My Computer just did something very strange that has me a little worried. I was just browsing the web casually when, all of a sudden, my tower made the sort of "Click" sound that it makes when it goes into sleep mode. But I didnt put it in sleep mode, and instead of just making the sound once, it made it many times, probably close to 10, then locked up the computer. I pushed the reset button, and it said something about a failure on boot up, insert boot disk and press any key. I tried pushing reset again and got the same thing. So then I held down the power button to turn the system off entirely, then turned it back on and it loaded up fine. Scared me though.

Any idea what it might have been, and should I be worried?

Want to know what scares me about my computer?

It puts itself into sleep mode when its not being used.

Yes, itself. Its growing, and learning. It knows how to operate itself, as if to tell me I am now obsolete.

wait, you didn't know you're obsolete allready?....:p

anyway, i think the "click" you're refering to is your hardrive acting up...or shutting down in your case, and then when you restarted it just didn't start back up and therefore was asking you to insert a disk or whatever because it couldn't load anything (including an OS from your HD)...my suggestion is back up anything you might want to keep just in case the HD goes completly dead, and keep using it...if this is the first time this has happened, maybe it's the last...

so back up data you want/need...and don't worry about it until the next time it happens...

also i would suggest checking the wiring, maybe something came loose (specifically the power cable) and the electric connection is bad and that's why it's turning on and off...

good luck.

oh and Typh...i was jk :)

I've experienced many a clicks in my time, and have since opened up the harddrives. It appears the click sound comes from a little needle that comes loose everytime your harddrive is over reving, or going over it's rotations per minute.

It's nothing serious, just turn off the cpu entirely and turn it back on. Best advice is to get a new harddrive, slave your old one and copy all your data.

you do know that you can change that by going into the display properties and changing the options under screen savers tab.
