View Full Version : Sony's Conference
DarkMaster

Details so far:
The first details about the PS3 have come out. Sony announced the system will be backwards compatible with the PS2 and PSOne, squelching the rumors that reported the contrary. The system will also (not surprisingly) use Sony's proprietary disc format called Blu-Ray.
NVidia is working with Sony on the "RSX Reality Synthesizer" for the PS3. It will be able to produce "movie quality" graphics at 60 FPS.
I'll edit it with more info as it becomes available. Feel free to add.

The Ps3 specs according to GameSpot
Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six usb 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, Compact flash slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port
The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."
Is this conference going on right now - if so is there a direct feed anywhere?
it shoulda started at 6. no feeds from what i can find thus far.
So Bluray confirmed? This guarantees that it's a 2006 alongside Revolution, right.

Sony loves the Spider-man font.
Wow, I don't know how to react to that.
First thoughts are: lose the curve and spiderman font.
lol. thats what i was thinkin. (spiderman font)
and wheres the ports hiding? flip lid on the front somewhere?
also, curve is fine, that actually gives it charcter, interesting tho how MS has the inward curve and Sony has an outward. I wonder if they'll fit into each other. lol
font will probably be changed tho i'd assume.

Is that the power cable port on the bottom? It's a lot smaller than I previously thought then.

Yeah, the font needs to go. Other than that, I think it's the 2nd best design Sony's ever had on a first attempt (this isn't as sexy as PSP).

I think the design is nice... I dunno, even though it's E3 I wasn't really anticipating how the consoles would look...
It looks a lot like a curvey PS2... Same general rectangle shape, disc drive on the right...
But yeah, the font could be better...
Surprises are fun! Now for revolution...

When I first saw it I declared it as fake...why would Sony possible use the Spider-man font...oh how wrong I was.
i thought it looked a lot like a sleeked up ps2 also. which isnt bad. it looks like they got a nice size to it.
i kinda think they put that font in there as a place holder, not really sure what type of logo to use. i have a feeling they'll end up with it being a little more of the blue PS2 style ontop of the ps2. (just not in blue)

controller worries me a bit. i wasnt ready for the PS2 controller to change yet.
but then again i never liked the look of the GC controller and altho its button layout sucked, it ended up being comfortable, So hopfully that controller takes comfort over design.

Yeah, I'm hoping that they shorten the prongs down. I also wonder how the shoulder buttons work, as they look awkward.
Finally, I'm hoping they put the analog pad in a better spot. Nintendo and Microsoft have it right... Analog in the prime position, not D-pad.
I notice that there is no memory card slots in the system, or at least none I can see. How is it supposed to be backwards compatible then?
Other then that I'm getting so excited.

I'm not a big fan of having the on/off button on the back, but everything else looks nice.

I just want to make it very clear and transparent that PS3 has totally own3d XBOX 360. The screens and demos I saw in the Sony Press Conference were absolutely vivid and outstanding.
You know... The guy who was demonstrating Fight Night was holding a wireless controller that resembled a PS2 controller with regular prongs. At the end of the 1:50:17 when they showed the PS3 console, they didn't show the controller, so you know that design is either a filler or a concept.
Seeing Xbox 360: ]]]]]]]]
Seeing PS3's Power: ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]
No one can honestly disagree with me when I say the the graphical push the PS3 offers (a lot of the demos and footage were in-game play being played on the PS3 behind the box on the podium) CLEARLY AND WITHOUT A DOUBT is A LOT more powerful then the Xbox 360.

I think most of the graphics has to do with programming. It's not really the looks, but more what happens on screen. I think......
So it appears the real REVOLUTION of next gen is indeed SONY's controller.
As someone in another forum said, When you get mad in a game and throw it, it will come back to you. :)
all joking aside, its ALMOST starting to grow on me now, kinda like the Gamecube controller did.

Yeah, I thought it was garbage when I first saw it. But I stopped looking at it at face value and started to imagine myself holding it.
It seems it would be very comfortable with long prongs..... Everything is a nice size they just elongated the prongs...
Does anyone see similarities...?

The long prongs have proven to work well with holding the controller with stability.... Whose complaining now...
well if it does one thing it'll stop people from saying they cant get to the left joystick with thier thumb. longer handle means you could grip it a bit lower which would effectivly move the left joy stick higher up.
As with any controller tho, looks aside, you never know untill you actually hold one.

Listen... the long prongs on the N64 proved to be beneficial for holding the controller with comfort and stability.
Now with the longer prongs it just enables that same aspect. The buttons, analog, shoulders, and D-pad are all in SIMILAR positions to the old PS2 controller.... just longer prongs to provide more grip then slip..
Remember also, their may be a REASON aside from Grip for the long prongs... perhaps a pressure sensitive grip for racing games... Squeeze on the right prong for an action and squeeze on left for another action... Maybe something for Fight Night PS3?
ARG!!! this is driving me nuts, i been looking for a while now, Will someone PLEASE find me a picture of the PS3 with its front panel (that slope down on the left of the cd tray) open and showing all the ports and plugs inside.
i saw the picture last night, it has a couple memory stick slots, and some other plugs, but now for the life of me i cant find where i saw that picture at....

