View Full Version : Silent Hill....The movie!
That's right, a Silent Hill movie.
The movie is based on Konami's popular Horror Survival game "Silent Hill". The strory is written by Roger Avary ("Killing Zoe"), and will be directed by Christophe Gans ("Brotherhood of the Wolf").

Get with the program... They announced this months ago, and as of last weekend or so the details have been flowing in (since that's when they began putting up the set and filming)!
I've been checking multiple messageboards as many times a day as possible!
Of course I'm a huge Silent Hill fanatic, so I'm naturally very excited for this movie.... But I believe it is shaping up to be possibly the best videogame movie so far...
Christophe Gans is directing, Roger Avary (who also co-wrote Pulp Fiction among other things) wrote the script, it's not starring bigshot hollywood action stars or supermodels... And to top it off the music is being done by Akira Yamoaka, who made the amazing soundtracks for the games...
Oh, and the set (or the one they made so far) was amazing...
Christophe is apparently a fan of the games (especially part 2), and they've said they're not turning it into an 'over-stylized action film'...
*excited*
Some guy's pictures from the set (http://photobucket.com/albums/y181/whitepyro/?start=0)
And incase someone's too lazy to find the "Silent Hill Gallery" link on that site Deejzguy posted, Photos!!!! (http://www.horror-movies.ca/gallery27.htm)
Edit: One last note, that storyline that everyone thinks is the official storyline is not actually CONFIRMED to be the one they're going with...
It popped up on the producer's website one day, then was taken down shortly thereafter... So it came from a credible source (the producer himself :p ) but nobody's sure what it is... Could be the final story, could be a decoy, could be an earlier idea or something... Either way it's very vague, although it seems to be borrowing a lot from the first game...

Oh well, it can still become a cult film I guess. :(

Official title: Silent Hill: Centralia
Official Plot:
Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill. Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter's silhouette all over town. It's soon clear the town is not like any place she's ever been. It's inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitants - the ones who are left - are trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness. Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game. To save her daughter, Sharon makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl.....

Official title: Silent Hill: Centralia[/color]
You got that from IMDB, si?
That site's information is compiled largely by user submissions...
It's not called Centralia or "Silent Hill: Centralia"... Centralia is the name of a (mostly abandoned) town in PA where an underground coal mine fire has been burning for about 40 years... (http://www.weirdnj.com/__weirdus_stories/PA_centralia.html)
They were using it as a 'code name' (like how Return of the Jedi was called "Blue Harvest" or something) as an attempt to keep crazy fans away from the set (didn't work)...
When the name Centralia popped up as the name of the movie, all the fans flipped out and were like "OMFGZ WHY WOULD THEY CHANGE THE NAME!! *online petition*"... Fanboys are hilarious...
it was like the worst-kept secret ever in the movie industry...

All video game based movies start out good with unknowns. I mean, you can't possibly imagine your favorite game characters played by well known hollywood celebrities.
It gives off that certain feeling, when watching new faces play out your video game fave.

That doesn't sound confusing enough.
Will this compliment the SH storyline or is it just an interpretation of it?

"Harry Mason is driving on a dark road when a human figure appears in front of them. He swerves to avoid hitting the person and runs off the road. WHen he comes to, his daughter is missing. He sets out to search for his missing daughter, with a help of a police named Cybil. Along the way they come across a few strange characters, and discover the town's dark past"
.... Or some BS like that, my point is it's a vague plotline overview (of what might not even be the official plot) that's worthy of the back of a DVD box...
Silent Hill's storyline really comes to life in the details, of which there are none in that summary...
Anyways, the general plot does sound a lot like the idea of Silent Hill 1, but nobody's sure if it's a sort of "retooling" of that storyline, or where in the already-established timeline it falls (if anywhere)...
A lot of fans jump to conclusions and say "It's just Silent Hill 1 with Harry as a woman!"...
But that's a stupid assumption to make this early on...
My guess is that it's taking that fairly basic plot idea of Silent Hill 1, scooping out most of the innards, and creating a new plot (therefore full of new potential for surprises instead of 'Been there, done that') that still says very faithful to the source material (at least they've been saying that)...
I could rant on all day about how I'm sick of the fanboys and crap nitpicking and bitching and writing off the movie as crap based on a brief, unconfirmed summary, but I think I'll stop there...

