Information about the briefing has emerged privately from senior sources close to Sony at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, with several senior staffers from the firm's overseas offices making the trip to the event next week.

However, further chatter among some developers at the show which pointed towards a rather more public PS3 unveiling in Tokyo later this month has been officially denied.

Next week's briefing is believed to be strictly for internal staff at Sony, with even the company's closest development partners from overseas not on the guest list. Only the top Sony elite appear to have been invited.

What exactly the Sony execs will get to see in Tokyo is hard to say. The final specification for the system is almost certainly complete, and if it is to be shown at E3, we'd expect that the physical design of the hardware has also been completed.

However, whether software demonstrations will be a part of the briefing is another question entirely - but it seems eminently possible, with several well-informed sources at GDC insistent that several of Sony's Japanese partners have had quite advanced PS3 development kits for "a couple of months", with the kits now making their way into selected developers in the west as well.

Despite the resignation of Ken Kutaragi as President of SCE, the Cell chip's research and development has risen in priority. The speculation that the cell's performance has been downgraded for monetary purposes has been denied by the new president of SCE Chubachi. "We have been having problems utilizing the cell chip's power, but in no way are we downgrading it's performance. We are researching and coming close to finalizing the Cell's initialization into the PS3 console"

So the downgrade was just speculation. Still, they did say they are having problems with it...... But I know Sony can find a way around this... Ken Kutragi wasn't exactly the brains of the operation, so I don't see his resignation effecting any research tilts.

Yeah like many news sites said, they are having trouble with their new chip as do many companies who manufactur something new.

My guess is they'll work it out and release a spectacular machine.

It's slated for a 2006 launch, while Revolution is unknown and Xbox 2 is lookin at a Dec. 2005 launch.

This is going to turn into the same thing as the PS2.

Does everyone remember the speculation about how much potential power the PS2 had with its Emotion Engine and linked memory cores, blah blah blah? I have a feeling that this console is going to be the same way. Its going to have plenty of power, but developers aren't going to be able to utilize it all.

Blackmane, of course there is speculation of the power of the PS3. But then again, it was reported that 80% of the developers that received PS3 development kits liked what they saw, and it was fairly easy to develop for the PS3.

For the PS2... no one was too crazy about the development kits they got. Sony made a move this gen to give the third party support, development kits that would adhere to a more easier development process.

Developers at the Game Developers Conference received development kits, from both Microsoft's Xbox Xenon and Playstation3. Of both, the developer's thought the PS3 was more powerful, and the kits were amazingly easy to use.

lol

"Football players in this year's Madden will look exactly like real life. In fact, you won't be able to tell the difference. The gameplay pretty much takes care of itself, too...it's quite unresponsive. In fact, it's better just to ignore the controller altogether and enjoy the breathtaking graphics"

and instead of a game, they just send out tape-recorded NFL football games

"PS3 was more powerful, and the kits were amazingly easy to use"

If this IS the case (hard to take the words as facts at this point), then we can probably expect some big things at E3

It is not appropiate for us to expect anything from E3. Just because E3 has a reputation for showcasing great things, does not give anyone the right to expect big things. When we begin expecting, it is a sign that we are becoming selfish. This is directed at no one but is rather a general announcement.