My long biased rants will come next week, when I get the net hooked up in my room.
But let me just say, every time I've complained about Sony's controller design, I take it back. Aside from the fact that it's incredibly dated, at least it was confortable. This is well... humorous at best. Sony should've just added USB support for PC controllers and not included one :D
The console is umm... nice... but... ugly. Glad to see someone using Bluetooth (1.1 or 2?), and it's nice to see 1080p and HDMI output. Bravo. If only they could make a game that I cared about, and could sell this thing for a reasonable price. Sure it's going to sell for under $500. $499.99+tax!
Still haven't seen a picture of a game, just heard some announced titles that put me to sleep. They'll sell, but they're just not for me. But please tell me that they gave real-time in-game shots, and not the stupid BS renders that they wowed us with to prove how superior it was to DC.
3 consoles shown, none have "wowed" me.

Rockstar western (Red Dead Revolver 2?)

Mobile Suit Gundam

EyeDentify
Warhawk

but it's not set to release for another 10-11 months, so you cant expect a very large game list. how large was the XBox 360's game list 5-6 months ago?

I hope you've seen the game play footage being run on unfinished PS3 hardware.... those graphics will wow you.... even if the game isn't your type.
Bluetooth 2.0 EDR (Sony and Ericsson invented Bluetooth... what do you expect?)
Now about the price... let's check out some marketing patterns
Newspapers speculate an up to $700 price tag for the Playstation 2.
Sony launches PS2 in Japan for $379.00
Sony launches PS2 in US for $299.00
Newspapers speculate a $465 price tag for the Playstation 3.
Sony will probably launch in it Japan for $399
And end up launching in the U.S. at $350.00
Sony will keep their price at a competitive price point to keep people interested instead of making them go to Xbox 360.
Everyone knows PS3 looks way more powerful, so $350 would be a justified price point, for the extra horsepower in it....
But if it matches the X1.5 at $299.... EVEN BETTER... I'm not stopping them from doing it....

If you're talking about Killzone then I hate to be the one to spoil your fun.............
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/614/614924p1.html
I think it's not realtime, it just looks too ............. polished to be real time. I mean the way everything happens, it just doesn't seem believeable. However I could be wrong.
We're inclined to mistrust Killzone 2's gameplay legitimacy even further because of the way the video plays out. No shooter in existence features characters that do exactly the right thing at exactly the right time all the time. It seems as if the entire Killzone 2 showing was like a wish that did not waver, not even once. Then there's the way the control seems suspiciously fast to be done on analog sticks. The circumstantial evidence is just too much to ignore, you know?
All that being said, I cannot in good faith tout Killzone 2 as the best looking game ever because I really don't think it's a real game yet. But it sure is one hell of a CG sequence that, if in anyway happens to be representative of the final product, shows us what next-generation shooting should be like.

Bluetooth 2.0 EDR (Sony and Ericsson invented Bluetooth... what do you expect?)
Who's complaining? Bluetooth is one of the greatest technologies out there. 2.0 is even better, saves on battery life since it transfers more information per second, therefore its not transmitting as often.
But also on the price point, Blu-Ray is expensive, and the price isn't going to go down since its now pretty much became a proprietary format. Where Microsoft and Nintendo are banking on cheap lasers and cheap discs. Allows for a cheaper console, as well as lower game production costs, which is crucial for those smaller developers Sony has been known for having. But it has its benefits.
I just don't see Sony selling this at a reasonable pricepoint, and after seeing PSP go for $250 in America, I'm not feeling confident that they will get it lower than $399.

You actually changed your username to the name of a corporation? Wow, that's extreme... maybe I was wrong about this whole supporting capitalism thing.

That truly scares me...changing your name to Sony...not even PlayStation but Sony. When I get enough dlbns gonna change my name to General Motors...no...Coca-Cola...no...Square-Enix...no...Anheuser-Busch... which billion-dollar company should I sell my soul to?

Changing my name to Sony is a joke that obviously none of your feeble minds can comprehend. I am only understood by those... who can take a joke....
EDIT: I don't know what's funnier... a simple name change or having Reggie dancing like an ass in ur signature..... I dunno.....

I admire your loyalty and dedication to spreading the good name that is Sony.
I'd pull a stunt like that too but I've put way too much time into promoting the GM character, there's no turning back.
That's what secret accounts are for...right Danchastu!

Secret accounts? Me? Nah, I wouldn't know anything about secret accounts... :sneaky:
As for Kyuzo. I could see if it was a joke chaning your name to "Nintendo" or "Microsoft" or "Phony" or something you're not diehard about. It wouldn't be a joke if I changed my name to "Nintendo" because I like Nintendo games. Now I changed it to the name of some Final Fantasy character and then acted all dumb and whatnot... Bill Gates isn't gonna wear an Xbox shirt and be like "Hey. Hey guys. Look how funny I am. I'm wearing a shirt with a game console my company makes. Oh I slay myself." If he wore a Mac shirt...that would be something else.

Don't worry, I know about them.
Back to the original subject... I really enjoyed the Sony press conference overall, but I thought the lighting was rather lackluster compared to the Microsoft press conference.

I wish you would stop analyzing so much, and take it at face value.... It's not like I'm parading around my neighborhood with picket signs and banners saying "All Hail Sony."
I mean... you just wrote a whole paragraph... because I claimed changing my name a joke... you realize that?

Yes. My fingers sure did get tired writing that entire paragraph. Ok my ten little soldiers, you guys deserve a break. If Thursdayton taught you anything it's that Nintendo fans over analyze anything and everything. You have been warned...and educated. Get started on that sign.

Going back to the controller. It could look far worse. Like this toilet seat trying to be a controller:
