View Full Version : Valentine's Day... For or against?

How important is Valentine's Day in your relationship?

Will you go all out of your way to do something special for your partner? Or do you think that it's just another horribly commercialised day that has lost its original meaning?

Would like to hear all of your views :D

For me it's only an opportunity to score some candy from my parents. I guess I could take a warm bath and then have a romantic night with myself.

It gives me an excuse to buy m'lady something. Too bad I'm unemployed. If I have the money, it's a good thing.

A day when romantic creativity isn't taken as awkward. Wahoo!

I'm in no relationship, Yet Valentines day ensures closeness with me and most of my girl friends, therefore, It's hard to be against it.

Plus I'm not bitter about the whole deal, Its a day that makes people happy, so why would you be against it?

Maybe now some people can understand the hate the jews have of Christmas. :p

I appreciate Valentine's day... it has always been fun to give people "cute little things" I used to get gifts from my parents but they haven't done that for me since high school. I don't require something big and elaborate, but I do appreciate it if it does happen. I've never done anything too special for Valentine's day but I'm usually fairly pleased with the outcome.

I love Valentine's Day but I hate how everything goes up in price. I mean it is just so expensive. Crash and I only go out ( I mean the whole 9 yards, flowers, diner, movie, etc.) line maybe 5 times a year because of how expensive things are. I went to get my favorite flowers from safeway the other day and I usually only pay $9.99 for 14 roses and now they are 21.99 for jus 12 and to add on to that all the roses were so ugly and dead. It is crazy.

It's the third Saturday in October.

I've never been in a relationship during Valentine's day, so I don't really know how to deal with it the way it was supposed to be dealt with. I'm still for it though, it seems rather harmless...

I'm not against it. I don't mind if people want an excuse to smooch eachother to death in public. I don't particularily do it.

Aww........It must be hard to be that far apart, but I'm sure you'll be fine in the end :) If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then you must have really fond hearts :)

I will be in Melbourne on Valentine's Day for work for 1 night away from my bf.

I guess I'm not for or against it. It's nice to have a day where we should love each other even more than what we already do and stuff. I'll buy a pressie of some sort.

I thought you were joking till I saw the post from jeepnut's slave...

I used to get gifts from my parents but they haven't done that for me since high school.

You guys get gifts from your parents for Valentines? Sheesh... I must be missing out big time...

Anyway, back to the topic, here are my views. I am not particularly for or against the whole idea of Valentine's Day. When I was single, I am pretty neutral, really, which is kinda surprising because if you knew me you'd think I'm the type who'd throw rubbish at couples walking hand in hand. :D

This year though, I'm planning to celebrate just for the sake of celebrating. It's my first, so it's something worth doing I guess. I'm taking the boyfriend to the football, of all things. Don't think that he'll do anything but here's hoping that he'll at least remember... I'll be happy if he wishes me, heh.

jeepnut was on the phone with his mom last night and she asked him he was getting her something for Valentine's day... that was kind of funny to hear, I've never thought about getting something for my parents, eventhough they used to get me something.

Heh... whenever I buy something for my parents, these are the usual responses that I get:

(i) Don't waste money.
(ii) Don't waste our money (I'm still fully dependent on them)
(iii) Okay, what do YOU want?

So now I just resort to giving them handmade things.

Still, where I grew up, Valentine's Day is pretty much reserved for people who are in a 'romantic' relationship.

I love it, I don't just do a valentines day. I do a valentines week. I buy my girlfriend a little present each day until the day of valentines. Then I get her something big and take her out for anything she wants to do. However since I'm in a "war zone" it's kinda difficult to take her out :(

I love Valentine's day... last year I bought the kind of oil that burns on water and laid rose petals on the front porch leading to my gf's pool. I tried my best to light the oil on fire to draw out the japanese kanji for love, but it flupped up with the water's movements and stuff and it was just a bunch of lines of fire in the pool.... she still thought it was awesome.

This year I have something good planned out. Hopefully it goes over well. If it does, I'll post it in my blog...and if it doesn't go well, you will never hear of it again.

Anywho, I like the way you post. You've got a good typing style... I dunno, you're a good addition. And for being fairly new to the site, you do an excellent job of helping the atmosphere.

Oh yeah, Valentine's Day. Who here likes the Elementary School Valentinte's Day cards? Yay!

We never had those elementary school card thingy... In fact, I didn't know that V-Day existed till I was fairly...erm... old.

There were a couple of years where I made cards for friends but I stopped. Maybe I should bring some candies to my lecture on Monday...heh

The tried and tested methods will always work e.g. flowers. I have never met a girl who doesn't like them (unless she's severly allergic, then she may think that you are trying to kill her and that'll get you nowhere).

Generic gifts like that are always the safest, of course and that's probably what everyone will tell you. That said, it can get boring. Try thinking of something that your girlfriend likes. Giving a slightly different gift can be good, shows that you put a little thought into it.

