Well, can't say it wasn't expected, but I was going to be amused if they decided to have a 28-game season and full playoffs. I would've watched it, but it would have been weird to have a Stanley cup winner who played only 28 games...Anyway, other thoughts on this?

I need to be catched up but was the season cancelled because the players think they aren't making enough or because the NHL doesn't have the money to keep going this year for some reason?
they've had shortened seasons before. But this was rather obvious months ago.
interesting they had on the news a few days ago, talking to Chelios, and he said if the lockout runs into next season, him and many other NHL players are talking about starting up thier own league. said maybe starting with 6 teams are so. I have to admit, it would be interesting to see if they could get it going successfully.

its for the future, going the way things are, owners would continue to run out of money, teams would die out, and it wouldnt be good. So owners are trying to find a way to start a salery cap. Players it seems dont mind taking pay cuts, but they dont want to have a salery cap.
so it goes on unsettled.

It's sad that they made their biggest concessions when it was too late to save the season. The owner's coming off linkage and the players coming off luxury tax was huge... Too bad they had less that 24 hours to work out a deal... 6.5 million dollars away from a season, and now its over.
The only thing that I am mad about is the fact that in the summer, everbody knew that there wasn't going to be a season... But they had to keep our hopes up for so long, only to reaffirm what we allready new in September.
Bastards.

What's so bad about a Salary Cap anyways? What the hell are sports players buying that warrants the need for millions upon millions a year?
well they brought up some interesting points of why they dont want em. i just forgotten what they were :P
The NHLPA went for a salary cap AND the immediate 24 % salary reduction right?
I'm blaming it on bettman. He obviously didn't want the season to begin with. They offered a salary cap and got taken down to a six mill difference. That's ****ing close enough.
Null, is that all you know about the Chelios comment on starting their own league?
oh, and goodbye markus naslund. You played some damn fine hockey.

This sucks.
Isnt this the first eyar ever they havent played a season?
(Besides reasons like the war)
At least, there will be hockey in September. No matter what.
Replacement players, or not.
All I know is that either one of 2 thigns will happen:
1) The Canucks will suck because Naslund might not want to come back, because he wants to raise his kids in Sweden, Burtuzzi would have to serve out his suspension, Cooke, Morrison, Cloutier, and Sopel would all sign with other teams.
or
2) Vancouver wouldnt be allowed a team because of the BC labour laws. (Only with replacement players.)

I really doubt Naslund would take a 2 million dollar contract over a 6 milion dollar contract.

This will be the first season ever to not have a game played.
The stanley cup wasn't won in 1919 or 1918 because of the polio virus. They still played a season though.
and, they don't know if there will be hockey in september...don't jinx it now.
/me knocks on wood.

No, there will be hockey played in September... It just might not be the names that we are used to, though...
When the NFL used replacement players, it took 15% of the players to cross the line for them to get a deal done... I hope NHL and the PA don't have to go that far.
i wish they used replacment players for a short season this year.
i think watching a league of replacement players would kick ass. it woulda been an interesting as hell season/playoff to watch.

I am blessed to live in Colorado and have the Avalanche to watch. It really sucks there is no hockey this year. Would much rather watch hockey than MLB or NBA. College tournament is good though.
I agree more with the owners, but I think hockey needs changes to compete with the other sports. First they need to fire the commisioner and the head of the players association. They need to get rid of ties during regular season and have shoot outs. Aslo would be good to get rid of center line or allow players to pass over two lines, it would speed the game up and cause more scoring.

I wouldnt call that blessed. more like cursed. ;) :D

The Avalanche are indeed an awesome team... I liked them better as the Quebec Nordiques though.
And this pisses me off... I already saw this coming, but I am more pissed off about this whole situation. And not just hockey but all major league sports. These people are being paid millions of dollars to do nothing but play the sport meanwhile there are people who work hard all their lives and make a small fraction of what these guys are making. I'm not saying being a major league sports player is easy, but it is still unfair. And my honest opinion, you could make a team of average Joes and pit them against each other and it'd still be entertaining enough to watch. So whether or not they have replacement players coming in, I don't care, I'd just like to see hockey again this fall.
Don't tell me you are a Detroit Red Wings fan. :D
:D
sadly for you tho, because of the canceled season, you wont get to see my annual NHL Playoff Game here.... :(
this'll be the first year without it. thats just sad.....

What do the NHL and Arthur Miller have in common?
They both stopped entertaining millions of people this year. Oh wait, Arthur Miller never entertained anyone.

Check this out...Maybe it's not officially cancelled afterall... :)
was prolly the NHL's plan to say they'll cancel the season, in hopes that the players would break down and agree to something.

This lockout is probably the biggest controversy in Canadian history.
