I finally got DSL today. I've had a computer for about 7 years, and I've been using dial up the whole time, connecting at about 26.4 kilobits per second.
Now I'm connected at 100.0 Mbps
It's kind of like Heaven. It really is.

Not to brag, but 256megabits per second here.
:)
It's so awesome when your ping in CS is 9 and everyone else is like 70.

Let the downloading fun begin! ;)

I remember the first time I got cable I was downloading a Queens of the Stone Age video at 350 kbs/sec. I almost died. Now I feel cable is too slow.

i love my Cable internet. Runs faster than anything around here. When i play my games my ping has gone as low as 4 and i'm looking at everyone saying...Booya!

honestly that doesnt make a whole heck of a lot of difference.
and 256Mb/s ? sooo when your downloading a file, it says your downloading at like umm. 33,000 KB / s ?
My knowledge / calculations of bits may be off... But arent you guys talking about KBps?

When I move my cursor over my connection icon, it says:
"100 Mbps"
It used to say:
"26.4 Kbps"
Connection icon?? you have some weird like ameritech DSL or something where they kinda make you sign in to use it?
shouldnt really need an icon, should just be always connected. ANYWHO....
thats odd, cuz from what i remember, and OC-1 line only has something like a 50 Mbps connection. (50,000 Kbps) usually DSL is around 728 kbps which would make it like 0.72 Mbps
whats it say if you goto www.bandwidthplace.com and click on speed test in the upper right?

Ethernet is 100mbs a second. Thats probably windows telling you speed of the Ethernet "cord". The actual speed of your internet connection is much slower then what Ethernet can handle.

pffft. i was just editing my post to add that it might be reading the network.
you suck :p hehe

the speed test there isn't accurate at all becuase it doesn't allow for the full speed of the connection to be active (i was told this by a technical support person at my ISP)...if you wanna see your top speed, download a driver from ATI...ATI allows full speed downloads...i was downloading from them at 600+kb/s (i have a cable connection)

Argggg..........dammit, yeah, lol, my bad.
I meant 2megabits at 256kbps.
That's what happens when I don't read over my post.
If I was clocking at 256megabits per second I could download porn in like 1milisecond. And that would just rock.

it only allows downloads the speeds of which it can upload. so if it can upload to one person on a such and such line at over 500k/sec, then it can sure as hell allow for for full download speeds of a DSL line.
however, it shouldnt be used to give yourself an exact number, it just gives you an idea of what you have and its good at that.
BTW, people at isp's will say things like that just to get themselves off the hook and end a coversation. person calls up and says he's only getting such and such speed. isp tech says its the website, it lies. your ok. person on phone, oh...well ok then.
Nothing can ever give you an exact number really, theres too many variables that get in the way, everything would have to be exactly perfect, exactly the same each time for it to work.
long story short (too late) if he goes there and it tells him he's getting 0.9Mb/s he sure as hell doesnt have a 100Mb connection :p (he sure as hell doesnt anyway, lol. but that was just to show)

You're right, it's not 100Mbps. That site had it up around 200Kbps.
Which, to me, is awesome. I didn't know much of a difference in the first place, I just knew that what I have know is a lot faster than what I had before, and pages load up almost instantly.
I've been using my new found power to download high resolution wall papers and video game trailers.
...
At the same time!
Anybody have anything cool they can recommend me to download? I just want an excuse to use the speed.

Just ran the test and it tells me:

Zatchy-Boy.
Its music time.
(So did you eat the baby or what?)
I used to have a 256 Kbit ADSL. But they gave me the option of having a 512Kbit connection with a 5 GB d/load limit for the same price, which I accepted. According to my calculations, I d/load about 4 GB every month. So it's all good.
i hated it when i had DSL. they gave me 384k down / 256k up and wouldnt let me upgrade it when i shoulda had 728k down for the same price.
so after the year contract was up i switched to comcast. god love em :) 5 Mb/s down and no real set limit of downloading.
of course that was just my crappy earthlink DSL. theres some very good DSL speeds and companies that people have. that just wasnt one of em. lol gotta go with whats best in the area you have.

DSL kind of sucks for me as well. I'm not nearly as fast as I should be. My speed should be at least double, for the package that I'm paying for.
But for some idiotic reason, out where I live, my connection speed is always half what everyone elses should be. I feel like calling and yelling at them, but I don't think it would do any good.
It just pisses me off that I'm paying full price for half speed.
And it's over priced any way. My ISP is a local provider, and the only one in the area. If I were to use another company, I would have to pay long distance charges due to my location, and because they aren't close enough. So my ISP jacks up the price, because they are the only place to get it from.
Damn monopolies.
you a further distance from the 'box' or isp?

What exactly do you mean by "box"?
And Typh, the baby was quite tasty.

dont remember what exactly it is. but your line first goes to some box. i suppose its the big green phone boxes you see somewhere on your block or street where all the lines goto. but anywho. they say the closer you are to thoes the better speeds you get for DSL

I'm with ya Null... Comcast is the way to go. They are the kings when it comes to cable internet and cable TV around this town.

We just a got letter thing from Comcast informing us that all the lines have been replaced with fiber optic lines in our area providing us with a faster internet experience. :)
I'd like to get Comcast digital cable for our TV.
My Mac is hooked directly to the cable in my room and it's fast and great. But the last couple of days, our PC in the neighboring room that's connected wirelessly has been quite slow and that's annoying. I only moved the router a couple feet from it's original position so that must not be the problem. Maybe the metal floor lamp next to the router is causing interference? I keep lagging out on WC3.

Ah, I know what you are talking about. I'm not sure where that box is, because I just got DSL and I don't know where they installed it. I'm probably not extremely close, but my county is too small for me to be extremely far away.
I'm pretty sure it's my distance from my ISP, because my dial up was half as fast as everyone else's too.
Although the reason might be that I still have above ground phone lines, and the constant shaking from the wind causes an unstable connection. The rest of my county has underground lines.

At first I was angry about them buying TechTV, but I can very safely say I love it much much more now. The only show I lost that I liked was Call for Help, and in replace of it I got my new favorite shows, such as Electric Playground, Judgement Day, Pulse, Arena, and my favorite...G4TechTV.com: the show. Laura and Tina are very nice to look at.
I like it because there are more video game shows on besides Xplay.

Are you a sports guy? I don't remember.
If you are, go find a file on some file sharing network called
ESPN Images of our century.
Should be between 50 and 60 megs.
it's awesome.