Well.. I'll just go ahead and say this movie is projected to be awesome in my opinion... and could be very scary. I don't like how the Resident Evil series has taken a steer towards action-horror... I remember RE1 when I was scared throughout the game... now everything is looking forward to killing zombies and huge monsters. And as such, like the movies... they are more action then scary.
I hope Silent Hill doesn' t take that turn.

I hope Silent Hill doesn' t take that turn.
The director (or the writer, or the producer, I forget exactly, but one of them higher-ups in the production) made jokes about how they realize they can't get away with turning a game like Silent Hill into an over-stylized action movie (obviously a jab at Resident Evil)...
And there was another little quote where they said that they'd classify it as a psychological thriller/horror or something...
So basically, it doesn't appear to be taking the crum-bum Resident Evil route... If it did, it would automatically be crap (at least when compared to actual Silent Hill)... But now it is still on track for nice fun potential... and stuff...

Update from Roger Avary's blog (he's the writer).
2005/06/18
Silent Hill set visit. I'm here in Toronto visiting the set of Silent Hill. The soundstages are filled with the amazing work of Carol Spier -- giant, vaulted, three-story interiors as well as numerous winding corridors that are representations straight out of the game. I can't show you any pictures, because photography is harshly restricted -- but I can tell you with no hesitation that they are simply HUGE. Seeing the nine-foot-tall Red Pyramid wander around alongside the four-foot gray children somehow makes the mood on the set oddly joyful. The funniest part was during lunch, watching the colorless, drab-looking Silent Hill inhabitants (costumed to a apocalyptic perfection by Wendy Partridge) mulling about with their trays of food. Later, editor Sebastien Prangere shows me and my daughter some cut footage -- and it's striking, even though it hasn't yet been treated with the many layers of effects and filters that will give it the Silent Hill feel. The most difficult part for me is that I constantly have the urge to walk up and start giving direction -- but I'm just a writer on this set, and there's only room for one captain of the ship. One thing is for certain as I watch Christophe set up a multi-camera sequence with dueling Technocranes: the shots are pure Gans. His eye is evident in every setup, and in every choice of lens (anamorphic 24mm seems to be a favorite). This is, without question, a Christophe Gans film.
Pyramid Head is in, and DM will be waiting in line on opening night.

Just to go along with the video game movie thing, Vin Diesel is set to be Agent 47 in the upcoming Hitman movie.

You would not believe how many fanboys hate the fact that PH is in it...
Just look at them all whine about it. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/silenthill/586884.html)
Fanboys are so stubborn... it's hilarious...
"IT'S NOT CANON!!!11"
Edit: Oh and if you'd been following SH movie news and discussion, you'd have heard the report that monsters will be fully CGI (which lots of fans didn't want to hear)... however, with a Pyramid Head and little children on set, that's obviously not the case...
Oh and screw Vin Diesel should die :>

Damn, half of those idiots don't even know what the hell they're talking about.
So the Pyramid Head is exclusive to James now? And the call themselves fans? The creators themselves have clearly stated otherwise... What a bunch of cry ass morons.

Edit: and remember, with canon you can.

Y'see Silent Hill 2's monsters and enemies are all reflections of the main character's (James) guilt.
Pyramid Head is one of those monster bosses that constantly follow James and they are used as symbols of James' guilt (he did something bad, but that'd spoil the story :]).
But you see, they can't be exclusive to James' troubled mind becauseee....
There were actually two brothers during the Civil War era who would execute people together. They wore pyramid shaped hoods. There's more history to them, but I don't know it well :P So yeah, Pyramid Head isn't only a creation of James' mind.
btw, i'm tired of fanboys bitching constantly about one thing or another. They should only bitch after they've seen the movie.

What BlueFire said...
Although I'd like to add that the incarnation of PH we see in SH2 DOES reflect various thoughts and such from James' mind...
Pyramid Head's various... Interactions with Maria...
And MONSTER SEX!... James' desire to be punished, and the fact that James is a perverted little man...
But the basic IMAGE and idea behind Pyramid Head is indeed based in the history of the town, not James' mind... So someone else could easily see a Pyramid Head wandering around, it just won't necesarily be violating monsters :>
