Music Television and Microsoft® Corp. today announced a global marketing alliance to unveil the next-generation Xbox® video game system on MTV channels in the United States, Asia Pacific, and Europe, all within a 24-hour window, a first for the videogame industry.

The highly anticipated console will be revealed to videogame fanatics, music lovers, and MTV viewers via a high-energy half-hour program titled “MTV Presents: The Next-Generation Xbox Revealed.” The special will be hosted by entertainment icon, seasoned gamer, and Xbox fanatic Elijah Wood, known globally for the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Island Records’ renowned Las Vegas rockers The Killers will deliver electrifying performances throughout the special.

The global broadcast will premiere Thursday, May 12, 2005, at 9:30 P.M. Eastern in North America and on Friday, May 13, 2005, in other regions around the globe (local air times below).

Viewers will get an exclusive look at the Xbox vision for the next generation—one that ensures that the user experience is always connected, always personalized, and always in high definition. The special will feature never-before-seen, action-packed gameplay of future Xbox games; a peek into the future of the Xbox Live™ online gaming service; backstage celebrity interviews; and exclusive insider footage on the making of the next-generation console.

The inside look at the next-generation Xbox will continue at MTV.com, where after the special, viewers will find extended event coverage, including behind-the-scenes video, photos, and other special extras. MTV.com will also provide ongoing in-depth coverage of the next-generation Xbox, highlighting the latest news, product details, and previews of hot next-generation games.

“We recognize and celebrate our viewers’ passion for gaming and are excited to be working with Microsoft to launch such a significant entertainment product,” said John Shea, executive vice president, Integrated Marketing and Sponsorship Development, MTV Networks Music Group. “We’re proud that Microsoft considers MTV the premier global network to launch its new Xbox gaming console and reveal the first look to MTV viewers around the world.”

“Just as MTV revolutionized the way the world experiences music, the next-generation video game console from Xbox will spark a revolution in how consumers experience games and other forms of digital entertainment,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president, Xbox Worldwide Marketing and Publishing, Microsoft. “We are ecstatic about our alliance with MTV and unveiling a video game platform in a way that has never been done.”

It'll be a nice event. However, I can safely say that the next console I will be getting will be the Xbox 3 if what I was told today was true.

wow, you got a long wait if the next console your getting is xbox 3.

But I'd like to know what you been hearing, cuz i've been quite dissapointed with what i've been hearing, optional HD, releasing too early, horrible name...

but one thing really really got my interest was the thing that looked to be a trackball on the controller, which is prolly something else cuz no ones ever mentioned a trackball yet. however that would be a wonderful idea.

Well, I can't tell you what I've heard because I'm not even supposed to know it. All I'll say is that if one of ya'll were thinking of buying the xbox 2 at launch it would be in your best financial interests to save up and get the 3rd one when it comes out. Apparently, Microsoft has both not thought ahead of time and also made sure they would dominate the console market in the upcoming years at the same time.

I'll try to get confirmation on what I've learned tomorrow at work so bear with me for the moment. :)

This is great news! What more could a teenage gamer ask for than to have an awesome console be unveiled on an awesome music channel for teenagers, you ask? Simple, having Eminem unveil it. That would be the best console unveiling in the entire history of video gaming.

This will be sufficient though. :)

While I believe showing it on MTV is totally pointless, and industry leaking..... You have to wonder how desperate Microsoft is to put a dent in the gaming industry to rely on MTV.

And GM, Eminem unveiling the Xbox? Wouldn't that be copying Sony PSP's Busta Rhymes, in that commercial? LOL j/k....

if microsoft goes optional hd, then the early release of xbox 360 may be an initial console package. later when ps3 and rev comes out microsoft might unveil their HD Xbox 360 called Xbox 720.

Is it tomorrow yet?

Isn't Busta Rhymes Dutch?

Will people really be so dumb to rely on MTV?

Do I ask too many questions?

It's kinda win win on Microsoft and MTV's part. Get MTV watchers to see the Xbox 360, and then get MTV's viewer ratings to skyrocket when gamer's tune to MTV to see it as well.

Microsoft gets extra publicity.
MTV gets more ratings.

Honestly, anyone who thinks that Microsoft unveiling the Xbox 360 (ugh, hate that name) on TRL is a bad idea doesn't know the first thing about marketing. Microsoft knows where the money is and their target audience, and thats the same market that TRL destroys when it comes to youth/teen demographics. Plus, its a live show, so it makes more sense to unveil it there than interrupt a pre-taped show.

Where would it be smarter for them to unveil it? Saturday morning cartoons? 60 Minutes? Nightline? Sesame Street? Or GOD FORBID... G4 Tech (and mediocre boobies) TV?????

No... TRL makes the most sense and will gain them the most hype.

When I heard this it sorta made me laugh at how pathetic it sounds (MTV? Elijah Wood?), but I won't deny that it sure will turn a lot of heads... And will most likely be well worth the money Microsoft is paying to do it...

And I'll probably be sitting there watching it unless I completely forget about it, which is likely to happen...

i'd agree that mtv is a good place to unveal it. but never knew it was on TRL, must of missed that when reading on all this heh. I cant say tho thats the best place, young teen girls arent really thier target audience. i mean i guess its a good a place of any on MTV cuz where would you put it? Live TV is the best as you said. I just dont think as much of thier target audience watches that as they'd like or think.

Oh, it might not be on TRL. I think that was a assumption I placed on it as being the most logical.

i guess the way i pictured it was gettings its own half hour special.

the way it looks now is that it's getting a half hour special. Cuz if Elijah Wood is hosting it, then it can't be TRL.....
