View Full Version : G8 gives $50 billion to Africa

That's just what we need, ethiopians on the moon. (as in that's enough to start a space program..)
Africa is like a black hole, we can poor all the money in the world there and it won't make a difference. Bono can't save them all.
Yeah! That cash could fund another war. **** the millions of starving people.
The governments of (most) African countries must change before their continent can progress to the twenty-first century.

They will either use the money to fuel the nobles and the high rollers in Africa, or they will use it to end poverty and to advance in the industrial era.
But it's a decision that was made, and we only hope they use the money wisely.

But they won't. Where are all the democrats at? Shouldn't you be getting on Bush's ass for wasting money that could be better used to help domestic issues? We all know if the money went to Iraq you would bitch. But here the money is wasted elsewhere, and you could care less.

It's not all about money. I'm pretty sure we have plans drawn out for domestic issues. We can't have a squabble over this kinda decision. Things need to be done for diplomacy and foreign policy to work.
I'm not saying in any way this decision is justified, but the decision is made because we need to keep foreign relations.
Right now, I don't think Bush cares about how Africa spends the money. He cares about how we look helping third world countries.

If he cared that much about helping them he would have thought this through a little more.
A system needs to be set up to make sure that money is going where it should be going. Last time we sent them a lot of money, it was used to fund their civil war(s).
This is a step in the right direction and I only hope that the money doesn't go to waste.

fyi: the us only give 0.16% while everyone else is giving .7% of their total nation's income. so Bush wasn't indulging in the nonsense of giving money that would be used just as wonderfully as it has always been used to fuel the hierarchy in Africa while the rest of the population will continue as it is. Like all the global economists have been saying the only thing that can pull Africa out of it's poverty is Africa.

whoa! welcome back? you've been gone quite long.
can't say i remember you though.
and i think it would be best instead of just giving them money, the countries could spend it themselves and get stuff done there...like build a few hospitals or something like that rather than letting africa do whatever it wants with it.

You can't be serious. There are millions being euthanized in Africa right now. Millions more are dying everyday from Hepatitis, AIDS and other diseases that we as westerners haven't had to worry about for 100 years like dysintary (sp?) and cholera. These are hard facts. Africa has been crapped on by the world long enough, and its time we invested more than just money in their well being.
Meanwhile global warming is still an unproven theory that has as many scientists claiming that it is reality as there are that believe that its a natural progression and fluctuation in the earth's temperature. The fact is that we just don't know enough about it and probably won't for a long time. Our base of knowledge on the subject only stems a little over 100 years, and we are trying to prognosticate what is going to happy thousands of years in the future. Its like Dennis Miller said on the Daily Show: "We comparing temperatures to those taken in 1904. We were out crapping in the woods in 1904, but yet we somehow mastered the measurement of the world's temperature?"
Is it an important issue? Yes, but not as important as all the problems Africa is having that are tangible and based in observable fact, and not theory.

Sometimes Jonbo doesn't say smart things....no offense Jonbo, but that was lame to even remotely compare a natural phenomenon to people dying and poverty. What happens when global warming hits? It'll flood, and we'll worry about saving the PEOPLE who will be effected by it.
