The article is above, but basically Ken Kutaragi is expressing that multiple OS's will be able to be run on CELL processor. Windows, Mac OS, Lindows, Linux.... but primarily they are pre-installing Linus OS on the PS3 HDD's.... and they are also producing very large HDD's at that.
Awesome news for PS3 right here.

It's useless, unless they do some kind of a indie dev kit. Cool, yes, for Linux fans. But useful? Not at all.
And I'm sorry, but 120GB is plenty. Don't know what he saves.
good news as this is. The bad news is it looks like sony is going to screw up and make the HDD optional again. *sigh*
i hope they reconsider it, very very bad idea.

I don't believe they will.... They're belief is that whatever they stick on the PS3 as a HDD... the space wouldn't be enough depending on the type of gamer, and look at how you'll have Linux and saving other apps on it. So insteading of pricing the PS3 with a HDD and then people going out to buy a larger HDD later on, they will price the ps3 without it and people will be able to choose the HDD they want, whether it be 20gb to 80gb.... All in all.... the option to choose the size is a neat idea, rather then pricing the ps3 overall higher, because it has an hdd that you'll eventually need to upgrade l8r on....

Bad idea. if left that way, the online would be like it is on PS2, without much downloadable content and things, and if there is some downloadable content, some will have it some wont.
Then developers, knowing PS3 doesnt come with a HD, will be unwilling or unsure about making games that take full support of a HD, because they would only reach half the userbase, so there wont be many games that take full support.
addons fail, and they fail for a good reason. you cant cut half your userbase up, and throw games out there that only half can use. it wont work and it wont happen. (a game or so here and there at most)
i believe they'll rethink this and wise up just like MS did when they were considering not releasing with a HD. i think sony will end up putting in a basic/small HD in with every unit, this gives basic HD support to EVERYONE and lets every game use it. if the PERSON needs more space then he/she can decide to buy a bigger HD.
Releasing without a HD is a stupid stupid move, and one i hope sony see's soon.

Stupid yes, but if the PS3 is as expensive as everyone is guessing, then it's a way to keep costs down.
I think the best thing to do, if the size option is really that important, is give enough space built in (like on Rev, but more space) where you could save all the system settings, system updates, and game patches that are more necessary things without a problem. That way, when Sony wants to release new online features or something, everyone can get it. But then allow people to buy a HD of their choosing.
Though, I think better options would be 10, 20, 40GB, etc. Not 80 or 120. Unnecessary, and expensive.
not having a HD isnt a cost issue. they dont cost that much to add.
and as i said, best option, a small 20gig HD on every one standard, and you could upgrade to whatever size you like for what you want.
and isnt it a standard sized pc HD? so any size thats out there is one you can buy and format it to work on ps3.

I have a 20gig iBook and it barely fits what I need on there. If these HD's have Linux on them, people are going to be a lot more than just saving downloadable game content. They'll have apps that run on Linux like AIM, and messenger software and even Linux web browsers. You can even run countless emulators on it.
Truth of the matter is... the HDD was optional for the PS2 and it was STILL a powerhouse. It might be stupid to not have one like MS, but then to those who have big plans for it... Will eventually see past it.

I remeber back in the day when computers had 64 MB HD's and everybody though you would never be able to fill that up. LOL
I think it would be a minimal cost for Sony to put a 20 GB HD, and it would also be a huge aide if they want to stay competitive with XBox Live.

64mb? lol I can't even fit one episode of my favorite anime on that....
Not to mention Internet Explorer is like... 50megs now?

And to some a 20gig would be plenty, for them they wouldnt need to do anything, for you, you'd buy a bigger one and upgrade it.
fact is, the HD was optional for PS2 and look at all the wonderful games that used it! look at how much all the developers used of its potential. This is what happens when things are addon instead of standard.
PS3 NEEDS to have a HD come standard. or they are going to really be feeling it as online gaming for consoles takes off and they're left far far behind..
