Oh god.
I cant pick 5.
But since everyone will do all old bands, I'll do newer ones.
No order:
The Strokes
The Vines
The White Stripes
The Hives
Nirvana
H.M:
The Marble Index
The Waking eyes
Hot Hot Heat
Franz Ferdinand
The reason I didnt do older bands, is because I have a feeling everyone will, so I just did newer bands, and I just felt like clearing that up again.

I'm getting really disappointed in some people....
Have you all forgotten Freddy Mercury and Queen?
"Here we are.... we're the princes of the universe....
I have no rivals, no man can be my equal...
take me to the future of you all!"
And no, it's not my favorite song cuz it's on Highlander....

Well.....this changes daily for me, but you can pretty much narrow down all major influences to:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Black Sabbath
King Crimson
Led Zeppelin
Zeppelin is soooooooo over rated though. They were seriously influenced by all the jazz bands of the 50s and 60s, and frankly, most of those bands never got the credit they deserved. Still, in the "big scheme" of things, Zeppelin should be on that list. Just like Nirvana will be on a list of top 10 most influential bands some 50 years from now, and no one will mention The Melvins or The Pixies.

Yeah, but everything is infulenced by everything good that came before it, and you don't need to look past the bands that have clearly been influenced by Zep in the last 30 years to see their HUGE impact.
Not overrated, not at all.

Agreed, I suppose. All music is like that, for better or worse. I don't think the word "orginal" has had much bearing in music ever, although at least back in the days Zeppelin was using ideas from bands to make good music. And, they were pioneering music in a sense, so more power to them. It's to bad bands don't do that nowadays...Trapt, Nickleback, Alter Bridge....uggh. Utter unoriginal, uninfluential crap.
My dad pointed out, just the other day, the staying power of bands like Zeppelin and The Beatles. It's amazing that those bands, 30 and 40 years old, still get major airplay. What's even more amazing is that you can still hear Beatles/Zeppelin influences in modern music today. Oasis and The White Stripes are two fine examples.

That is probably the best Canadian musician ever.
And about Zeppelin, that is why I included Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker on my list. Zeppelin's blues songs are based on some older classics, but they still have their own feel to them...
And if you want to rip on Zeppelin, then rip on The Doors, CCR, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and George Thorogood and the Destroyers, too. Because they all have songs based on Blues classics.
