for me:
Mystic River
Lost in Translation
Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers
Collateral
Seabiscuit
Haven't seen Collateral.
Thought Lost In Translation was bad, well, not bad but not worthy of an oscar nomination.
Agree on tTT, thought that was the best LotR movie, agree on Seabiscuit, thought that that should have won the oscar last year if not for...
Mystic River, which is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
On my own, I'll add Road to Perdition, which got screwed out of at least a nomination in 2002 (2001?) and A Beautiful Mind.

Mystic River
Lost in Translation
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Sideways

That was a really great movie. Whenever Tom Hanks is in the movie, and he has a part that he's never done before, he acts so well that you forget that it's Tom Hanks acting. You think it's someone with an entirely different personality.
What? No Big Fish love?
I loved that movie.

Big Fish was good...but I found it a little over the top at times. Good, but not best of _____
I REALLY want to see Million Dollar Baby and Sideways.
both very very good movies, Million Dollar Baby actually had more humor and action then i expected in it. was almost shocked at how much i liked that one.

- Spider-Man 1 + 2
- Lord of the Rings 1 + 2 + 3
- Matrix 1 + 2 + 3
- X-Men 1 + 2
- Shrek 1 + 2
- i, Robot
- Seabiscuit
I really want to see Eternal Sunshine. I like Jim Carrey so I'm just going to buy it. As you can see, most of my recent favorites consist of Super Hero theme movies. What can I say? In the past couple of years, they've just been great with the exception of The Hulk, Daredevil, and Elektra (although I haven't seen these they got poor ratings around here). The other good movies consist of computer animations by Pixar and Dreamworks. Pixar has yet to put out a movie that isn't nothing short of excellent and Dreamworks has been doing great also.

Collateral was amazing. The whole night-life of the city was fantastic. And Tom Cruise.......oh man, he's a good actor when he's a mean son of a bitch that will shoot you in the head if you look at him the wrong way.
I recommend everyone go see that movie.

A few movies I really, really like that aren't oscar worthy/critically acclaimed.
Three Kings
The Saint
Equilibrium (Matrixish but better than The Matrix in almost every way)
The Negotiator
Zelig (Ok, this is really old relative to the rest but... meh)
Thirteen Days
Almost Famous

What makes TTT better than TFotR or TRotK???? IMO it was the worst part of the trilogy.
And what's with Spiderman 2? It was terrible... except for the action. It was Spiderman 1 with another villain.

I loved the Two Towers, however, I liked the book as the best part of the trilogy.
Of the three books, The Two Towers is by far the best read.
You have to take into consideration that the beginning of Jackson's Two Towers was the end of Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring, and that Jackson moved around scenes from the books a little.
Personally, I loved Jackson's Two Towers because it had so much "zen." I mean....you have the badass ents, you have the humans finally showing signs of strength, and you have a really good story. The only sucky part was the abrupt ending focusing on Frodo and Sam. Waiting one year for a sequal really sucks.

So many great movies, lets see... I would definately say the best movie of last year would be a toss up between Old Boy (I cannot believe no one has mentioned it, must've been the limited release, just make sure you catch it before the piss poor holywood remake comes out) and Collateral. Michael Mann is definately one of my favourite directors, you only have to watch Manhunter to see why. Lost in Translation and Mystic River were also great movies.
LOTR's trilogy, Minority Report and X-men 2 were defintely some of the best films in their respective years too.
Kill Bill 1 (2 was thereabouts), Spiderman 1 & 2 also deserve a mention. I'm sure there are other movies I've forgotten that have already been mentioned... but it's late and I'm tired!

Are you joking? Spider-Man 2 was a wonderful story of love, personal conflict, and growth. It was heartfelt and emotional with a small helping of action on the side.

Well I've learned something about action movies: don't see them for the story.
A story is a nice addition, but it's nothing compared to a good story.
Put Donnie Darko on my list. And The Butterfly Effect.
Shadow_Link
01-24-2005, 05:46 AM
Ohhhhh, I can't believe I forgot to put Narc down, that was probably one of the top 3 films of that year. The camera work in that film was fantastic.
And ditto to Donnie Darko, a brilliant film!
I also thought Vanilla sky was unfairly panned. Has anyone seen the original (Open Your Eyes)?

I am glad my credibility is at such a level. +rep
It's a low budget Training Day, with a more gritty and realisitc approach.
Plus, Ray Liotta is in it.

Oh, another film that deserved alot more credit was Gangs Of New York.

The Terminal and Pirates of the Caribbean are on my list as well as many of the other popular ones around here.
However, I also didn't really like Spiderman 2.
Terminal was ok, i enjoyed it because i enjoy tom hanks movies. but as far as 'good' movies go, it was a bit of a let down.
DimHalo
01-24-2005, 11:31 AM
Yeah, add Pirates to my list... I can't believe I forgot that
Except that when i first posted, I thought it was just from this past year
I also thought the Terminal was good. Another on my list would have to be Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter

My top list is going to consist of:
Kill Bill vol. 1 & vol. 2
Hero
50 First Dates (i can be a sucker for a romantic comedy sometimes)
Seven (saw it for the first time on DVD. Must say is now one of my all time fav)
Jacobs Ladder (same thing as Seven)
and my runner up so far for the time being is:
The Manchurian Canadate
Perfect Stu

50 First Dates was actually quite good, I can back you on that. Most "romantic comedies" arent nearly as funny, and TERRIBLY corny. The ending in 50 was perfect.

Hilarious movie.
I loved it, and it ends on the best line any movie has ever ended on, ever.

people are watering down their lists....I worked hard narrowing it down to 5 :p
Pirates of the Carribbean, Kill Bill v1 and 2, Anchorman, and the other LOTR movies and probably 10 others over the past 2 years I would qualify as at least "very good" movies, but they didnt make the cut.
The Germanator

Speaking of movies, the Oscar nominees are out for this year and "The Aviator" leads the way with 11 nominations. I've only seen 1 out of 5 best picture nominees, and it was the only one (Sideways) that I really wanted to see.
i've seen 3 out of the 5. Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, and Sideways. HOPFULLY, Million Dollar Baby wins it, and it should. IMO easily the best movie of the year, followed by Sidways.
Perfect Stu

With Eastwood, Swank AND Freeman all being nominated for their roles in the movie, I think it would be the early favourite to win best picture.
I would really like to see Jamie Foxx win both best leading actor and best supporting actor. He was fantastic in Collateral...one of the best supporting roles I've seen in a long time...and I hear he is just amazing in Ray.
I really need to see Hotel Rwanda, too.

Here's article outlining some nominations for the Razzies.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/24/razzies.ap/index.html
The Razzies is an official ceremony much like the Oscars except it awards the worst for all the same categories instead of the best.

Are you kidding me?
Man..
Me and Ashley have so many good times that spawned off of that movie.
She drew me a liger, and I put it on my wall. It makes me laugh so hard when I need cheering up.
Thats the randomest, stupidest, funniest movie.
