Wife wakes from coma after husband's suicide

ROME (Reuters) - An Italian pensioner committed suicide after his wife fell into a coma, but just hours after he killed himself the woman woke up, Italian media have reported.

Recalling the end of "Romeo and Juliet", the 70-year-old man, Ettore, who had sat by his wife's bedside for four months after she slipped into a coma following a heart attack, finally gave up hope and gassed himself in the garage of his family home.

Less than a day later, his wife, Rossana, woke up in her hospital bed in Padua and immediately asked for him.

The northern town of Padua lies just 40 miles from Verona, where star-crossed lover Romeo killed himself believing Juliet to have died. But minutes later Juliet woke up and seeing Romeo dead, stabbed herself.

eh, she's in her seventies... she can wait until she dies to see him again. (unless he went to hell for suicide, then she better get right on gassing herself too)

That's sad. She should've tried waking up sooner though.

 Maybe she woke up before that, didn't want to deal with him. Waited until the nurses started gossiping about what happened, knew it was safe to "wake up". Played it off. Now she gets all the insurance money. There are some sick people in this world.

Thats kind of sad.

How the hell can you laugh at that?

Thats really sad.

He loved her, she was in a coma, he killed himself because she wouldnt come out of the coma, she wakes up from the coma, sees he's committed suicide and stabs herself.

How the f*** is that funny?

She didn't stab herself. Juliet did in Romeo and Juliet, but this woman did not.

While I agree with you that it is sad, I also think the man was foolish in his actions. He waited only four months, and if you've spent the the majority of your life with your wife, what is four months to you? The man was weak and probably had other problems. It's just terrible for the wife who was probably ecstatic to see her husband as soon as she woke up, but because he offed himself, she's probably wondering why she did ever wake up.

Four months without the person you love is utter and sheer hell.

A week without the person you love is hell.

Wow, what a selfish act. Didn't it ever occur to him that she'd wake up one day. Now she's alone...

Ah, it's Shadow Link!!!

Yea, what the guy did was stupid. You don't kill yourself if you miss the person because most people in comas wake up eventually. What, did he want her to want to kill herself when she woke up or something?

"Without?" Wehre did she go? That's right, she's still right there. She may not be mentally there, but it's not as if she's really gone for good. He should've waited.

yeah, 4 months is nothing...hell, me and happydudette haven't seen (personally) each other in 5 months...and we're happy...will be happier when we're with each other physically, but that's still not a reason to be killing yourself.

oh well...what's done is done, and now the wife has all the insurence money :p

I agree with everyone who said he should have waited. Taking your own life is a very selfish thing to do. It's not like she was gone. He could visit her and talk to her and touch her whenever he wanted. I mean, I know she wouldn't respond, but still it is nothing to go and kill yourself over.
