View Full Version : WTF.....?

Not to distract you all from all the wonderful E3 threads.....but......this just happened like two hours ago...

So, in an unexpected move fueled by boredom and the asi-asi rip of Mezmerize that I have (It's mezmerize by the way, everyone is spelling it mesmerize...), I went out and picked up the CD for like 9 bucks. Good deal, except the clerk at circuit city carded me!

He's like, "I need to see a photo ID sir."
I'm like, "Why do you need to see a photo ID?"
(I figure it's something like Best Buy's reward zone card or something)
So he goes, "I need to check your age sir, the CD has a parental advisory label on it."
Me, "You're sh*tting me right? This isn't an Illinois law."
Then he goes, "No sir, 'FBI Law.' He then turns the CD over and points to the FBI anti-piracy sticker."
Dazed and confused I'm like, "uggh....that's the anti-piracy sticker. hahaha, you have to be joking me?"

So yeah....I'm 17 and I gave the guy my ID to avoid a retarded conflict, plus the guy behind me was getting impatient that I kept swearing and I wasn't cooperating, but what the flying f*ck?!?!? Can they do that? First amendment? Last time I checked, there is NO law for Parental Advisory CDs.....I'm gonna look into this, I hope this was just some weirdo working the counter, some misinformed weirdo.

Good times.

Oh, I did mention to the guy working the counter how I didn't feel bad about the thousands of songs I've stolen. Stupid industry.

And, they beefed up the Parental Advisory label too. Now it says, “Parental Advisory: Strong Language, Violence and Harsh Sexual Content” or something along those lines. What is this? System Of A Down: The movie now with animation! Jeez.....

One time, Dylan told me that he tried to rent something at Blockbuster, and they wouldnt let him, because he wasn't 18 or something.

And countless times his brother wasn't allowed to rent things.

Personally, I havent ever been checked. And I think it's stupid, because it isnt a law, its a guideline for parents.

Even if it's a guideline, I'm still confused, because 17 isn't the age of consent. I mean, if that's their awesome logic, you would think that I should have to be 18....not 1 year from not being a minor. I've been buying CDs with parental advisory on them since 3rd or 4th grade, so I'm hoping this was just some horrible mishap.

Some stores enforce it though, so that way they cant get in crap when a parent brings a game or CD back and complains, regardless of the parental advisory label.

But not everyone in the store enforces it, maybe there was a supervisor around, or maybe he was the supervisor. Or something along those lines.

Yes there is an age/permission requirement for Parental Advisory tags. There's also one for R rated movies and M rated games, believe it or not.

Also, the FBI warning had nothing to do with the Parental Advisory, so that clerk had a poor arguement. The fact still remains, however, that the age requirement can be enforced.

Yeah, probably. I have cool parents, thank god. Okay....they aren't really cool, in fact they are the anti of cool. Still, they never have really stopped me from listening to music. Music is something they don't mess with.

Good to hear! Mezmerize is an amazing album. And 9 bucks? Blessed be System of a Down :p

NIN's new album has a suggested retail of a crippling $20 :(

Mezmerize is fantastic! For 9 bucks, you really can't go wrong. It's just as tight as all their older albums, and it has a lot of energy. It's kind of short (36 minutes), but all the better. I found myself humming to a few of the songs today (which prompted me to buy the album), and it doesn't require much patience to digest. This ain't no Delirium Cordia baby! I give it 4 out of 5 amazon stars after listening to it about 7 times.

Well, I'm not fond of short CDs, but I can accept the fact that it's really "half" an album (the other half to be released in six months). So... 60+ minutes with around 18 tracks for 20 bucks? Sounds reasonable to me.

Music or any art form for that matter, should not be censored or withheld from ANYONE. Restricting expression through art is just insane and 1984-ish. Scenarios like this are my justification for encouraging piracy. Steal everything and anything you can get away with. Fight the system.

SOAD used to be my left nut. My username is their bassist's tuning, but still, back on topic, companies can decide not to sell you a CD.

And there should be limits to what you can have. Children should not have access to pornography.

Stores have the right to sell their product to whomever they choose. They can choose not to sell it to people under a certain age, they can choose not to sell it to blacks (though, then they lose federal support, and some other stuff).

There is no federal law that states you can't buy, possess, or hear that CD. But stores can do whatever they want.

I don't think there's a law on the sale of movies either, just in theaters.

Sounds a lot like the marijuana issue up here.

Oops, did I just open that can of worms out loud?

Anyways, I'm going to stamp that subject right now and add two cents. The restriction of the media is definitely annoying but it's understandable. However, I guess it's more bearable now that I'm at an age where I can do anything I want.

When I have children I will want to know what they're listening to. Until I experience that, I don't have much of an opinion on media moderation.

Mezmerize sucks. My brother bought it, and I honestly DID like SOAD's older stuff on Toxicty and Steal This Album, but im sorry this new stuff is pretty bad. The single BYOB is awful, I at first thought they just picked out a bad song for the single, but after listening to the CD I can say that nothing is really any better. The only song worth listening to on the whole CD is Old School Hollywood, and even that isnt all that great. What I dont understand is why is that guitarist singing? He barley sang at all on the older albums, but now it seems hes the lead and that other guy (Serj I think his name is), seems to be more of a backup. Thats a big problem IMO, because Serj is the one with real singing talent. That other guy sounds awful.

OH and Gremlin, Id say your whining about nothing. Your 17 right so what do you care? Throwing a fit about it to the poor circuit city employee is pretty childish. Its not like he/she makes that sort of decision, they dosent like asking you that any more than you like hearing it. But people need to realise that the day is fast approaching when it will be impossible for a minor to buy M rated games, and explicit content CD's, and probably R rated movies too.

I honestly don't care if anyone cards me... My cousin who is 30 yrs was card for cigarettes and she felt good about it... (you know.. the youth look ..)

But I get carded for Cigarettes almost all the time (not by the people I see regularly) but I have no problem with it.... just a matter of taking out my DL....

I mean... I'm of age, I dont really need to be concerned about it...

And the more you complain about them carding you, the more it looks like your not old enough in the first place... you feel me? Makes you look immature..

Yeah, that's a good point. I've had the word f*ck in my vocabulary since 1st grade, and I need to be of a certain age set by a certain standard that goes against my God-given first amendment to listen to music. I can live with that. But, if I weren’t of age, I’d jump through the monitor and kill you.

I got carded for the first time the other day while trying to buy Fight Club. I was at Wal-Mart and there was this elderly woman at the counter, and she looks at the box, looks at me, then goes "you're 17, right"

And I say "Yeah, do you want to see my ID?"
She says, "Yeah, sometimes it's hard to tell.

So I show her my ID and I got Fight Club.
