arm and wrist hurting after playing counterstrike for just a little while and sitting at my computer is very uncomfortable, thus the game becomes more difficult for me.
