If you're not yet sold, you likely never will be. Attempting to summarize God of War in this little space also feels like it'd be an injustice, so I'll not even bother trying anymore.
Purchase it, rent it, borrow it, whatever it. Just play the game. Just beat the game.
IGN's Ratings for God of War (PS2)
9.5 Presentation
Everything except the painfully obvious text prompts is great. Ditch those the next time around or suffer my wrath.
10 Graphics
Top of its class. The only thing more impressive than God of War's technology is God of War's art.
10 Sound
All of the sound could have been a part of Return of the King and it still would have won Oscars.
9.5 Gameplay
The platforming elements need to take hints from Sands of Time and the puzzles could do with a little more thought and a little less block pushing. Everything else is nearly perfect.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Hey other developers! See all that wacky crap that opens up after you beat GOW? See how it's all candid and fluff free? Yeah, now you suckers do that, too.
9.8 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

This looks really interesting, but a 9.8 from IGN and a 10 from GI are worth **** in my book.
Can someone tell me what type of game this is? Is it a DMC/NJ type of game or is it more of a DW/Streets of Rage type of hack/beat game, or something completley different?

Essentially it's like DMC with more platforming.

Ive heard it described as a mixture of Prince of Persia and Devil May Cry

the game looks interesting to you
it receives a 9.8 (NINE POINT EIGHT) from IGN
and that means absolutely nothing to you?
So if it looked interesting to you and received a 3.2 from IGN, you would be just as interested?
I see the point you're making, but I dont believe it to-the-word.

IGN splooges over anything PS2. :D j/k
No, but that game does look really good. Sounds like something I need to get...if I had a PS2..

No, to the word I put zero stock in IGNs scores. If Gamespot gives a game a 7 or Gamespy a 3.5 (gamespy is out of 5) and IGN gives the same game a 10, I'm not going to think of it as anything better than a 7 (or a 3.5.) The game looks interesting to me because I've read good stuff about it elsewhere. If IGN had given it a 3.8 I'd be looking on gamerankings to see what the other sites have given it. IGNs score will NEVER have any influence on whether or not I purchase a game.
IGN has absolutely shafted so many great games, and they've overrated so many terribly mediocre games. They have zero credibility in judging a game's worth.

I don't put much stock in IGN, but I do like Game Informer. Because GI gave it a 10 I will definetly look into this game, maybe rent it first.

IGN - 9.8
GS - 9.3
GI - 10
1up - 10
Play - 9.5
EGM - 10, 9.5, 10
OPM - 5/5 Stars
Sounds like good stuff

Scores are just there to give us a slim idea of how good it is. You make the judgements and you score it yourself, instead of discrediting a site or a magazine.
And seeing as they are a gaming site that is famous around the world, it's almost incongruous to say they have zero credibility in judging a game's worth. They have as much credibility as GameSpot or GameInformer. You cannot judge credibility of a site based on what games you thought were good, and what IGN thought. Differences of opinion will always exist on this plane, and you cannot discredit someone for having it.

Stoney C. Let a couple bucks and a rental be your judge.
Also, welcome back CrOnO_LiNk! At least, for now.

I watched a video review of this game....dear lord
The game looks, graphically, too good for the PS2
The combat looks like an absolute blast
The boss battles (although there will only be 3 in the game) look EPIC
to sum it up, God of War is an absolute beast. I told myself I wasnt going to buy anything gaming related until summer...but this is tempting me to a point where I might just throw my limited amount of money around.

It's pointless dude, whenever your gaming instincts override responsibility, it's inevitable. I'm going to buy this game on payday this week. Just buy it...
I want this game so much, I can't wait until I can afford it. In about 2 months. :D
