Sony have said they will hold their pre-e3 event on a sound stage in Sony Pictures' complex in Culver City, just outside Los Angeles, at 15.00 PST on Monday, May 16th, which is where it is expected that they will show off the next-generation PlayStation for the first time.

Three hours later at 18.00 PST, Microsoft will be starting their own event in downtown Los Angeles, where they are expected to finally take the wraps off the next-generation Xbox, currently known only by its development codename Xenon.

The scheduling is likely to be a problem for media and industry types, who need to attend both events, since the Sony event may well run over time which would make it quite difficult for media types to commute from Culver City back to downtown LA in time for the 6pm Microsoft event.

Many main hardware specifications for both systems are fairly well known. For example, the Sony system will feature a processor dubbed ‘Cell’, created in partnership with IBM, and a next-gen NVIDIA graphics chipset, while Microsoft has opted for standard IBM Power-series processors and an ATI graphics solution.

However, a number of key elements remain to be confirmed, such as the amount of RAM in the systems, the type of media they will use - PS3 will be utilising high capacity Blu-Ray discs, while Xbox may well stick with the current DVD technology - and whether either will feature a hard drive.

Of course, what most consumers will probably want to know is simply what the devices look like, with the external appearance of both systems being kept a closely guarded secret so far.

I'm excited for E3... as if it weren't apparent for many people. The article is right... the fact that what everyone is most hyped about is how the systems will look..... yay for E3....

NEW YORK -- The revolution will be televised. Xbox 2 -- aka Codename Xenon, the next-generation gaming console from Microsoft -- will make its first appearance on a yet-untitled half-hour special that will be broadcast globally across all MTV stations.

The move bucks industry protocol to make major debuts at E3 in Los Angeles-the largest trade show in the gaming industry. "It doesn't make sense to unveil the product behind a closed door, at a trade-only event. We wanted to talk directly to the consumer first," said Peter Moore, corporate vp-worldwide marketing and publishing for Microsoft Xbox.

The MTV special, hosted by actor Elijah Wood on May 12, will feature a performance by rock band the Killers. Athletes and celebs will show off the console's new features. MTV will air teaser spots prior to the event and screening parties will be held in countries in which MTV airs.

Moore said the launch strategy is to not only "feed the core" gamers, but also to "captivate the masses." The unveiling on MTV is a "signal of the strong change in the way we do business." Themes of optimism and community will be stressed in the campaign, said Moore. McCann Erickson, New York, handles.

Ourcolony.net provides further insight. The viral Xbox 2 site, currently counting down the minutes to the MTV event, states: "Colony isn't about alternate reality gaming, it is reality. It's about the reality of your world, your friends, your life. Colony isn't political, it's global."

Launch partners will be global in nature as Xbox tries to combat the perception that it's an American brand, said Moore. The console is expected to launch this holiday season. Microsoft spent $14 million on media in 4Q 2001 to launch Xbox, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

that's when the OUR COLONY.net thing ends too, check it out.

No, the article I posted has PS3's unveiling to be first at the Expo... it doesn't say anything about unveiling on other mediums. So the Xbox 360 may be unveiled earlier tan E3, but as the article stands the PS3's press conference will be held about a half hour before Xbox 360's at E3.

Frankly, it doesn't matter down to the hour which one is unveiled first. Most important media outlets are going to have plenty of people to cover all the major press releases by the big companies.

It sorta makes sense for Microsoft to release info earlier than E3 because it is being released so soon, but that kind of takes away from the thunder they can reveal at E3. I think E3 is more important for revealing lots of important new stuff because more gamers are paying attention. But, Microsoft has their marketing figured out, right?

/me laughs at MTV, even though it will probably get the Xbox 2 a lot of attention.

They need to make a E34G (Electronics Entertainment Expo 4 Gamers) where it is not closed to only Press and Media. Where gamer's can buy tickets and attend the show, and have actual gamer's play the things or get their dose.
