1. What is your full job description? Merchandising Specialist - (Best Buy)
2. What are your responsibilities at your job? In charge of mostly every product on the floor of my Best Buy through use of Planograms and maps. Also inventory work, and saying hi to every customer, even leading them to sales employees if they require.
3. How do you communicate with other people on the job? We have a rule called the 10:30 rule at work, for our General Manager. You are obligated to say hi to everyone in a 10-foot radius within 30 seconds. This creates a friendly environment for both employees and customers. So basically everyone communicates with everyone else happily.
4. With customers/management/subordinates, would you say your communication is more direction-receiving, feedback, or equal and why? Split down the middle. As a lower cog in the team, I'm used to doing more work than decision making. But they really need feedback from my end to know what needs improvement. Say, my supervisor tells me what Planogram to work on, how to handle problems. Then, I'm supposed to let him know how I did my work and any suggestions for plano.
5. What motivates you to work? I'm naturally motivated by anything. Best Buy is a fantastic company to work for, and my pay is pretty nice.
6. Do you feel communication is significant at your workplace? Why/Why not? Like I said before, the 10:30 rule goes for everyone. If you are caught not saying Hi to anybody, no matter what task you are doing, you have two option: Singing a song on the PA system, or being written up. So yes, everybody talks with everybody. Saying Hi is the opening window to communication.
7. What is something you would change about the way you could communicate with others at your job? We have a list of telephone extensions on us at all times, but we're not allowed cell phones on the floor (without GM approval.) Only a few people have cell phones, and based on the number of times I've seen people looking for others (and myself looking for others as well) cell phones would be a great improvement to the structure of our communication. Even just walkie-talkies would save a lot of time.
8. Do you feel you are an effective communicator? Why/why not? I've taken a course on Teamwork and Communication, so I feel I'm a very effective communicator. I've learned all the ins and outs of teamwork from reading books written by professionals on the subject, so communication between my team and I is usually great. The job always gets done.

Since I don't currently have a job, I'll use my experience from my job last summer. Is that okay?

Robert McCutchan; 17

1. What is your full job description? Frontier City Foods Department. I was what we called a "red tag." I was a grunt, basically.
2. What are your responsibilities at your job? I cooked food (fast food type) and worked the cash register and cleaned.
3. How do you communicate with other people on the job? At the restaraunt I worked with for the first half of the summer, my coworkers and I were pretty jovial while working. We joked around and had fun. During the second half, though, I was moved around to different restaraunts a bit and was a little less friendly, since I didn't really know them as well..
4. With customers/management/subordinates, would you say your communication is more direction-receiving, feedback, or equal and why? With my costumers, it was pretty much direction-receiving. They were customers... Management was a little weird. We had supervisors who were no older than I was. They were pretty much just coworkers with a tad more authority. The "gold tags" (the park managers and such) were more typical bosses.
5. What motivates you to work? Pretty much money. There was hardly any personal satisfaction from asking people if they wanted a souvenier cup.
6. Do you feel communication is significant at your workplace? Why/Why not? Yeah, I guess. I had to talk to the customers to see what they wanted. We also had to talk to the person on the cash register in case there was some special request that we couldn't read from the ticket.
7. What is something you would change about the way you could communicate with others at your job? In some restaraunts, it was hard to tell the cooks to add an extra slice of cheese or something. Sometimes it wasn't clear what people wanted extra cheese or chili on, etc. SOmething to clarify that would have been nice...[i]
8. Do you feel you are an effective communicator? Why/why not? [i]I think I did well enough. There were a couple of times that customers got ticked at me because I couldn't read their mind, but I hardly think that's my fault...

