Written by a noob to the business, directed by the guy who did Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 Grave, and Romeo Must Die, starring The Rock...

Was there ever hope for this movie?

And another videogame movie seems destined to suck. I wonder when Hollywood will figure out that it's just bad business?

I can't stand how everyone seems to think videogame movies have some evil curse hanging over them...

If you ask me, only 2 videogame movies made so far even had a CHANCE at being good (Resident Evil and Final Fantasy)... Most of the rest were based off crap that doesn't even have any stuff to base them off of in the first place (Mortal Kombat, Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Mario Bros.)...

If the source material is good, and there's a good team behind the project who doesn't completely butcher the original idea, then there's no reason why the movie couldn't end up being good too...

Not that I think Doom will be good, it's based off a game that's basically just brainless action... And so it seems as though it's being turned into a brainless action flick... So hey, at least they got one thing right :p

Well yeah. You see, the problem is EVERY videogame that isn't an RPG is simply about a lone hero running out there and killing lots of things. Sometimes it's a cool character, sometimes it has some cool mechanics, but in the end, it never has anything more than the plot of your basic action movie.

And the other problem is most RPG plots are really cliched, too.

Of course if the source material is good and there's a good team behind the project, the movie will probably end up being good. But the problem is there's almost no good source material in videogames. All of their creativity and innovation lies in how you play them, not in the story.

Welllll I somewhat agree with you... RPGs are obviously the most story-driven genre of games...

However, the original Resident Evil has a fairly fun story and a nice, classic horror setting... George Romero's script (which is available at various places on the intranet) involved the Arklay Mansion incident, Alpha and Bravo team, etc... And I'm betting if they went with that, it would have made a much better movie than the one we got...

The Silent Hill games (for the most part) are by far some of my favorite horror stories I've come across... Books, movies or games...

Metal Gear has a much deeper story than most action games...

and... stuff...

I don't like how everyone is judging the movie from the trailer.... If even judging a movie simply because The Rock is in it.

The trailer didn't look to good, however I saw glimpses of actual movie footage where they show a guy in First Person Shooter camera angle, which I thought was a neat-o camera trick in a movie about a FPS.

I'm not going to single this movie out just yet. As in all of my experiences, I watch a movie before I pass judgement. Thats how critics do it......

Ebert, "Hello folks, well... I saw the trailer today for Titanic.. and I give it two thumbs up.. the movie, plot, and character development are very well played out during the 2 and half minute trailer."

Yeah that part's in the trailer for like... half a second... Some guy blasts a canister of something behind a demon, which then explodes into a firey blue explosion...

I do think that was a pretty nifty idea :>