Maybe something that only make sense to the both of you? Every relationship needs an inside joke :)

Surprises are a great way to go. Even if it is something small like kidnapping her and taking her to dinner, if you make it a surprise it somehow makes it more special. As long as you don't do something that may go against what she likes (for instance, if she is the type of person to cringe at the thought of a sporting event, don't take her to a backetball game)

Do something cute and charming like buy a couple roses and leave them in places where she will find them, like on a doorstep or on a car. You can even leave little notes on their saying things like I love you, or whatnot.

You can even use that for buildup to something that you have planned to do. It doesn't have to be incredible either, like jeepnuts slave said. You just have to get her anxious for it.

Flowers on the car is great! Last year jeepnut surprised me for my birthday by decorating my car while I was in class. When, I came outside he had written on the windows with window paint and left flowers on my windshield. It was great! :D

Once I bought my mom a swan shaped vase and my sister broke it. When I was in second grade I got a red Chicago Bulls sweatshirt!

Now we just exchange candy and cards.

If your willing to spend the quarter, I have an idea for Valentines Day but I am with no one at the moment so, what say you I give this idea to you, Seth.

Preparations:
You will need money, and a sculpturer. Try to either get an ice sculpture of maybe a heart or an angel... something cliche but nice. Ice sculptures give off a great feeling as the mist rising from it creates a cool and same time warm atmosphere.

Surround it with long white candles, preferrably only two. Setup lights so it is illuminating the ice sculpture.

Place? Set it up in your garage... it may sound filthy, but the setup will be neat. Set one white or red rose on the table of the ice sculpture.

It Begins:
Call your girlfriend on valentine's day asking her to come over and you have to show her your mom's or your new car. Make something up to get her over.

Hide behind the ice sculpture... wearing something preferrably clean cut. When you hear the doorbell, you open the garage door, or the entrance to wherever you set this up. She walks in and sees the candle lit ice sculpture, and the one rose on the table.

Rise up... slowly.. don't scare her... and jump up (HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!)... rise up slowly and come around the table, take her hand, and touch her face and say "Be my valentine?"

WELP!!... thats my idea... I hope no one thinks I'm like... an idiot or something LOL

interesting kyuzo...i dont think anyone has ideas like that anymore....one question though...how are u going to get an ice sculpture?...grocerie store? :p lol

well since everyones sharing ideas...ill share an idea i had for my last valentine.....we couldnt physically b together as he was studying miles away....so i filled a large box with 365 herseys kisses....on top of the box i wrote " a kiss a day till out next valentines"....well we didnt exactly get that last part together...haha i think he ate all the choc already.

this year i would want to give my valentine "myself" as a valentines day present...and we could get food....music...lie in bed ....do nothing...cuddle...kiss...*censored*;)...laugh...chat...and cherish the moment of being able to b together...now all i need to do...is rob a bank... :(

*sigh*...i'm not for nor am i against it...it's just there...like thanks giving or easter...i don't celebrate any of them (even though i would LOVE to once in my life) so they don't really interest me that much currently, maybe in the future when i'll have my own family.

but this V day in particualr i hate.

do u need to skin him alive...make dumplings...and use his bones for soup?....

guys...its actually really easy to please a girl whos in love wiht u...just put a lil thought in it...a special kiss....a single flower/weed u pick from the garden...a large thoughtful hug and a whisper i love u...i dont know ...personally...its the thought that counts not the price...the more effort and time...the more +'s...if she wants a diamond bracelet...or a brand new porsche to b happy and touched...i doubt its u that she loves; prolly is that wallet of urs :)
i feel on valentines day you should do/give her something you wouldnt normally do evyerday.....dont give a teddy bear...or a 100 roses... show her the reason you love her...give her a day to remember...i think she ll prolly remember a romantic stroll on the sands more than a movie at a crowded cinema
k...ill stop posting here...talking about it gets me more n more upset

My valentine day went something like this:

I had actually agreed earlier last week to house-sit my bosses' house over the weekend because he was going away. I thought that this would be the perfect time to do something special for my g/f.

So, on friday, we met at my apartment as usual and I gave her a card for valentines. It was nothing special, but later in the day I snuck another, more romantic card into her backpack for her to find at her next class. She liked that a lot, but it didn't stop there. After I got off school, I left a letter on her door inviting her over for dinner at 6. She found the letter after she got off of school later in the afternoon. Of course, she thought I meant at my place, so at 6 she called and I said she could come over.

Now, I wasn't there, because I was at the house preparing everything. I got a couple candles for a candlelit dinner, some drinks :D, pasta, salad, and was getting it all ready. I left a note on my door so when she came over, I gave her directions to find me.

Anyways, It turned out great. The house was nice, and she loved the dinner idea. The night was incredible.

in reference to happydudette's question...

Answer: these things require thinking and planning. I highly doubt if anyone went through with my idea they would look in a grocery store. You have to put effort into this and maybe find a independent sculpturer or something. If you want to make the day special you WILL go out of your way for your significant other.

In any other senses... I only get ideas like this because I'm cool... LOL jk.... Nah I'm a hopeless romantic, as you can tell from past poems I've posted up. Anymore ideas, I will post in this thread.