1. What is your full job description? I dont really have one. As I said before, I work at a company that makes a repairs Commercial Waffle Irons. Im currently in the "Department" that makes the brand new ones, so I guess if I had to have a title it would be something like "Waffle Iron Assembler"
2. What are your responsibilities at your job? Normally I get a bunch of different parts assembled, put them all into buckets, and take them out to the technicians who assemble them the rest of the way.
3. How do you communicate with other people on the job?
I just talk to them...if I have a question I find either my manager or my boss and straight up ask him.
4. With customers/management/subordinates, would you say your communication is more direction-receiving, feedback, or equal and why? Id say about equal. I still do get a lot of direction from people, but ive been working there long enough to the point where I know how to do just about everything, so if someone is having a problem with someone im often the first one asked about it. Also, I know more about what I do than my bosses do, so a lot of times they're asking me questions on how to improve this or that, and what would make things better.
5. What motivates you to work? Not a whole lot anymore to be honest...especially since my old supervisior retired, that guy was awsome, he would buy the whole high school/college aged kids pizza what seemed like almost once a month. That and he was just an awsome guy to work for. But now that he's retired our new Supervisior isnt nearly as cool, so thats not a motivational factor anymore. Ive allready been employee of the month, not that I really gave a **** about that anyways. So for right now, the only thing that REALLY motivates me is the money. And it isnt very good money so I wouldnt even call that a real motivator.
6. Do you feel communication is significant at your workplace? Why/Why not? Yes, definatley. Little problems are always coming up that we must get sorted out. Such things as "The battery on this drill is dead", "We ran out of this screw", "This peice all of a sudden isnt fitting right", "Sorry Boss, I dont have time to get 16 buckets out in one day."

Stuff like that.

7. What is something you would change about the way you could communicate with others at your job? I would change the fact that a lot of the time I'll have a problem that nobody else will really know much about, because im the only one that does spicifically what I do there. So I'll be wondering, "Is this the way im suppoused to do this?", but there's really nobody there to ask during the after school hours I work, so I just have to usually do it however I think is right, and sometimes the next day I find that I did something wrong...
8. Do you feel you are an effective communicator? Why/why not?
Yes, absolutley. If see something that I think could be improved, or a new tool that might help me with this or that, I tell someone about it. And I always try to help the people who are lower than I am in "Rank", because I know what its like.

1. What is your full job description?
Promotional Consultant

2. What are your responsibilities at your job?
I Promote cosmetics/fragrances/chocolates/wine during promotional periods for different companies. I am given training before hand for every different job and my responsibilites are often different. In a nutshell, i assist companies to push sales during peak buying periods (ex> mothers day/valentines day) or introduce a new product into the market.

3. How do you communicate with other people on the job?
I have to speak to consumers and approach people at shopping centres/events and introduce products to them. I proovide customers with information on items.

4. With customers/management/subordinates, would you say your communication is more direction-receiving, feedback, or equal and why?
equal. As the range of products I am responsible for promoting is often big, feedback is neccesary from the customers. We are encouraged to be extroverted and friendly with customers apart from being attentive.

5. What motivates you to work?
the pay and competition with other promotional staff from other companies during peak periods. Its scary to the customer when a whole bunch attacks them...but its fun ;) ...i love the competition (im one of those evil bubbly salesgirls u get at the mall...smiling like mad, trying to get you to try stuff)

6. Do you feel communication is significant at your workplace? Why/Why not?
yes. Communication is the basis of my job.

7. What is something you would change about the way you could communicate with others at your job?
nothing actually. but it would be nice if customers were sometimes less rude while turning down offers.

8. Do you feel you are an effective communicator?
yes.

Name: Brandly Osorto
Age: 19
Company: Galacy Inc.

1. What is your full job description?
Basic Design/Data Entry

2. What are your responsibilities at your job?
To get all the websites up and running for customers to review (Basic Design)
To enter all information based on the telemarketing sales, into a program called TeleMagic (Data Entry)

3. How do you communicate with other people on the job?
I have to walk around the office.

4. With customers/management/subordinates, would you say your communication is more direction-receiving, feedback, or equal and why?
Equal, while I get some direction on what I do, I already know what to do and how to do it, and they let me do my thing. Also, I get complimented on how fast I do my job (Basic only, not Data).

5. What motivates you to work?
To be honest, money, makes things much easier, but with that it all goes away, really fast..., that and I'd rather earn money, than to do nothing (but sometimes I just want to stop and play some videogames ;))

6. Do you feel communication is significant at your workplace? Why/Why not?
Yes, I do feel that communication is very important, especially since I know just about everyone in the whole company. And I do need to know more about the people in the Sales Dept. than anyone else, because thats where the sales, and the "free trials" are being created.

7. What is something you would change about the way you could communicate with others at your job?
I wouldn't, It's just what I needed.

8. Do you feel you are an effective communicator? Why/why not?
I do, but I'm more of the "funny guy at the office" type. Since I talk to just about everyone, I feel like I'm the comic relief, of that workplace
